Every day, thousands of things happen in a hospital. Blood pressures are

checked. ivs are started. Joints are replaced. Babies are born. Blocked

arteries are opened. Cancer cells are killed. X-rays are taken. surgical

tools are sterilized. meals are served. Flowers are delivered. Floors are

swept, scrubbed, and polished.

there are literally too many things to count. But each one — each

detail, observation, action — does count. Because when it comes to

your health, everything matters.

at Community hospital of the monterey Peninsula, we are committed to

being thoughtful about every endeavor and every detail, no matter how

small, regardless of how large. We are committed to being a community

hospital and a critically acclaimed one — in ways you can count, in

outcomes you can measure.

We are fixing broken hearts, preserving quality of life for stroke

patients, and making cancer patients feel safer throughout their

journey. We are replacing worn-out hips and knees, getting diabetes

under control, and helping people change their lives through bariatric

surgery.

When we ask our patients and our doctors how we’re doing, they

emphatically say they would recommend Community hospital to a

family member or friend.

and that’s why everything matters.

Community hospital of the monterey Peninsula has always stood for high-quality healthcare

delivered efficiently in a safe, healing environment. today, amid ongoing changes and

challenges in healthcare, we must continue to build on our history of excellence in ways that

give our patients and their families renewed confidence in Community hospital and all that

we represent.

in 2011 we again faced rising costs, reduced government reimbursements, and uncertainty

surrounding healthcare reform. in that environment, strong leadership and adherence to a

comprehensive strategic plan once again enabled Community hospital to maintain a healthy

financial position, while continuing to move forward and garner accolades.

you will read about some of those distinctions in this report, including our certification in

advanced inpatient diabetes care by the Joint Commission, the nation’s leading healthcare

accreditation organization, and our Comprehensive Cancer Center’s second consecutive

outstanding achievement award from the american College of surgeons.

staff members also excelled on individual levels. dr. anthony Chavis, vice President of

medical affairs and Patient safety officer, received the national healthcare administrator

award for his leadership in infection control. Charlene Webber-schuss, director of health

information technology, was named one of the nation’s top 25 clinical informaticists for

integrating technology and healthcare. dr. steven Packer, President/CEo, was named

Chair of the California hospital association Board of trustees, representing more than

400 hospitals and health systems.

at the same time, we met significant financial milestones. We continued our successful

efforts to reduce costs to be as affordable as possible to our community. and we were

among the first 10 percent of hospitals in the nation to receive federal stimulus funds —

$2.3 million — for our early adoption of an electronic health record system.

Every member of the Board of trustees recognizes the many accomplishments of this

outstanding organization and is grateful for the opportunity to contribute to its pursuit of

excellence. We also recognize and thank our many donors and friends for their support of

our mission.

When it comes to your health, everything matters. our dedicated employees, medical staff,

and volunteers take these words to heart every day. it takes the expertise of an entire

team to ensure the seamless delivery of the highest-quality healthcare to residents of the

monterey Peninsula and beyond.

When it comes to your health, everything matters.

those eight words embody Community hospital’s approach to healthcare. our attention to detail is

recognized in many ways — through an accreditation earned from a national review organization,

by meeting or exceeding a recognized patient-care standard, or receiving high marks on a patient

experience survey, for example.

We achieved many such milestones in the last year and we share them with the community as they

happen, so that our patients, potential patients, and community supporters recognize that we are

continually striving to provide the best, safest, and most efficient care. We also share them with you in

this annual report, and we do it in two ways: through data such as statistics and financial information,

and through our patients themselves.

We can tell you that we do more joint replacements than anyone else in the area, but when Ben

alexander tells you how two new hips extended his career as a golf pro, we think that tells the real

story. When you read about the heart surgeries of larry morago, Werner motzel, and lynn dittrich, our

open-heart surgery success rates become more than just numbers. and when velma Evans relates how

her faith, family, and her healthcare team helped her deal with breast cancer, you get a sense of what

it takes to receive an outstanding achievement award for our breadth of cancer care.

taken together, the personal stories and the hard data combine to illustrate our promise to you:

“our goal is to provide compassionate care

and to meet the needs of the patient and

the family,” says Julie giguere, supervisor

of radiation oncology. “We have many

services that go beyond the essential clinical

treatment, such as access to a dietitian,

social workers, financial counselors, a

transportation program, a lending library,

and many support groups. We want patients

to be able to focus on themselves and their

healing.”

