When I remarked, innocently, to Ralph Cross at the gold and silverawards that I had a little more time on my hands since movingback to Scotland, little did I know that I would end up co-ordinating issue 14 of the newsletter!

It speaks volumes of Ralph’s hard work, dedication andcommitment to Caravan that so many editions of "Where butfor…" have been published, all of which have been of a consistentlyhigh standard. On behalf of the band, the readers and all the fans,

I’d like to record formally our appreciation of Ralph’s contribution to the cause Caravan.

I’m happy also to reveal that Ralph will not be disappearing from the scene. He will beconcentrating most of his efforts on developing his excellent Caravan website which hasalready achieved over 50,000 hits. And he will still retain a keen interest in and provideoccasional contributions to the newsletter. Thanks Ralph.

The past few months have been a busy time for the band: the awards ceremony, festivalappearances, recording and preparing for the forthcoming tour (details follow). It’s alsogreat to see such a renewed interest in the band witnessed by the excellent publicity andre-release sales figures. From the letters I have been receiving I detect a fair number of newyoung fans out there.

The current issue contains an interview with Mark Powell who was responsible for co-ordinating the re-release project. (Mark also tells me that, all going well, the first album andFairfield Hall concert should be released in January 2002.) Also included are contributionsby Simon and Doug on their musical influences (which I would like to follow-up with otherband members in future editions), reviews of the Canterbury festival and a host of letters.

Like Ralph, I’m very grateful for the continuing and invaluable contribution of Codge andJill Barber who put the whole thing together.

Finally a plea: we like to include in the newsletter photographs of the band, photos of oldposters, ticket’s etc. We are desperately short of these, so if you have any sparephotographs etc which you think would be of interest, please send them to me at20 Greenbank Loan, Edinburgh EH10 5SJ. Alternatively, for those of you who are digitallyremastered, Codge would be pleased to receive contributions direct by e-mail [email protected] Thanks in anticipation and happy reading.

Line Up: Pye Hastings, Simon Bentall, Doug Boyle,Geoffrey Richardson, Richard Coughlan,Jim Leverton, Plus Richard Sinclair andJan Schellas (encores)

Set List:Grubby Little Oik/Bobbing Wide,Memory Lain Hugh/Headloss, The DogThe Dog, Travelling Ways, Nightmare,Medley, Nine Feet Underground, Richardencores Golf Girl, If I could do It Again...

After enjoying very good sets from theHampsters and Osibisa. Our old friend ArthurBrown introduced the rather subdued crowd toCaravan. After only one gig this year (at theGerman Festival) the band launched into theearly numbers with amazing tightness. The soundwas not dogged by the same problems that theyexperienced last year and although the light showwas sparse they let the music speak for itself.

The set was very much the same as on last yearsWinter Tour with the exception of For Richardwhich made a welcome return to the set.

The highlights of the main set were the Intro toMemory Lain, Dougs and Geoff ’s solos onNightmare, and the last section of the medley.

Under leaden skies the band came back for theencore and we were treated to two surprises

firstly JanSchellas, thekeyboard playerduring the 70’s(before joiningCamel) andRichard Sinclairsporting glassesand obviouslyloving everyminute of this“reunion”.Golf Girlwas a pleasure withJan adding wonderful touches on the Hammond, the extra long intro gave Richard the chance topractice some unusual noises with his mouth andalso imitate exactly the tuba intro on the originalrecord. This was a great version of the songalthough we didn’t have the usual Spoon Solo.

The band finished things off nicely, just after itstarted raining with “If I Could...” with the twokeyboard players swapping instruments and Jan inparticular displaying some great HonkyTonk Piano.

All in all an excellent set from a popular band Ican’t help feeling how lucky we are to have Dougon board as his talent keeps this band bang up todate... now lads what about this new album!

As many of you will know,Mark Powell hasbeen instrumental in getting the Deccaalbums re-released. As well as co-ordinating the re-releases,Mark wrote thesleevenotes which I am sure you will allagree are excellent. A man of manytalents, Mark also found the time to helporganise the Canterbury festival, puts in alot of work behind the scenes inpromoting and managing the band, andyet also finds the time to work on otherprojects.I am sure that it is no coincidence that Mark is agreat Caravan fan; and I am sure he will agreethat special mention should be made of his wifeVicki who I know provides invaluable assistanceon the various band projects. I caught up withMark and obtained what I think is an interestinginsight into the re-release project and the manhimself.

