Pneumatic tires are the means to transfer forcesbetween the road and the vehicle.

Tires are required to produce the forcesnecessary to control the vehicle, and hence,

they are an important component of a vehicle.

The section height, tire height, or simplyheight, hT ,is a number that must be added tothe rim radius to make the wheel radius.

The section width, or tire width, wT , is thewidest dimension of a tire when the tire is notloaded.

The pan width represents the width of the rimholding the tire.

Tire manufacturers generally use this conceptduring the manufacture of wheel assembly.

Each time we add 1 inch to the rim diameter we

should add 20mm to the tire width & subtract 10%from the aspect ratio.

This is basically done to compensate the increase

in rim width and diameter & provide same overalltire radius

Radial : Reinforcing steel cable belts areassembled parallel to each other and run sideto side making 90 deg to the circumference of

the tire

Non-Radial : Also known as bias-ply or cross

ply, the plies are layered diagonal from onebead to the other bead at about a 30 deg angle,although any other angles may also be applied

Dry Tires or Slick Tires : Mostly used in highperformance racing events such as Formula One.Made up of soft rubber compounds. They providethe maximum contact patch area.

Wet Tires or Rain Tires : They have speciallydesigned tread patterns to prevent problems ofaquaplaning. They provide the least tire print.

Intermediate Tires or Inter Tires : Used in regularautomobiles. There function lies in between theDry and the wet tires.