Evans was able to do that, relying on her

family, friends, and faith.

“Chemo wasn’t fun,” she says, “but i thank

god the medicine was there to help me heal,

and that the hospital staff was there to get

me through it. i did lose my hair, but i never

worried about that because i’ve always been

one for hats.”

after Evans finished radiation therapy,

she took part in a radiation oncology

department rite of passage: With the staff

who had cared for her gathered round, she

rang a bell to commemorate

the end of her

treatment.

“i had promised myself i wouldn’t cry,” she

says. “But i did. i had gotten so used to going

up there; these people became like family. i

knew i would miss them. But i also knew it

was time to move forward.”

nearly two years later, Evans has put the

cancer diagnosis, the surgery, the radiation,

and the chemotherapy behind her. she turned

75 in april and looks forward to celebrating

her 57th wedding anniversary with husband

robert Evans in august. she also looks

forward to working in her garden.

“Everyone has their sanctuary, their place to

go, whether it’s their typewriter, the kitchen

table or, in my case, my garden,” she says.

“i have a sense of peace when i go out there;

it is my other place of healing and gratitude.

and it rewards me with the beauty of

the blossom.”

Velma Evans cried the day she

got the news: you have breast

cancer. then, she was grateful.

grateful that it had come

when she was 73 years old

and had already raised

7 children, had 13 thriving

grandchildren, and was

doting on 4

great-grandchildren.

at that point in her life, she was ready and

able to devote her time and attention to

healing.

Evans had a healthy outlook on life and a

history of clear mammograms, which made

the diagnosis unexpected. yet she wasn’t

about to ask, “Why me?”

“sure, i cried that first day,” says Evans,

“but i wasn’t going to let it get to me. i

knew who was going to take care of me. i

had worked for Community hospital for four

years, and i had been a patient there when i

had pneumonia. i had seen both sides of the

organization. it’s hard to put into words, but i

can’t say enough about ChomP. i had skilled,

friendly, compassionate people taking care

of me. i was never just a number; they let me

know i mattered.”

dr. ronald Chaplan replaced alexander’s

joints with high-tech metal and synthetic

components. Each hip now includes a

prosthetic ball-and-socket assembly on a

stem, anchored into the thigh bone.

Chaplan performed the surgery at Community

hospital of the monterey Peninsula, which

does more hip and knee joint-replacement

surgeries than any other hospital in the

region.

“Ben is a great example of what people can

attain,” Chaplan says.

alexander’s saga began in 1992, when

pain in his right hip led to a diagnosis of

arthritis. By 2002, he was limping in agony

but unnerved by the prospect of surgery. he

wrote to golf legend Jack nicklaus, whose

own hip surgery had been widely reported.

nicklaus wrote back, golf pro to golf pro,

about his positive experience. Encouraged,

alexander had his first hip surgery in 2003

and was back teaching golf in

nine weeks.

in 2009, after sharp pain invaded his left hip,

he had his second hip surgery. this time, with

improvements in rehabilitation, he was back

on the course and teaching in three weeks

— one-third the time. today he feels no pain

and marvels at his range of motion.

“the orthopedic surgeons at ChomP are

angels,” says alexander, who hopes to

continue playing and teaching golf into

his 80s.

Chaplan says there is no reason to believe

that won’t happen. Chaplan has practiced

orthopedics in monterey since 1981 and says

joint-replacement surgery has special value

for this region’s aging population, who tend

to favor active lifestyles.

“We have been able to keep people involved

in athletics,” Chaplan says. “Forty or 50 years

ago, someone with hips like Ben’s would have

been in a wheelchair.”