How did you become involved in the musicbusiness? My involvement began in my early 20’s when Iplayed in a band in the Bristol area.We playedProgressive / Symphonic Rock and got interestfrom several labels / publishers. We were on theverge of signing a publishing deal and had signedwith an agency when two members decided toleave the band two weeks before our first UKtour! The band fell apart and I drifted into radio.I did occasional journalism, which led me intocontact with touring bands. After interviewingone band I was asked to become their press andPR person on their UK tour. Soon after Iperformed with two ex-members of Hawkwind, including a show at the 1992 GlastonburyFestival. We recorded a lot of live material for analbum, which never materialised. With thisbehind me I went to work as a sound engineerin London and managed a London masteringstudio for six years, also writing for variousmusic publications in my spare time. I left themastering studio in late 1999 to become a fulltime music consultant and writer. How did your interest in Caravan develop?I became a fan of Caravan later than most, just as

they split in 1982! A friend managed a secondhand record shop in Bristol and introduced meto "For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night".From there I became hooked!I met Pye in 1998 when I interviewed him twicefor a US publication called "Progression"magazine. Pye explained what he’d like to do withCaravan and where he’d like the band to go and Ioffered to help.Things developed from there. How did your involvement with theanthology CD and re-issues come about?Pye asked me to investigate Universal’sintentions with the Caravan catalogue as theyhad just acquired PolyGram who owned Decca.Universal were keen to reissue the albums andasked me to get involved on a consultancy level. They gave me a free hand in directing the projectand we extremely co-operative and receptive tomy ideas.Your excellent sleeve notes on the CDsprovide Caravan fans with a great insightin relation to the band’s development. How did you undertake the research?Ah, that’s my secret, it’s my job! – Seriously, Iwent through old copies of "NME", MelodyMaker" etc. and spoke at length to Pye, trying tojog his memory. Decca archives also containeddetails on recording sessions that proved veryuseful.Pye evidently has an archive of groupmemorabilia etc.Did you find him and therest of the band co-operative about theproject?Pye was invaluable in preparing the reissues, although he wasn’t too keen on listening tostudio out-takes in case there were anyembarrassing mistakes. He left that to me!You obviously unearthed a lot of old tapesthat demonstrate how the song writingprocess evolved on certain numbers. Howdid you manage to locate them? The material was all in Decca’s tape archive.Theirarchivist Jayne Byrne was a huge help in pointingme in the direction of any recordings. Also, ithelped to know dates of key recordings such asThe New Symphonia Concert. All I found on thetape boxes for that concert was the date of

recording. Putting two and two together it wasobvious that they had been recorded at DruryLane and so they were listened to as a priority. The remastering appears to have been agreat success in terms of soundproduction. Did you have any input intothe choice of Julian and Pascal Byrne?Pye and I wanted Julian to mix the previouslyunreleased multi-track recordings and Deccahad no objections. Paschal was the choice ofDecca, but proved to be a true professional. He’s a great mastering engineer and I don’t useanyone else on the projects I co-ordinate.You must take a lot of credit for findingout about the album sales in the UK,which led to the band’s gold and silverdiscs. How did you manage that? It wouldalso seem to suggest that Caravan shifted

a lot of albums worldwide over the years?Decca gave me the sales figures and I suggestedthat it would be a good promotional tool for thereissues if the band were presented with theoutstanding Gold and Silver discs. They agreedand as a result the press Caravan received wasexcellent and Universal were happy! As the discswere awarded on sales up to 1980, it doesappear that Caravan have shifted over 250,000units on their Decca albums alone.Universal has plans to re-issue the firstalbum and Fairfield Hall concert. Do Itake it they were pleased with the re-issues?To date the total figures on all six albumsamount to around 35,000 sales, which is superfor back catalogue. I think that it took Universalby surprise, but they were very happy all the

same! The first album was supposed to come outin February 2001, but the delays occurred due tomissing paperwork etc. and swapping the releaseto a different label other than Verve. Also, wewanted to track down the original master, whichwas found in New York. This was flown to theUK and we worked from that. The finished resultis fantastic and the artwork by Phil Smee is alsogreat. I’m afraid that as the reissue has the Monoand Stereo mixes (which are very different) andthey are taken from the original masters, thegeneral package makes the HTD reissueredundant! The Fairfield Hall masters were located in Marchthis year and have been cleaned up.They containa version of "Chance of a Lifetime", whichalthough credited on the "Best of Caravan Live"album isn’t actually on the original album. Also,we are planning a specially commissionedpainting to grace the cover. It will be well worthwaiting for!Any chance of them being interested inthe new material the band are recording?Unfortunately, the average age of people inUniversal’s current catalogue department is 25! Idon’t think there is much chance of thishappening! If the people in charge of backcatalogue could also sign bands, it would be adifferent story, but alas that’s the way it is!There seems to be an interest in the bandworldwide at the moment, and I wasinterested to learn that they are scheduledto play Japan early next year. How did thatcome about and are you going?I think the reissues are the main reason for theinterest in the band overseas at the moment.TheJapanese concerts came about when a fan calledTakeo Matsui flew from Tokyo with his wife tocome to London for the Caravan Gold discpresentation in Fulham. After the gig he spokewith Pye and myself and asked if there was anychance of Caravan coming to Japan. I explainedthat the problem was getting a Japanesepromoter interested, but the band would love togo.Within two weeks of him returning to TokyoI got an email from a Japanese promoter offeringthe shows in January.Takeo had contacted them

