The Movies!!An obvious place to advertise movies are when you’re already in the mood to watch a movie.

Cinema Theatres show up to 6 trailers to an audience before the film begins. This generates a larger potential audience due to genre often being different to the film they are about to watch, meaning audience members who would not go out of their way to watch the trailer are still watching and becoming aware of it. However the cinema will still try to show trailers which will interest the audience. They tend to show 25-30 minutes worth of trailer before the filmat large cinema houses. The studio who are releasing the film being shown are automatically given rights to two of these trailer slots, and theater executives select the remaining four slots.

Social NetworksTrailers are always shown on social networking sites and often each film has their own account.

Social networking sites are great ways for films to gain publicity due to the viewers being able to share and also how pubic the sites are. E.g. if someone likes the trailer on Facebook then the trailer will become visible to all of that viewers friends and so on.

Not only do they have separate pages for each film but there are pages for each of the actors as well which usually then advertise the films also.

This is usually the easiest, fastest and cheapest way to gain publicity.

TV

Sometimes you find trailers on certain TV channels. On TV sets such as SKY you most often see trailers on the film channels before or after a certain film is being shown. On Freeview TV trailers are most often shown on the mainstream channels such as BBC, ITV and Channel 4.

The trailers shown on the TV channels are not always for films that are due to be released, sometimes they have already been released in cinemas and they are only showing the trailer due to the release of the DVD or due to it being shown on that channel in the near future.

WebsitesThe official websites are again an obvious place to where the film would be advertised as it is place people have specifically gone to in order to find out about that movie.

I have seen an example of this while researching ‘The Theory of Everything’ – so here is a screengrab I took of it.

I also noticed that on the website, under the trailer, there is a ‘share’ button which would be there to encourage viewers to share the trailer if they liked it. This is again to gain further publicity. (This links to the social networking slide)

DVDs

Movie trailers are often shown on DVD's and Blu-ray Discs, shown before the film. It is also more typical now for viewers to not be able to skip them and the trailers have to run before they can actually watch the DVD.
