4 What’s Up

AI Activist Ordered to UndergoPsychiatric ExaminationThis is the best one we’ve come across for a while – an Amnesty International human rights activ-ist has been ordered by a Ukrainian court to un-dergo psychiatric examination for his “excessive awareness of his own human rights and militant

insistence in defending them”. This absurd news came to light in a recent Am-nesty International report which states that the observance of human rights in Ukraine has seri-ously deteriorated under Yanukovych’s admin-istration. And sadly, many of the AI allegations are far more serious than the ludicrous example stated above. Restrictions on freedom of expres-sion are on the increase, as are cases of torture and unfair trials. “The number of allegations of torture in police stations, pre-trial detention cen-tres and prisons increased last year,” said AI’s lo-cal representative, Tetiana Mazur.

Ukraine Talks Nonsense AboutExpulsion of Czech DiplomatsThe Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has denied any connection between the expulsion of Czech diplo-mats and Prague granting political asylum to ex-Minister for the Economy, Bohdan Danylyshyn. Well, they would say that, wouldn’t they, but in the statement made by Oleh Voloshyn, Director of the information policy department (interesting name for a department) at the Foreign Ministry, it seems either Prague’s stance on Danylyshyn was a factor, or the diplomats in question are being accused of some serious spying or something of the like.Voloshyn told the press that Ukraine has a long-standing practice whereby its authorities will do every-thing they can to put an end to illegal activities against Ukraine’s national interests. “Since diplomats have immunity from prosecution, they were not brought to justice on the territory of Ukraine, but expelled,” he said, fi nishing with, “Danylyshyn has never been a factor in our stance towards offi cial Prague.”No what on earth does that mean? Probably that they’ve been kicked out due to Prague offering Danylyshyn asylum.

Embassy of God Looking for Promised LandNigerian preacher Sunday Adelaja has ap-parently realised land in Ukraine is a very valuable commodity and is trying to snatch as much of it as possible. Most recently an application for two square kilometers of land for a church appeared before the local council of Kotsyubynske near Kyiv. After some discussion, the council decided that this land was a little much for a church. The application was declined, but shortly after another application was lodged, this time for two square kilometers of woodland close to the village. The reasons for the church needing the land had also been ex-tended to include beadwork and a rehabili-tation centre for drug abusers.Sunday and his followers certainly have the audacity, but we can only hope the poor vil-lagers have the sense to decline the appli-cation.

International Rally ChampionshipComing to Ukraine for the First TimeDespite the idiots in power, Ukraine is proving more and more popular as a location for large events. Next year, we of course have the EURO 2012 football fi nals, but well before then, for the fi rst time ever, a stage in the global Intercontinental Rally Challenge will take place in Ukraine. And if you’re a fan of the sport you should get your tickets now as it kicks off in Yalta the fi rst weekend in June. The mountains around the city in Crimea should prove a great challenge for the drivers, and it seems to be something they’re all excited about. “We’re preparing for the Ukraine Rally,” Head of Skoda Motorsport Michal Hrabanek told reporters after the Corsica Rally at the weekend. “Taking place in Ukraine for the fi rst time, this rally will certainly be a big motivation for all the drivers.”So if you’re looking for a little spectacle and excitement, Yalta is the place to be fi rst weekend in June!

6 Kyiv Debates

(An impressive counter from The Lady, ending with an upper-cut to the chin that causes Pavlo to stumble)

PI: This happens only in circles of poorly edu-cated people whose tastes are based on advertis-ing and what someone tells them is cool. Live and classical music will always be for the elite.

(Pavlo is not yet recovered from the upper-cut and is clearly stunned and confused)

LK: Electronic music has become so popular be-cause its quality is improving - new technology makes it sound fantastical. That’s why people love it. I don’t agree that electronic music is for an uneducated and dull audience! Look at Eu-rope for instance. People come to nightclubs just to listen to good, high quality electronic music.

In the blue corner, for live music, we have Pavlo Ihnatiev, a top piano performer and composer. In the red corner, for electronic, is Lady Kate, one of Kyiv’s best DJs. What’s

On was the referee. Here’s how it went, with a bit of light commentary thrown in.

(The two fi ghters have entered the ring. Their trainers massage their shoulders and shout fi nal words of encouragement in their ears. They are brought together, eyes locked in battle. They promise a good clean fi ght. The bell rings. They’re off! Lady Kate delivers the fi rst punch…)

LK: My music causes people to go wild! Elec-tronic music is made for massive parties and discos. It gives you a thrill that live music just can’t deliver.

PI: How people react is different. At my concerts people sit still and listen, they don’t shake their heads. It’s almost like meditation. But what I’m doing is different too – I’m going back to the roots of music, to it’s very basis. People are just as deep-ly affected, it’s just a difference in behaviour.

(Pavlo rallies to attack his opponent in this opening round, having been caught off guard by an early hook from Lady K)

LK: It’s the effect of electronic music that makes it such a phenomenon. It allows for massive gatherings, where millions of people all round the world can enjoy amazing night parties. There are thousands of people who have switched from live music to electronic, because it’s more interesting and more impressive. You could even talk about displacing the audience.