and pressured them into arranging some Tokyoconcerts! I am travelling with the band and I’mlooking forward to it immensely! I think the factthat Universal in Japan have released the reissuesis also helpful. Are you working with any other bands atthe moment?I am working on lots of reissues for Universal atthe moment and am working particularly closelywith John Lees and Woolly Wolstenholme ofBarclay James Harvest on reissuing all of theirPolydor material next year. I am also working onreissues for and in conjunction with Camel,DavyGraham, Egg, Khan, Pink Fairies, John Mayall andTenYears After. In addition, I’m preparing the reissue of an albumcalled "Introspection" by a band called The End.The album was recorded in 1967 at OlympicStudios when the Rolling Stones were recording"Satanic Majesties".The band were managed andproduced by Bill Wyman and the record alsofeatures Charlie Watts. It’s similar to the SmallFaces "Ogden’s" album and is great. The band’sguitarist is now Bill Wyman’s manager and I’ll beworking in consultation with him and with Bill onthe project, which is something, I’m very excitedabout. Finally, I’ve just finished a 3CD set called"Legend of a Mind" for Decca, which is ananthology of their underground and progressivebands spanning the era 1967 – 1976.This includesthe aforementioned acts and also features ThinLizzy,The Moody Blues, Savoy Brown,T2, MellowCandle, Curved Air, Darryl Way’s Wolf, PeteBrown,The End and many more!FUTURE PLANS?To get a new Caravan album licensed to a goodrecord company and to keep on doing more ofthe same! I would like to take the CanterburyFestival one stage forward by making it a two-day event next year with camping, but I’ll have tosee if I have the time to get involved! Also, I’d liketo get Caravan to South America and to bookmore shows in the USA in 2002 in addition toNearFest on June 30th 2002.Mainly I just want to keep well and keep onfeeling very grateful to be lucky enough to dowhat I do!

For someone, like me, living in Scotland, serious consideration needs to be givenabout whether to make the long journey toCanterbury to attend the annual soundfestival. Promptings from Codge Barber,Ralph Cross and my long suffering wife whotells me that I live in the "planet Caravan"anyway, made the decision making processlast no longer than a few seconds (if that).

Courtesy of GO airline, it was with pleasurethat I linked up at Stansted on the Fridayafternoon with Codge, Ralph and Ralph’sfriend John for the onward trip toCanterbury. Such were our discussions onroute that we ended up in Dover. A quicktrip back round the roundabout allowed usto reach by late afternoon our residence forthe next two nights, the WincheapGuesthouse, Canterbury.

Following a quick cup of tea and a wash, wewere out of the traps and heading towardsthe local hostelry "the Blind Dog" for thestart of the evening. I think we were allexpecting the Blind Dog to be a typicallyquaint Kentish pub. Instead we found a fairlytrendy wine bar/pub whose normal clienteleis probably on average 20 years youngerthan each of us. However the Caravantheme is maintained there: the front panelon the cigarette machine is a blow up of theBlind Dog album cover. And we received afriendly welcome and great service from allof the staff. We also had the good fortune tobump into Jasper Smit, and long standing fansMick Peterson and his wife.

By chance, some of the band and theirentourage arrived at the pub mid evening. Ithas to be said that our leader looked fairlystressed out on entry, but this was hardlysurprising given that he had been rehearsingthe band, and at the same time trying to tie

up the organisationalarrangements at the site.Everyone was quite sociableand it was therefore enjoyablechewing the fat with CathyHastings, Doug Boyle,Simon Bentall, AnneMarie (Jimmy’s daughter)and all the others. RichardSinclair also popped in towardsthe end of the evening. Atchucking out time we headedback to the guesthousewhere we had somedifficulty getting the door key in the lock!

The next morning, following a goodbreakfast, we headed for the festival site.Situated just outside Faversham, the site is anatural amphitheatre in a very picturesquelocation. A quick hello to Mark and VickiPowell (also suffering the stresses oforganising the day) and we headed for ourpatch of grass. The day kicked off with theyoung three piece Josiah who probablyproduced the loudest set of the day. TheHamsters followed: although beset bysound difficulties they produced athoroughly enjoyable set, particularly onHendrix and ZZTop numbers. To me one ofthe highlights of the day was Osibisa. It hasbeen a good few years since I encounteredthem and despite a number of personnelchanges (one of which was describedgraphically byArthur Brown) over the yearsthey produced an excellent funky set andgot the sizeable crowd on their feet.

