Other cities by the ocean also had amusement parks. Some of the most popular were in Blackpool, England, and Atlantic City, New Jersey.
It’s a FactA young man named
George Tilyou built a small
Ferris wheel at Coney Island
in 1894. The Ferris wheel
was the most popular
attraction at the park for
many years.
Tilyou’s Ferris wheel was so successful
he decided to add more rides. In 1897, he
bought a ride called the Steeplechase Horses.
Riders raced mechanical horses down a long
metal racetrack. Later, Tilyou added other
mechanical attractions.
A Park by the Ocean
New York City’s Coney Island became one
of the most famous and popular early
amusement parks. This five-mile stretch of
beach was near the crowded streets of the
city. In 1884, Lamarcus Thompson built
a small train ride on Coney Island. The
Switchback Railroad had two tracks that ran
down a 600-foot-long structure. The ride
earned more than $600 a day.1514

Some museums have exhibits
about a lot of different things. Others
focus on just a few. There are museums
that feature old cars or old toys. There are
museums dedicated to quilts, shells, beads,
and teeth. California has a museum
about bananas.
Hawaii has a
museum about
teddy bears. Every
sport has a museum
that focuses on
great players
and achievements.
Many people visit wax museums and
oddity museums. The most famous wax
museum is Madame Tussaud’s in London.
Madame Tussaud’s features wax figures
of famous people. Oddity museums such
as Ripley’s Believe it Or Not also feature
wax figures and objects that focus on the
weirdest parts of life.

Gifts Fit for a King
During the 800s, new kings and emperors
divided up Europe. Many of these rulers
liked having zoos of their own. They often
sent unusual animals as gifts to each other.
Around the year 800, an emperor named
Charlemagne ruled France and Germany. He
asked other rulers to send him animals for
his zoo. Charlemagne got gifts from all over
the world. One of the most unusual animals
was an elephant! Charlemagne had so many
animals, it took three zoos to house them all.