Ben Alexander has what you would call

a sweet golf swing: smooth and rhythmic,

with a burst of power that sends the ball

soaring as he swivels his hips. Except

those are not his hips, exactly.

alexander balances effortlessly on a pair of

hip implants, his reconstructed joints enabling

him not only to keep working as a Pga golf

instructor but to maintain an impressive

level of play. at 61, he can drive the ball 265

yards — free of pain and discomfort. it is

a dramatic turnaround from a decade ago,

when arthritis wracked his hips and left him

hobbled.

“surgery gave me my life back,” says

alexander, the 2004 teacher of the year for

the northern California Pga section and

an instructor at Poppy hills golf Course in

Pebble Beach and Pacific grove golf links.

“it allowed me to continue my career as a

golf professional.”

the secret to his newfound longevity is clearly

visible on his X-rays — his hips look like the

joints have been replaced with the front-end

parts from a showroom Chevy. indeed, when

alexander was wheeled into surgery for

his first hip replacement, the array of tools

reminded him of an automotive garage.

a lot to losE

vierra and dr. michael lurie have performed

more than 1,400 bariatric surgeries at

Community hospital for patients like duffy,

committed to reducing their weight and

improving their overall health.

“Weight loss is the visible, dramatic result of

bariatric surgery,” vierra says. “But the real

impact is even more significant: three major

studies have shown that weight-loss surgery

saves lives because of fewer deaths from

diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.”

admittedly, duffy was scared about having

surgery. But she was even more scared

about what would happen if she didn’t. on

new year’s Eve 2010, she underwent gastric

bypass surgery and woke up to a new year

and a new life.

sixteen months later, duffy has lost 134

pounds and the threats of diabetes and high

blood pressure have subsided. she no longer

watches her kids play sports; the one-time

avid athlete joins in again. you might even

see her around the Peninsula, pedaling the

pink schwinn® bicycle she bought herself

as a reward.

“What shook me into my decision,” she says,

“was when dr. vierra said, ‘you wouldn’t

do drugs in front of your kids, wouldn’t give

them alcohol or hand them a cigarette, but

you put sugar and fast food in front of them.’

my goal was to wrap my mind around that

and instill healthy habits in my children. i

don’t want them to have any other legacy

from me. i want to parent by example and

give my kids a brighter future. one that

includes me.”

a single parent of three young

children, Vivian Duffy

simply couldn’t afford to

die. a 26-year-old woman

doesn’t usually think about

such things. But on the eve

of duffy’s 27th birthday, at her

annual physical exam, the scale and

the doctor flashed bright warning

signs. her fluctuating weight had hit

343 pounds, and she was on the verge

of diabetes and high blood pressure.

“in that moment, my life flashed before my

eyes,” she says. “i thought of my three little

children and how quickly i might leave them.

i knew then that i needed to get control of

my health; i needed to change things. i knew

i needed help.”

she had to find the answer to two haunting

questions: “how did i get here?” and “how

do i get out?”

dieting and exercise had provided only

temporary fixes, so she turned to dr. mark

vierra to discuss surgical options. vierra

established the bariatric surgery program

at Community hospital in 2001 after

overseeing stanford’s program for more than

a decade. in 2006, Community hospital

became one of the first bariatric Centers of

Excellence in California, recognized for safe,

high-quality surgical care.

he had a list of goals: eat well, exercise, lose

weight, and get his type 2 diabetes under

control. and he felt good, especially about

his decision to join the club. But after his

workout and a hot shower, as he stepped

into the locker room to dress, he felt himself

falling, passing out, disappearing. he put

out his arm to brace his fall, managed a faint

“help,” and then died.

CPr revived him, and then paramedics

arrived and took him to Community hospital.

as Kaza was wheeled into the Emergency

department, he remembers waking up —

both in the moment and for the long-term.

“dying is a tremendous wake-up call,” he

says. “there is nothing like it to make you

realize how fragile and how precious life is.”

Kaza had been felled by a sudden cardiac

arrest, and he is determined not to be among

the 30 percent of people who have a second

one. For inspiration, he has some family

history of beating the odds.