During Osibisa’s set I bumped into threeyoung lads from Glasgow: Malcolm, Chrisand Gregor who had driven down for theevent. They were some of the bunch who

had given Caravan such a rousing receptionat the Renfrew Ferry gig, last year.(Incidentally Pye and the rest of the lads, they are wondering when you will berepeating the event.) The boys were verypleased when Doug Boyle introducedhimself, and they insisted he sign theirautograph book!

Arthur Brown was an entertaining MC andintroduced Caravan as one of the bandsthat had managed to live as long as him.Theband were on top form and at around4.45pm blasted into their familiar set: Oikwas followed by Memory Laine/ Headloss

and the Dog. Travelling Ways wasfollowed by one of the bestversions of Nightmare I haveever heard. Geoffrey and Dougsparked off each other; and it hasto be said that Geoffrey seemedto be on fire during the wholeset. The band then went into the Medley,Nine Feet Underground where David wasexcellent, and a rousing version of ForRichard with great percussion from Simonand Richard. The band went off to amarvellous reception and were called backfor an encore. This is where the interestingbit happened. Two ex-members arrived on

stage: Jan Schelhaas to share keyboardduties with David, and the unexpectedarrival (apparently also to some bandmembers) of Richard Sinclair. Richard tooklead vocals on a highly enjoyable Golf Girl, the band finishing off with "If I could" to agreat audience reaction.

I had never heard PorcupineTree before thefestival, but Ralph assured me they were anexcellent act. I hadn’t realised that theyincluded two ex-members of Japan. Theband had certainly a sizeable and loyalfollowing and certainly didn’t disappointwith their sound and musicianship. By thistime it was pouring down. We decidedduring Arthur Brown’s rendition of Fire tohead for the hills. Having read theIndependent’s review of the Festival, I thinkwe may have missed one of the highlights,Hawkwind. Apologies. We headedsubsequently for a quick pint at the Sun Inn,Faversham then back to Canterbury for aquick bite and early night.

Highlights: spotting the "Golf Girl" on Fridayand Saturday, meeting a great bunch ofCaravan fans (and some of the band);sharing a few pints with old acquaintancesand being introduced to Maurice Haylett –a great character. The festival bill was alsowell put together and catered for the tastesof most people.Thanks.

YOUR LETTERS and EmailsChristopher QuinnSerious Caravan fan here and can't wait to get toCanterbury for the festival in August which looksfantastic. I saw Caravan at the Renfrew Ferry gig inGlasgow last year and it rocked. We were the crazy kidsdown the front and I am sure Caravan remember us.We were so memorable actually that a gig review in theGlasgow Herald mocked us for being so young and intoCaravan. I will continue to be bloody excited about theforthcoming festival in Canterbury. Keep it up.

Comment from Eric -The band and those of us who had the privilege to beat the Renfrew Ferry gig, that memorable night, certainly won’t forget Chris and his crew! Theycertainly got the place going, and received a verypositive mention in my review which appeared in anearlier edition of "Where but…" . I’ve managed tofind the Glasgow Herald review, penned by RobAdams, to which Chris refers…"The bassist used to work for Anita Harris, announcesour emcee, more to underline veteran credentials thanimpress. Gracious, the kids at the front won’t knowAnita Harris from Bomber Harris. Our emcee has some credentials himself, includingonce mesmerising Tim Buckley backstage with hisguitar skills, although tonight he’s "limiting" himself toviola, flute, mandolin, and Golf Girl’s joyous return tohorse-drawn Caravan days, spoons. The youngsters may knowTim’s son, Jeff. They certainlyknow their Caravan, conducting their heroes throughtime changes conceived, surely, before they werethemselves.Uncool though it may be, I have much affection forCaravan myself. Unlike my junior colleagues, however, Iapproached this with caution.I last saw them in 1978 and they were well past theirbest. Here, though, with three quarters of the originalline-up, including talismanic keyboardist Dave Sinclair, and four recruits gathered along the way, they playedwith notable vim.It wasn’t perfect. Sinclair’s keyboards didn’t always cutthrough and Pye Hastings, a Tomintoulian despite the"Canterbury Scene" connections, remains vocallyrather lightweight, albeit likeable. He also has all therock ‘n’ roll appearance of an off-duty Cabinet Minister. But he’s writing strong riffs again, soliciting, alongside

