Youth News

The youth ministry is so excited to announce that we are growing and are moving into a new space! We have been given the newly renovated Hejtmanek Building to create a space specifically designated for worship! Currently we are unable to move in because of a number of items that are being stored in the room. If you or your ministry are responsible for any of the items in the Hejtmanek Build-ing, please have them moved to a new home as soon as possible, but no later than May 31. After May 31, the youth will be relocating leftover items.

As many of you are aware, the coming months hold some ex-citing events for me on both personal and professional levels. The United Methodist Book of Discipline (our rule book) per-mits clergy to take a three-month sabbatical for rest, renewal, and study every 7 years. I have passed this 7 year mark of service, and in early 2015 was approved by the SPRC to take a sabbatical from May 23, 2016 through August 21, 2016. I am incredibly grateful for this gift of renewal, and assure you that Pastors Jim and Pam are already planning to ensure all will be covered in my absence. The second event actually came after the sabbatical plans, but has worked out beautifully! On June 4, 2016 at 2:00 in the af-ternoon I will marry my fiancé, Travis Gould right here in the Oak Hill UMC sanctuary. The wedding is an open invitation with a potluck reception to follow, and we would be honored by your presence. No gifts are necessary, but if you would be willing to share a dish at the reception after the ceremony, it would be greatly appreciated. For more information, please visit our website at www.travisandkaty.com.

News From Past or Kat y

Due to the overwhelming number of flood events over the past year, the warehouse, which usually has a steady reserve of buckets, had none in early April. Due to the generosity of our membership, Community Ministry had some funds available that were dedi-cated to flood recovery.SO, we put the two dues together so to speak, and decided upon an event that would hopefully allow those who usually are not involved in mission activities to participate by building buckets. A team of amazing shoppers gathered supplies for 100 buckets and we set up in Fellowship Hall for the first event. By the time the second worship service was underway, we had completed building 100 buckets. Families with young kids, older adults, persons with physical limitations, all joined in to walk the tables and package buckets. Some came after the 10 am service and were sad that there were no buckets to build. We had money remaining, so the shoppers went into overdrive again and we repeated the process the second Sunday. On Tuesday of this week, we delivered our mission trailer full of stocked buckets to the warehouse, ready to be shipped to areas of recent flooding or standing ready for deployment to the next flood event.Special thanks to the folks at Lowe’s who went above and beyond to assist by offering us products at half price AND graciously loaded them into our truck for us. Please, if you find yourself shopping at Lowe’s thank them for supporting our mission. Special thanks also to the employees at one of the local dollar stores who worked, sometimes for several hours, with our shoppers who were trying to get the most for our money. At the end of one shopping excursion, our team member profusely thanked the em-ployee at Dollar Tree who responded, “We love helping people help people.”

It is with much sadness that I announce the departure of our wonderful organist Hee jung Min. Matthias, Hee jung, Aurelia, and Sebastian will be returning to Germany as Matthias will hold dual positions in Germany and at UT. We will miss her talents and their precious children but wish them well. May 22 will be Hee jung’s last Sunday with us. We will begin a formal search for her replacement immedi-ately. The position is part time, playing for 2 services. A link to the full job description is: http://www.capitaldistrictumc.org/job-postings. And Jesus sAid… “Feed MY sheep!”We all love the Sunday morning breakfasts and Wednes-day night dinners that have become a vital part of life at Oak Hill UMC, and we are so grateful for the faithful teams that prepare these meals. We are currently seeking to fill some holes and to expand what our campus meal ministry looks like in the hope that more people might be able to get involved. If you or your family are willing to prepare a Wednesday night dinner even just once a year (starting in Fall 2016), it would allow this beautiful time of fellowship to continue! Here’s what we need:1. People to serve on Sunday breakfast and Wednesday night dinner teams either on a rotation or on an “as needed” basis. 2. Individuals or families to head up a Wednesday night dinner once a year or on a regular rotation.

If you’re willing to heed Jesus’ call to “feed my sheep,” please contact David Dunn at [email protected].

Ms. Penny Banks shows up on the 5th Sunday of the month or four times a year to remind people that we have an Endowment Fund. Our Oak Hill UMC Endowment fund has been created to receive gifts, and bequests which then are invested to provide income that can be used to extend our ministries and mission. The Endowment Fund provides perpetual support for the mission and work of our church. It is intended for activ-ities not supported by our normal annual operation budgets or specific capital campaigns. The money placed in the bank will be invested and never spent. Your support of feeding the pig has already banked more than $100,000 which will be there forever and the interest can be used by not only our grandchildren but for centuries to come. The children collect your coins and bills because it really is for them. Make a lasting gift and feed the pig.

Who is Ms. Penny Banks and What is her PurPose?

In the summer of 1995, a committee charged with building an education facility discovered that impervious-cover restric-tions on the church’s original six-acre campus would preclude any new construction. On December 17, 1995, a charge conference authorized the purchase of over 15 acres of land adjacent to church property for $388,000. A three-year capital funds campaign, styled “Miracle on 290 West,” was launched in June, 1996, to pay for the new land and to retire a debt of over $800,000 on the sanctuary, thereby positioning the church to add permanent educational facilities in the near future.