John Kaza thought the water was a little too hot, but he liked how

it felt as he slipped between the soothing soak in the hot tub and the

chilly plunge of the swimming pool. a member at the fitness club for

just one week, the 5-foot-10-inch, 282-pound Prunedale man was

making an investment in his health.

“my father was born at a mere 28 ounces

in 1924 and went on to become the real life

mr. holland’s opus, the music director at

grant high school,” where the movie was

filmed, Kaza says.

Boosting Kaza’s odds are an implanted

defibrillator/pacemaker and expert guidance.

“While it listens to my heart to keep it steady

and to shock me in the event of another

cardiac arrest,” he says, “i’m listening to the

dietitians at the hospital to keep myself on

track.”

Kaza came to the right place. in 2011,

Community hospital earned the Joint

Commission’s advanced certification for

inpatient diabetes care. the accreditation

means that Community hospital’s staff is

specially trained to identify, educate, monitor,

and care for patients with diabetes or at risk

of having the disease.

“mr. Kaza has a history of heart disease and

diabetes, factors that go together,” says

sabah al-marashi, rn, clinical coordinator

for the inpatient diabetes program, which

worked with him when he was hospitalized.

“diabetes fuels cardiovascular disease by

putting the body in an inflammatory state.

When blood sugar is too high, and there

is also high blood pressure, there is an

increased risk of stroke or heart attack.

“he was trying very hard to control it on his

own, but he had gotten to the point where

oral medication wasn’t working for him. our

dietitians taught him how to modify his diet.

you don’t have to lose a lot of weight to

make a change; 10 percent can make a big

difference in blood sugar levels.”

Kaza’s motivation is paying off.

“i eat no more than 1,400 calories a day

now, and i’ve already lost 45 pounds, which

has made a big difference in my blood sugar,”

he says. “i was taking four glucotrol® a day

to lower my blood sugar, and now i take

half a tablet. i was going to have to stay on

insulin, but now i probably won’t.

“it always felt to me like there was time to

get healthier. it no longer feels like there is

another time; the time is now.”

it was just a dizzy spell, he told himself.

But, home alone, something nagged at him

enough to call Peggy at work. it was probably

nothing, he said; maybe he just needed some

water.

his slurred words told her otherwise.

“We had been through this before,” says

Peggy, “about five years ago. and laura

hodge, the stroke coordinator at ChomP, had

said never to trust a stroke patient when they

say, ‘i’m oK; don’t worry.’ they aren’t able to

determine that.

“i told Clay to sit down, and i called 9-1-1.”

When Peggy and paramedics arrived, Clay’s

speech had worsened, his right eye was

cast outward, and the right side of his face

drooped — classic signs of stroke.

Paramedics took him to Community hospital,

the only certified stroke center in monterey

County at the time. the designation, by the

nation’s leading healthcare accreditation

organization, means staff is specially trained

to provide the most advanced, proven

treatment for stroke.

“i remember when the ambulance drivers

said, ‘if it’s a stroke, we go right to ChomP,’ ”

Clay says. “and i remember the ride to the

hospital, but not much about my emergency

room experience.”

Peggy remembers every moment. “Everyone

moved so quickly yet remained so calm,” she

says. “they explained everything they were

doing; no one ever ignored me. i wondered

why they had to run tests before they could

give any medicine to my husband. they said

they had to know whether it was an ischemic

stroke, which meant there was a blood clot,

or a hemorrhagic stroke, which would have

meant a burst blood vessel. the treatment

would be very different.”

Clay had suffered an ischemic stroke, so the

stroke team began administering the clot-

busting drug tissue plasminogen activator

(tPa). after a half-hour, his head ached,

he was vomiting, and his heart rate fell

precipitously. the team scanned his head for

a second time, to make sure there was no

bleeding in his brain.

there wasn’t. the headache and nausea

subsided, and his heart rate rose.

“By early evening,” hodge says, “his slurred

speech and roaming right eye were almost

completely normal. By the next morning, his

symptoms had completely disappeared.”

it’s the outcome the stroke team strives for;

avoiding the devastating disabilities that so

many stroke survivors face and enabling them

to mark major milestones — like golden

anniversaries.