the impressive Doug Boyle, many air guitarimpersonators on more recent material such as thedistinctly hummable Liar and I Know Why You’reLaughing. Add the unexpected inclusion of Sinclair’sclassic contribution to the RobertWyatt catalogue, thelovely O’Caroline and a booting If I Could Do It AllOver Again, alongside their marathon masterpieceNine Feet Underground and it’s a surprisingly satisfyingexperience. Maybe not a full-scale revival but theCaravan is rolling again for sure."David Ruffle -Originally got into Caravan through mylove of Camel but the band is certainly no appendage.Bought the remastered CD's of Grey and Pink andplump yesterday...excellent and great value..if I ever gettired of listening to Memory Lain,Hugh/Headloss thenI'll know I'm dead!!!Kent Kaled - I've been a BIG "Caravan" fan ever sincethe 70's. I just spent the last year collecting almostevery one of their releases on CD through auctions onebay and buying over-priced imports at special-interestmusic stores. Now that I've pretty much completedmy collection.........THEY FINALLY RE-RELEASE ALL OF THEIR OLDERDECCA STUFF!!!Not only that, they've been digitally remastered, include bonus tracks, and are reasonably priced,(compared to what I paid). I can't believe it. At leastmaybe I'll actually get to see them play live someday?ScottWilson - Hi Caravan fans and any members ofthe band who see this. I would just like to say that thealbum in the land of grey and pink has been played onmy cd player more than any other cd i own. i don'tknow any other stuff apart from the first album whichis ok.The album cover is great, straight out of lord ofthe rings which i am a big fan of. I will try anddownload more caravan stuff and would appreciate anysuggestions. If any band member would like to emailme i would be over the moon and pigs will fly.Brindle Brown - Former Canterbury residentnow in Tampa, Florida. Tell Pye Hastings & GeoffRichardson they both owe me a pint for scouring USCD stores for their albums! They'll definitely owe metwo if I ever buy one!Joe Beauchez, Australia - I've just returned fromanother holiday in Europe and was very pleased to pickup some Caravan CD's which I didn't have yet. The2CD "Back on the tracks", All over you, Songs foroblivion fishermen, a few re-releases and some moreobscure material. Absolutely brilliant stuff. You don'thear anything about Caravan at this side of the globeso it's great to have a CaravanWebsite to keep me intouch about what's happening with the band. Keep thatCaravan rolling and if I could do it all over again, Iwould most certainly do so. Keep up the good work.

YOUR LETTERS and EmailsDerek Green - Hi there as a long term Caravan fan Iwas pleased to note that an 8 date UK tour is proposedfor November, this year. I live in Nottingham and wouldlove an opportunity to see Caravan again, withouthaving to travel too far. Ironically, the last time I saw theband was actually in Nottingham when the original line-up came together to play at the Central - as it was then- TV studio for the Bedrock TV series of gigs. A veryspecial moment for me. Before that it was a gig atLoughborough Uni in about 1975, or thereabouts, andtheir appearance at the 1975 reading FestivalMartin Davenport - Having listened to theremastered and complete new Symphonia concert canI suggest to the band that they do another gig with theOrchestra at say the Albert Hall?.I'm sure it would bea sellout. Did the set at the Kings head ever getbroadcast and if so did anyone record it?Richard Cory - A site like this about one of thegreatest and most enduring bands of the progressiveera is long overdue. I will be revisiting it from time totime. I would really like to catch up with the band againafter all these years. I myself booked Caravan twice atSheffield University, in the days of "Plump in the Night"and "Cunning Stunts" and they were always greatfavourites with the students of my era.Steve Bullman - Excellent to see a good Caravanpresence on the web - great timing to coincide with theremaster releases. I bet it was a lot of work, but fromhere it looks worth it! Aren't the remasters a peach? The extras are really great, too, and truly are a "bonus"for a change. Having a new track from ItLoG&P is quitea shock! There are also Caravan features in ClassicRock and Record Collector, with news on the ItLoG&Pgold disc, so things are looking up.Richard Cory - And I thought I was the world’s onlyCaravan fan? Speaking as someone that once booked theband, Sheffield Uni. mid 70s, I have never quite lost myobsession with Caravan. In my record collection theyrank alongside the Beatles, but then I am a bit strange. Justgot some of the reissues, and I have to say that they arewell worth the very reasonable purchase price. I wouldhave bought all the reissues just to have a copy of thebonus track "I Don't Know its Name (alias The Word),what a gem. But I feel really pissed off that Decca havebeen sitting on this track for the last 30 years. In my bookit ranks alongside the classic Richard Sinclair tracks fromGrey and Pink and should have been issued in some formyears ago. So we have all lost 30 years of listening to thistrack. But as they say, better late than never.LarryVan Sanders - Greetings fromAmerica-AkronOhio: A long overdue I am not worthy to all theoffshutes of the mothership B and theWilde Flowers.Your individual and collarorative songs and sings havemade the atmosphere of our world a brighter place tolive...Poer on boys!

