AugerThe auger scraper is a self-loading system that offers an alternative to conventional, push-pull or elevating scrapers. An

independent hydrostatic system powers the auger which is located near the center of the bowl. The rotating auger lifts and evenlydistributes over 50% of the material that flows over the scraper cutting edge. This action reduces the cutting edge resistance allow-ing the wheel tractor-scraper to continue moving through the cut and quickly obtain full rated loads.

USE OF RIMPULL-SPEED-GRADEABILITY CURVES

The following explanation applies to Rimpull-Speed-Gradeability curves for Wheel Tractor-Scrapers,Construction & Mining Trucks/Tractors and Artic -ulated Trucks.

Maximum speed attainable, gear range and avail-able rimpull can be determined from curves on thefollowing pages when machine weight and totaleffective grade (or total resistance) are known.Rimpull is the force (in kg, lb or kN) available

between the tire and the ground to propel themachine (limited by traction).

Weight is defined as Gross Machine Weight (kg or lb)= Machine + Payload.

Total Effective Grade (or Total Resistance) is graderesistance plus rolling resistance expressed aspercent grade.Grade is measured or estimated.Rolling resistance is estimated (see Tables section

for typical values.)10 kg/metric ton (20 lb/U.S. ton) = 1% adverse grade.

Example

With a 6% grade and a rolling resistance of 40 kg/metric ton (80 lb/U.S. ton), find total resistance.Rolling resistance = 40 kg/t ÷ 10 = 4% Effective

Grade(English: 80 lb ÷ 20 = 4%)

Total resistance = 4% rolling + 6% grade = 10%

Altitude DeratingRimpull force and speed must be derated for alti-

tude similar to flywheel horsepower. The percent-age loss in rimpull force approximately correspondsto the percentage loss in flywheel horsepower. SeeTables Section for altitude derations.

Rimpull-Speed-GradeabilityTo determine gradeability performance: Read

from gross weight down to the % of total resistance.(Total resistance equals actual % grade plus 1% foreach 10 kg/metric ton (20 lb./U.S. ton) of rollingresistance.) From this weight-resistance point, readhorizontally to the curve with the highest obtain-able speed range, then down to the maximum speed.Usable rimpull depends upon traction and weighton drive wheels.

Example problem:

A 631G with an estimated payload of 37 013 kg(81,600 lb) is operating on a total effective grade of10%. Find the available rimpull and maximum attain -able speed.

Empty weight payload = Gross Weight47 628 kg + 37 013 kg = 84 641 kg(105,002 lb + 81,600 lb = 186,602 lb)

Solution: Using graph on the next page, read from84 641 kg (186,602 lb) (point A) on top of grossweight scale down the line to the intersection of the10% total resistance line (point B).

Go across horizontally from B to the RimpullScale on the left (point D). This gives the requiredrimpull: 7756 kg (17,100 lb).

Where the line cuts the speed curve (point C),read down vertically (point E) to obtain the maxi-mum speed attainable for the 10% effective grade:12.9 km/h (8 mph).

ANSWER: The machine will climb the 10% effec-tive grade at a maximum speed of 12.9 km/h (8 mph)in 4th gear. Available rimpull is 7756 kg (17,100 lb).

The following explanation applies to travel timecharts for Wheel Tractor-Scrapers, Construction &Mining Trucks and Articulated Trucks.

One-way travel time can be determined fromgraphs on the following pages when one-way traveldistance and total resistance (expressed in percent)are known. 10 kg/metric ton (20 lb/U.S. ton) equals1% equivalent grade.

If total resistance is negative (grade assistancegreater than rolling resistance) machine may accel-erate downhill requiring the use of retarder orbrakes. Travel time charts cannot be used in thesecases. Consult respective machine retarder curve toestablish maximum safe downhill speed.

Two graphs are given for each hauling unit: onefor the machine carrying its rated payload and onefor the empty machine.

Travel times were derived using Cat Machine Simula -tion Program and standard tire inputs. Travel timesfor machines equipped with (larger) optional tiresvary slightly.

Example problem:

631G hauls its rated payload 37 013 kg — 26 bankcubic meters (81,600 lb — 34 bank cubic yards) ona 4% road for 610 m (2000 feet) and returns on a 0%road for 760 m (2500 feet). Find the cycle time.Haul —

Using the graph for the Loaded machine, readfrom the Travel Distance (one way) scale at 610 m(2000 feet) across to the 4% total resistance line(point A). From (point A) read down to the Travel Time(one way) scale to determine haul time = 1.4 minutes.

The following explanation applies to retarder curvesfor Wheel Tractor-Scrapers and Articulated Trucks.

The speed that can be maintained (without useof service brake) when the machine is descending agrade with retarder fully on can be determined fromthe retarder curves in this section if gross machineweight and total effective grade are known.Total Effective Grade (or Total Resistance) is gradeassistance minus rolling resistance.

Applications:On any given jobsite, there are several ways to

accomplish the task of hauling/moving material:

● Hydraulic excavators with articulated trucks.

● Wheel tractor-scrapers (self-loading, push load-ing, or push-pull loading).

● Wheel loaders with rigid-frame trucks.

● Agricultural tractors (tired or rubber tracked) withtowed scrapers.

● Track-type tractors dozing material.

● Track-type tractors with towed scrapers.

Towed scrapers excel for contractors removing topsoil with the following ideal conditions:

● Haul distance under 0.8 km (2500 ft).

● Materials with a bank density of less than 1780 kg/m³(3000 lb/yd³).

● No large rocks or stumps.

Towed scrapers also complement wheel tractorscrapers by expanding the work season with highflotation in the softest underfoot conditions. Addingtowed scrapers to the Cat product line gives contrac -tors more solutions for selecting the earthmovingsystem that is most cost effective for their applica-tion. Caterpillar offers the full range of earth movingand hauling machines — dozers, wheel tractor scrap-ers, towed scrapers, wheel loaders with rigid frametrucks and hydraulic excavators with articulatedtrucks.

Recommended Pull Units:Cat Towed Scrapers are designed to be pulled by