Peggy and Clay Curvin celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary by exchanging a new

vow: We will both be around for our golden 50th. months later, that promise was nearly

broken. For the second time in two years, Clay suffered a stroke.

Larry Morago was a fairly typical open-heart surgery patient. at 72, his minor chest

discomfort was actually a sign of something more major: blocked arteries that required a

quadruple bypass. Lynn Dittrich did what many women do: ignored the symptoms and

kept on with her busy life — until they couldn’t be ignored any longer. Werner Motzel

needed multiple-bypass surgery, but at 51, he was relatively young for the procedure.

all three found relief through Community hospital’s tyler heart institute open-heart surgery

program, launched a little more than five years ago. since then, more than 800 patients have

had valves replaced, blocked arteries bypassed, and other life-extending cardiac surgeries

performed, with superior outcomes.

“these three patients help illustrate the spectrum of work we do,” says dr. gregory spowart,

associate medical director of cardiac surgery and the surgeon in all three cases. “our team is

versed in the complex and the more common, and we work closely with our patients, from

diagnosis to cardiac rehabilitation.”

storiEs From thE hEart Larry Morago experienced chest pain and discomfort for

years, dismissing it as a return of the asthma he suffered as a child.

But the pains were getting worse. on a thanksgiving trip to visit his

daughters, he couldn’t finish his afternoon walk and felt the need to

sleep away the day. his family thought it was heartbreak, caused by

the recent passing of Cathy, his wife of 43 years.

his doctor gave morago a stress test, followed by an angiogram.

the tests revealed that his heart was blocked, not broken. spowart

performed a quadruple bypass, creating detours around morago’s

blocked arteries using arteries or veins from other parts of his body.

the grafts opened the way for oxygen and nutrients to reach his

heart more freely.

“my first thought,” morago says, “was ‘oh no, i’m going to

have to go through a lot all over again,’ as we did with my

wife’s cancer. But for me, they identified the problem and

then fixed it. and my recovery has been very, very good.

Faster than anyone anticipated.

“i don’t know how they do it. as i think of the

operation, it’s hard to fathom how it’s possible.

and the staff and nurses at ChomP were

amazing. they walked me around starting the

next day, which began my recovery.

“looking back,” he says, “i realize all the pains

and pressures i attributed to asthma over the

years were heart issues. my doctors agree. i

think of all the times i walked into town, felt a

pain in my chest, and decided to walk through it.

until the day i couldn’t.”

Werner MotzeL grew up healthy and strong

in germany, along the rhine river. his father was a

vintner, and he also worked on the land, as a landscape

engineer. it was hard work and he blamed that for

pressure he began to feel in his chest, thinking he might

have bruised or broken a rib.

Coronary artery disease had shortened the lives of

motzel’s father and grandfather, and he took lipitor® for

elevated cholesterol. But he didn’t want to think about

that. he was, he reminded himself, only 51.

then a routine stress test led to an angiogram, which

revealed blocked coronary arteries. Within three days,

he underwent a quadruple bypass.

“i thank god it all went so fast,” says motzel.

“i didn’t have time to think about it. dr. spowart

and the whole team were very good, very kind;

they did their jobs well to motivate me to

get better.”

motzel now takes part in Community hospital’s

Cardiac rehabilitation program at Peninsula

Wellness Center in marina, which provides

exercise, education, and an individualized care

plan for heart patients.

“it’s mind-altering to have your heart stopped,”

he says. “it does change your life to a kind of

carpe diem, seize-the-day attitude.”

EVERYTHINg MATTERS Broad range of heart-related services, from nutritional counseling to cholesterol and blood pressure management to Cardiac rehabilitation at Peninsula Wellness Center

Lynn Dittrich had become keenly aware and a little

concerned about a shortness of breath and pain in the left side

of her chest. yet even more acute was her commitment to take

her 14-year-old granddaughter on a two-week trip to Egypt, and

make it a memorable experience.

she didn’t want the memory to be that “grandma had a heart

attack in Egypt,” so she vowed to be careful. she attributed her

discomfort to an earlier case of anemia and to stress.