Peter Gutsell - Just had to drop you a line afterbuying where but for caravan would I; this is my first cdpurchase since owning many lp’s Canterbury talesbeing all I finally own! This band is awesome I cannotbelieve what I have been missing out on for all theseyears, at the tender age of 40, I grew up on the bandsearly recordings up to about 1976. Having justreviewed your web pages on the band which is nowsaved to favourites. Looks like Friday 13th was a luckyday to get re-aquatinted with the band? ThanksCaravan I haven’t stopped listening and todays onlySaturday, the wife’s going to love me!!Steven Ruckman - Greetings from the states. I justpicked up the remaster of “If I Could...” sounds great!!!!I had the pleasure of meeting Richard Sinclair andHeather Kinnear in late 1992 when he did a solo tourof the US, and again in the spring of 1993 when he,RickBiddulph and Andy Ward came through to do theCaravan of Dreams tour (I picked them up at LoganAirport, Boston. Richard was trying to convincecustoms officials that his visit was “pleasure,” notbusiness, whilst he and Rick had their guitars slungover their shoulders). They stayed with two of my bestfriends while they were in Boston. I found them all verynice people and remember that period of my life veryfondly. Had a lot of fun helping put on the gigs. Andywas great fun!! I remember he and I went to the liquorstore to buy a bottle of wine to have with dinner. Hesaw an Irish pub and, well, when we finally got back, Ithink everyone was a little upset with us and wantedto know what took so long (as dinner was ready andthey were waiting for us to return with the wine!!).anyway, I’m glad to hear Richard’s back in Canterbury

Rick Chafen - Remember the only American atlast year's Canterbury Fest? That was me.Yesterday, I decided to rearrange some wallspace, and down came a flyer that's been on mywalls for at least the eleven years I've lived here.It being so interesting and locked in its quainttime, I thought I'd send a copy to you.

and is doing well. I’ll have to try and call him. I haven’tspoken to him or heather in a few years now. if youhappen to see him or heather before I get in contactwith them, give them a big HELLO for me.THANX!! bewell and keep listening to the music!!!Chris, USA - Hi, Chris Pantazis here in Manchester,New Hampshire, USA, the day I got my first CaravanCD (Blind Dog)... I've been reading about Caravan formany years, loved British rock of all types, and lived inSussex for a year back in the mid-80's..This is actuallythe first time I'd come across a Caravan disc over here, and I gobbled it up at a used music store for theprincely sum of $4.99. I enjoyed it lots, and I'll grabmore Caravan as I come across it on my musical hunts.God Bless and Caravan on. great website!Jasper Smit - Dear Ralph and other Cisters! TheBurg Herzberg-gig was in one word stunning. I was thefirst to notice the pure enthusiasm of the public asmaster of the ceremony of merchandise (Also sellingthe universal reissues):There was a run on my Dutchlive CD, Back OnTheTracks.Never sold so many CD'sat once.Only 20 left now. Pye told me that 18thAugustis a key in the strategy of definitively establishing theCanterbury Sound festival and an essential step in re-conquering the audience.

Claudio Bonvecchio - Hello Pinkies and Lilies ! Theweb site is a must for every Caravan fan ! I'm Italianand I have to say that every Italian prog fan keeps aspecial place in his heart for Caravan and for all theCanterbury scene. We long to see the band performingin the Peninsula; make this dream come true ! CIAOKeith Maddison - I have just bought all the CDs toreplace all my old scratched albums, glad to see Caravanare still going. I first saw Caravan at the Middle Earth in1968 or 69, I was tripping out my head, and they weresinging 'Who do you think you are'.They blow my mind, after that they were my favourite and and saw themevery time I could. Love and Peace, Keith.William Hayter - Comment:What a great time weall had at Canterbury this weekend.Congratulations toall involved. The sound was also very good. I feel it isonly right to point this out as I had some critisismsabout last years sound. I thought Daves Hammondshone through wonderfully. Roll on next years event!P.S. If the organisers are reading this, how about KevinAyers or Soup Songs (Robert Wyatts band) for nextyear. Cheers!

