Arnold Palmer said, II I wan t to win tournaments more than anything else in theworld, II and he has done just that.

He began developing his well-known golf muscles at the ag e of three, when hisfather, 'Deacon Palmer,' a professional himself, started his boy on the road to go lffame. At the age of five Arnold was playing 18 holes with regulari ty . Everyone aroundthe Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Country Club knew Arnie Palmer, who often sw ung the c lubso fiercely that the momentum would send him sprawling on the ground. Soon, however,he would learn to control his power and pu t it to good use as part of one of the mo stas tonishing ca reers in golfing histolY.

Much has been written about this man who has risen to great fame like a meteor ,has created an era named after him, and has an army of followers that trot after hi mwhether he wins or not. His attitude of attacking the course, his tremendous ability tocharg1e from behind and his outstanding personal ity have made him on idol. Jerry Barber, one of his fellow pros on the tour says: "He goes right for the throat of a course andshakes it to death. II Again and again he has come through the field to win wit h aseemingly impossibl e shot on the fi nal dread-shrouded hole a nd in the process he hasastounded a nd elec t rified the golfing world. Wherever he goes these days, golfe rs stareat hi m with fixed expressions like swomis searching for secrets in a crysta l ball. Butvery few secrets are apparent in his manner or in his appear a nce. He is a very strongma n, 5'11 " and weights 180 pounds trained down. His hands are big, his arms andsh oulders are like those of a blacksmith. But he has a smoot h, poli shed look about him.His bea ring suggests that he is always in control of himse lf and his environment. Arnold'sot her ventures in bus inesses connected wi th golf are diversified and numerous . Still, here mai ns a 'r egu lar' on the U. S. tournament scene. Beyond tha t, he has on ma ny occasions in various corners of the world prove n hi mself an exce ll en t a mbassador of goodwi II for his country .

    Arnold Palmer'smillion-dollar swing

THROUGHOUT the swing, Arnie's head remains steady. Thisrepresents his second unyielding characteristic which, alongwith the proper grip, keeps his game at razor-sharp edge. Atthe top, his balance is maintained and the change in directionof motion is handled compactly with the left hip perhaps making the initial move back to the ball. You will notice in frame# 5 that the left hip and left knee have moved latera lly as thehands seem to maintain their position above the shoulders fromthere through frame #6 . The shoulders continue to lag behindthe hips as the hands start their downward pull. Here you mightpay attention to the manner in which the right knee, never stiff, starts to flex first toward the ball, then toward the line of fl ight

and the hands, moving fastest at impact, take the club inthrough the ball. The right elbow hugs the ri ght hip in # 7 to 8 , keeping the club in its efficient plane, and thshoulder stays inside the line as the left arm leads. Framalso discloses the delayed wrist action and the power ofugal fon:e. The left side firms up and the right side is comreleased as the clubhead contacts the ball just before the of its are, taking a divot after the hit is made. The clubsquare and is traveling in a straight line at impact, throughout by. Arn ie's "minimum of air space" grip. Textended arm and the force of the swing start to pull hfrom its fixed position, the first movement noticed in hisAll concentration has remained on the execution of the