But she didn’t think either of those needed to affect her

vacation. Except, the more walking she did in Egypt, the

worse her symptoms became. When she returned

home, she made an appointment with her doctor.

“the doctor thought i had fluid in my lungs and

noticed my swollen ankles, so he put me

on lasix® for the water retention,” says

dittrich, 65. “i had no symptoms for the next

couple of days, but that saturday night, i was

out with friends and passed out. i ended up

in the Er, where they did an EKg, which led

them to schedule an angiogram and

perhaps an angioplasty. they found so much

blockage — 90 percent in one artery —

that they skipped the angioplasty and

scheduled triple-bypass surgery.”

after the surgery, dittrich committed to her recovery.

she began an exercise program at Community

hospital’s Cardiac rehabilitation program at

Peninsula Wellness Center and shifted to a

healthier diet.

“i should have made these lifestyle changes a

long time ago,” she says. “i’ve lost 28 pounds,

and i feel great. i just graduated from the Cardiac

rehabilitation program. it was wonderful;

everyone was so supportive and encouraging.

i didn’t have a heart attack, but i could have.

and now i’m making sure i won’t.”

“Would you recommend Community Hospital to your friends and family?

it’s a question we ask patients after their hospital stay. and they resoundingly say

“yes,” in numbers well above state and national levels. the question is part of a

national survey that measures patients’ hospital experiences, and it’s hard to think

of a better barometer of confidence than a personal recommendation for something

as important as medical care. many also take the time to tell us how we made a

❚ my father was rushed to your hospital

because of a medical problem. Everyone

from the ambulance personnel to the iCu

nurses and doctors were fabulous. he

spent eight days in your hospital, and my

mother and i were impressed with the

professionalism of all the employees and

volunteers. the quick action provided by

everyone saved his life.

❚ Every nurse my family or i dealt with

was top-notch in terms of education,

knowledge, caring, and compassion. i have

lived all over the world in major cities —

Paris, new york, los angeles — and have

never received better care!

❚ i want to give a big shout out to my nurse.

she was with me my whole delivery and

she was amazing! i couldn’t have done it

without her! she was bubbly and happy

and helped me with everything! Please tell

her how wonderful she was! tell her thank

you from the mom of five kids!

❚ during my recent stay in Community

hospital, i benefited from five-star care.

high PraisE indEEd❚ thank you for an exceptional visit. i have

a terminal disease and my stay was like

heaven on earth. the staff was wonderful.

i appreciate their professionalism and

caring concern very much as does my

family.

❚ my father was recently admitted to your

hospital. this was our fourth admission

to four different hospitals in the last two

months and at every discharge we felt we

were released with no game plan and no

direction in which to head — except with

this discharge. our discharge planner took

such great care of us. she answered all my

questions and helped me with a lot of the

hurdles that i have been stuck on through

my dad’s healthcare. you are so lucky to

have her working for you and we are so

lucky to have her helping people like us.

❚ Community hospital is the best hospital.

in 1996, we started the Community Benefit Program, a way to make sure we

were doing everything we could — inside the hospital and out — to cultivate the

health and well-being of our community. through it, we have provided nearly

$1 billion in support of local organizations with health-related goals, for access

to care for thousands of people who couldn’t pay for themselves, for education

on health and wellness, and in programs for those with special needs. that

commitment continued in 2011, with nearly $146 million and 25,655

volunteer hours committed to community benefits.

PhilanthroPyCare for those who couldn’t afford it, heart and stroke education, and the maurine

Church Coburn school of nursing — those were among the services supported in

2011 through generous contributions from our community. donors provided more

than $8 million, enabling us to build on the services we have and to offer new

ones that meet changing community needs. on the following pages, you’ll find

profiles of some of our contributors and the names of many others — families,

corporations, charitable organizations, and individuals, including many of our staff

SOLOMON AND KATHY TERRY

in more than 30 years working as a nursing assistant for hospice

of the Central Coast and then Westland house, Kathy l. terry

developed an insider’s view of healthcare at Community hospital. her

perspective shifted in 2011 when she became a patient, undergoing

chemotherapy at the Comprehensive Cancer Center.