Martyn Fallace - What a pleasant surprise to findthis web site. I was browsing through the cd racks inHMV at the w/e when I stumbled across the "If ICould..." and "LoG&P" cds with the un-releasedmaterial.All my old lps, including the Caravan stuff, havebeen lying unplayed in the spare room for more yearsthan I care to remember. It was so good to hear thisexcellent music again and to hear that they are stillplaying - I hope to catch them at the Astoria in Nov.Along with Mighty Baby, still my favourite Eng rock stufffrom the late 60's early 70's.WOW.....Manny - Wow caravan are great I just discoveredthem at 16 in 1995 from a friend who played golf girlto me. Unfortunately I was too young too appreciatethem properly, but now I'm 22 I went out and boughtin the land of grey and pink, and the next day I had tobuy another (if i could do it all over again), then thenext day I had to buy another. Man these guys rock. Iam glad too see there still going, and hope they are gladthat they have some young fans out here. anyway I'mrabbeting on a bit. I think the grumly grimlys arecoming: see you at Canterbury. peace and respect. Rollon caravan we're with you.Sundeep Bhamra - I recently picked up a copy of'Songs for Oblivion Fishermen' and was instantlyamazed and moved by Caravan's epic works. To me thiswas progressive rock, no, in fact, music at its very best.As a young man of 24 I have been an avid andfrustrated fan of progressive rock for the last threeyears. Frustrated in the sense that it is so hard to findprogressive rock works and by the fact that it is givenso little coverage. But what I find especially infuriatingis that so much bad progressive rock seems to gorewarded and hailed as masterpieces, mentioning nonames here, i.e. Genesis andYes.And yet the brillianceof Caravan is totally unknown. Will the human raceever come to its senses?Mathias Rapp, Germany - Dear folks at Caravaninfo. With a mixture of enthusiasm and frustration Ihave just read about the upcoming "Live at CroydonFairfield Halls" CD.What a great concert with Caravanat their very peak! What an important, long overdueCD release! And what a great opportunity missed! Why? Because the concert also included a fantastic liveversion of "Cthlu Cthlu", with one of Dave Sinclair'sbest ever organ solos. (This time much clearer andmore predominant than the one on "For Girls ..."studio album, which was drowned in the rather dodgymix). How do I know this? Well, as a matter of fact Istayed with the Hastings family in Canterbury for acouple of days some 25 years ago, and there Pye let melisten to his reel to reel tape of the entire concertwhich is definitely longer than 82 minutes (as youstated). At the time I heard that tape, the double LP"Canterbury Tales" was about to be put together, andit was me who suggested to include one of the

Croydon tracks. Pye agreed, and the live version of"For Richard" was chosen. That version is now includedon the remastered "For Girls ..." CD. It would berather stupid to put that track on yet another CD andleave out "Cthlu Cthlu", of which there aren't anyother live versions available. Please think again.John Heath - Listening to Caravan at Canterburycertainly certainly took me back to pleasure times. Ithought the band sounded great and their talentscoupled with modern production values wasbarnstorming. However, it would have been best if theband were second from the end playing from 7-9pm.One of my all-time top 5 bands alongside WishboneAsh,Camel,Genesis from that era. I now have the goodfortune to be subjected to my 17-year olds daughter'slove of Indie such as Starsailor, Coldplay,Travis etc andI have to say they are great bands (Blur too). I can seewhere these bands got their influences from, even ifthey don't like to admit it. Further, I don't really thinkof caravan as prog rock having listened to them afresh.Rather a band that uses a number of influences. I let mydaughter listen to Cunning Stunts the other day andshe was quite impressed. So much so she wants to goto a Caravan gig with me come November.Well I wentto the Astoria a couple of weeks ago to see Starsailorwith her and thought they are a very good young and.So its quids pro quo. Good bands cross generations.Anyway keep up the excellent work and give myregards to the band. They were an essential part of myyouth. Good vibesDavid Miller - Have just discovered the website, andin fact have just re-discovered Caravan after a long gap.I saw them for the first time ever last year when theycame to Glasgow, and they were excellent. If you haveany influence over their touring schedule, pleaseencourage them to venture north again. Keep up thegood work.Sterling - Great web site, very informative although Imust admit I thought Caravan had long since stoppedtouring. However on a recent visit to Canterbury thebillboards and posters let me know otherwise andthen I found the web site. Having just bought all theremastered CD's......and superb they are too, I mustrequest that somehow the Band know that I would

love them to play the following live when I see them1. Nine Feet Underground2. For Richard (the live version on "Cunning Stunts" isthe best that I have heard (Croydon)

3.WinterWine4. In The land Of Grey And PinkChris - Good to meet you at the Canterbury SoundFestival, look forward to doing it again soon (will yoube at theAstoria?)Anyway, in response to your requestfor new or re-inclusions in the set list here goes in noparticular order (I will also post them on the websiteto try to stimulate some comment/response)Place of my own -Videos of Hollywood /WinterWine(I presume Unlikely unless Richard makes anotherguest appearance)Cthlu Thlu - Dabsong Conshirtoe / Love in Your Eye(to make a change from 9ft Underground and ForRichard) - Show of our Lives - Hello Hello - Mirror forthe day - Virgin on the Ridiculous - Cool Water -Nightmare - Last Unicorn (be good to see Geoff dothis again) best regardsPhil Driscoll - I been giving this a lot of thoughtrecently. The boys were on form again at theCanterbury Festival, and their performances over thelast few years have been exceptional, but I just feel thatthe introduction of new or "new" old material isrequired to stop the band from becoming slightly stale.I completely understand that they have other prioritiesand that Caravan as a band is now their hobby as such.Obviously time is not available for them to rehearsenew material to the level of standard, they currentlyperform at, but I just a little afraid that all the hardwork done in promoting them over the last few yearscould be lost if a change is not made. It was really niceto hear For Richard at Canterbury and to get RichardSinclair back on stage for the encore was a dreamcome true. For me the highlights were, and have beenfor the last few years, Nightmare, the Medley, and Ninefeet underground. I believe that Nine feet undergroundhas taken on a new lease of life since the firstCanterbury festival whereupon David's playing wasexceptional and the combination play of Geoff, Davidand Doug was mind blowing. I therefore think thesenumbers should stay on their set.My set would be, not including new material, but pleasedo:-Smelly Oik - Cold as ice - Nine feet underground -Travelling ways - Ride (this is an outstanding track onthe All over you too album) - Back to front - Liar - Iknow why your laughing - Love song (with or withoutflute) - The Medley - NightmareThe Last unicorn (yes, that could work well withDougie) - Place of my own - For RichardJohn Heath - I have recently listened to the live CD ofCaravan at the London Astoria. That CD was superbwith three songs I had not heard before but I think the

YOUR LETTERS and Emailsband have got even better i.e. a tighter unit since thenthrough performing together if Canterbury is anythingto go by.The whole band are working in great harmonyagain but I have to say Doug Boyle's guitar playing hasadded an edge of steel to the sound and that has addeda heavier element whilst not losing sight of the beautiful, melodic passages that are caravan's hallmark - the abilityto combine shades and textures, the soft and the hardrock elements that set Caravan apart and have madethem a multi-dimensional band. Without wittering onand eulogising too much lol, here are my suggestions:Retain - Memory Lain & Headloss, Nine FeetUnderground (an all-time classic - wonderful), TheDog,The Dog, He's At It Again, Cold As Ice ( a lovelyballad with a powerful guitar solo), Liar (poignant andevocative), For Richard (Caravan at their best - haseverything. a lovely melody followed by a searingclimax, not an orgasm lol although its the next bestthing) and the fun song Golf Girl. Consider adding:Lover/No Backstage Pass or Welcome the Day fromCunning Stunts. The Dabsong Concerto is also worthconsidering because I think it would transfer itself wellinto the live format like Nine Feet Underground does. Please please please ask Pye to consider adding TheLast Unicorn, Nightmare, Piano Player - all great songsin their different ways. And definitely Winter Wine. Agood start to the set might be The Show of Our Livesor Behind You as one is a belting opening song songsetting the scene and the other is an up tempo fun lyricrock song.A great anthem for an encore would be AllThe Way from Blind Dog At St Dunstans. This is ananthem and a great chorussy type song that I thinkwould bring the house down.My daughter,Naomi whois 17 would love to meet the band - she is a cellist andpianist (more the former than the latter as she hasplayed the latter for 8 years). I know this might bedifficult but I would be grateful if you could ask Pye ifthis was possible. It intrigues me that kids who enjoy

Indie bands very much enjoy the old rock music of thelate 60's, early 70's because in many ways they werethe predecessors of modern music with its. The veryfirst Caravan album I listened to was For Girls WhoGrow Plump in the Night when I was 16, and thesecond was In The Land of Grey and Pink. These wereseminal albums in my youth. I hope this gives Pye someidea of an intinery. I am very grateful to be given thechance to make suggestions to a band who are andalways will be one of my favourite all-time bands (and Idon't say that lightly).Steve Kinder - Here's my set list for theAutumn tour.I'm assuming we will hear new material by then andhave left time for this. I have also tried to change someof the older material. Although I love both Nine FeetUnderground and For Richard I think it would be goodto freshen the set up. Anyway I have heard Nine Feettwice and For Richard once in the last 12 months:), andwould like to hear some more of my favourites. I havetried to balance old and new whilst trying not to go toolong. I may have failed on the last point.Main setWhere but for Caravan would I be - Love inyour eye - NewTracks (15 mins) - Liar -TravellingWays- The dog, the dog, he's at it again - Virgin on theridiculous - Winter Wine New Tracks (15 mins) -Dabsong conshirtoeEncores Hoedown -WinterWineOther close runners Place of my own - Properjob/Back to front - L'auberge du sanglier ... - If I coulddo it again ... -Waterloo LilyI reckon the main set would be about 100 mins, perhapstoo long. However why not let the lads have a breakhalf way and make it 2 hours? Having had a wonderfulweekend at the Canterbury festival recently. Finallymany thanks for the excellent web pages, keep up thegood work. If you want any specific help just ask.