From both vantage points, her conclusion was the same: Community

hospital is a good place to provide care and to be cared for. and

that’s why Kathy contributes to the hospital’s Wellness initiative

through monthly payroll deductions.

“Kudos to the oncology unit at ChomP,” says Kathy. “they have

really good nurses there, who treat me better than royalty — like

family. the hospital has the beautiful hills to look out on, but i’m

focusing on the nursing staff and how they work together and are

kind to each other and to me. Chemo is not fun, but i look forward to

seeing them every three weeks. Can you imagine?”

Kathy’s husband, solomon terry, Jr., has also made generous

donations to the hospital, in gratitude for the care given to his

parents and to honor their memories. yet his sweetest contribution

just might be the chocolate chip cookies he likes to bring staff

members.

“Community hospital is a wonderful facility; so giving and caring,”

solomon says. “it has always been there in my time of need,

particularly when my parents were sick, to care for and comfort us.

i feel blessed to live here and have a place like this in my backyard.”

TED AND VELMA BALESTRERI

more than 30 years ago, ted and velma Balestreri began giving to

Community hospital, both personally and corporately, to help sustain

something they believe in, appreciate, and which gives them a sense

of pride.

“in the most beautiful place on the planet,” says ted, “where land

meets water and where the world-famous, historic Cannery row, the

Carmel mission, the monterey Bay, and Carmel-by-the-sea attract

visitors, one of the other great wonders is Community hospital,

where the greatest talent in the world works with the nicest people

in the world.”

ted, chairman and CEo of the Cannery row Company, served on

Community hospital’s Board of trustees from 2005 to 2010. and he

and velma have been visitors and patients for many years.

“over the years, we have visited friends in the hospital, i have been

there a couple of times myself, and it basically saved velma’s life,”

ted says. “What i’ve learned about this place is that mediocrity is

never an option. great efficiency is usually accompanied by a loss

of personalization, but not at this hospital, even as it strives for

perfection.”

most recently, he championed the development of the monterey

Program for Executive health, a concierge-type program designed

to bring regional, national, and international business leaders to the

Peninsula and Community hospital for “executive physical exams”

by a team led by dr. Craig geiler. ted was among the first executives

to make an appointment.

“if i’m going to submit to a physical exam,” he says, “i’d rather

come to the most beautiful place in the world to do it. i actually

couldn’t wait to go. i believe no matter what you have to go

through at ChomP, it won’t be quite as painful as it would be

anywhere else.”

MRS. JOHNSON’S CLASS AT ROBERT DOWN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

donors to Community hospital come in all shapes, sizes — and ages.

in 2011, second-graders from robert down Elementary school in

Pacific grove delivered 10 quilts that they helped make to comfort

babies who spend time in the hospital’s Family Birth Center nursery.

the project by denise Johnson’s class was part of a social studies

lesson on caring and kindness. Elizabeth olney, whose son Corbin

is in the class, does sewing projects at the school each year and

proposed making the quilts. she received a grant and fabric donations

from the monterey Peninsula Quilters guild, which also regularly

makes quilts for local hospitals. the class made 26 quilts and olney

added four more. they were divided among Community hospital and

the two salinas hospitals.

olney cut the fabric and each child selected two prints they wanted

to use and pinned them together wrong-side-out. olney sewed the

edges with a machine, then the children turned them right-side-out

and tied a series of square knots in a grid pattern that holds the front

and back together. Each quilt bears a label with the maker’s signature

and a message that they were a gift from the class.

“they were so excited about being able to bring these to the

hospital,” olney says.

the project incorporated lessons in math, art, and social studies,

Johnson says, and it also taught the children that in the right

circumstances, it’s oK to do something kind for a stranger.

“these quilts symbolize the support our families receive from the

community,” says Catherine Powers, rn, Family Birth Center director.

“Wrapping a baby in one of these quilts is like the community

wrapping its arms around the baby.”