Music to my Ears? Live v Electronic:

Debate the Motion

What’s On enjoys a good fight, and there are few more contentious

topics to fight about than music, especially electronic music. Love it or hate it, the arrival of electronic music

changed the musical world forever, and technology keeps it evolving and progressing. Can live music

compete? Is it better? We let two top performers from different ends of the

musical spectrum fight it out.

Bach’s Rediscovered Bach’s Rediscovered ArchiveArchiveConcert of classical music by the Kyiv Soloists classical mu-sic ensembleMaster Klass Cultural Centre (Lavrska 16)28 May at 19.00Bach’s Archive is a selection of more than 5 000 scores by Bach and his sons, as well as other European composers of the 17th and 18th centuries. For many years, the archive was thought to be lost, whereas it had been brought to Kyiv from Berlin by Soviet soldiers in 1945. In 1990, this slice of musical heri-tage was returned to Germany, but copies remained in Kyiv and it is with the aid of these that the modern ensemble is able to reproduce the authentic sound of Bach’s music. The Master Klass Cultural Centre, together with the Kyiv Soloists ensemble, presents a unique concert of the unknown works of famous Eu-ropean composers. Don’t miss your chance!Tickets are 50hrv. A Welcome RoachA Welcome RoachPapa Roach (US, nu-metal, Alta Expo Centre (Moskovskiy 11a)29 June at 20:00Calling themselves “a band that tries to walk that line be-tween metal, hardcore, punk rock and pop music”, the pride of Vacaville, California is bring-ing its Raid the Nation tour to Kyiv and, if the chatter on the group’s website is anything to go by, Kyivites will be turning out in droves. And why not? Papa Roach exploded onto the music scene in 1999 with the major-label debut album In-fest, going on to endless touring and two more albums, Loveha-tetragedy and Dancing in the Ashes, which attained gold and platinum status, respectively. While frontman Jacoby Shad-dix maintains that the rapping that featured on many of their earlier works is now out, form suggests that they’ve kept more than enough other sounds in to grab you.Tickets are 400-800 hrv.

The group’s over-whelming popularity in the Baltic States and other Eastern Euro-pean countries has allowed them not only to score platinum-album status in a number of those countries, but also to tour with inter-national acts of great renown, such as the Rolling Stones, R.E.M., Depeche Mode and Supergrass. It looks as though this summer Kyiv is in for an embarrassment of rock riches.Tickets are 250-400hrv. For more information call 222-8040.

CanariasCanariasExhibition of paintings and photographic works by Rufina Santana and Poldo SebrianM17 (Antonovycha 102-104) From 29 JuneRufina Santana and Poldo Sebrian were so taken with the beauty of the Canary Islands that they created a selection of their memories of this divine place. Rufina’s canvases are replete with the colours of the Canary Islands: yellow for hot sand, red for the sun, deep blue for the sea. Sebrian’s photos are, on the contrary, black-and-white, revealing the grandeur and pure beauty of the sur-rounding environment. As a result, the exhibition presents a landscape of the islands hid-den from the tourist invasion; an image of spiritual unity with nature. For more information call: 596-2030

Heading to the Heading to the East SideEast SideMoby (US, ambient, electronica), Palace Sport (Sportyvna Pl 1)10 June at 19.00Born in Harlem in 1965, Rich-ard Melville Hall always had an ear for music. Learning classi-cal guitar at the age of nine, he went to master piano and drums not long after. Signed to Instinct Records in 1989, his first big breakthrough was the progres-sive house track, Go, that in-cluded the string line from the hit TV series, Twin Peaks. With a new album due out in May of this year, fans should be well versed in both the old and new for his concert this summer. It’s going to be hot – get in on it!Tickets TBA. No PitNo PitPendulum (Australia/UK, drum ‘n’ bass). Stereo Plaza (Kikvidze 17)15 June at 21.00The Australo-British sextet, founded in 2002, takes the genre to another level, never fearing to augment traditional d ‘n’ b lines with heavy guitar riffs and unique vocal styl-ings. Achieving an immediate hit with their debut single An-other Planet, Pendulum scored a landmark success when their debut album Hold Your Colour became the biggest-selling drum ‘n’ bass record of all time. Their next, In Silico, broke yet more new ground, in that it was recorded “live in studio” and featured grinding metal riffs, bringing in yet more rock fans in search of a new sound. Pendu-lum comes to Kyiv on the back of their latest release, Immer-sion, which pushes the band’s creative envelope as far as el-ements of death-metal. This gig should see fans of various genres coming together to pay tribute to truly fearless creativ-ity. And they’ll groove too, so it sounds like a superb deal.Tickets are 300-500hrv. For more information call 222-8040

German GrooveGerman GrooveSchiller Live in Surround Sound (Germany, new age, ambient, trance, electro) Stereo Plaza (Kikvidze 17)4 June at 21.00New venue Stereo Plaza is certainly not skimping when it comes to bringing top-line talent to Kyiv this summer. Following up Joachim Garraud and Brainstorm, Stereo Plaza proudly presents the hugely popular German group Schiller. The pet project of musician, com-poser and producer Christopher von Deylen, Schiller distinguishes itself from many other electronic acts with its unique atmospherics and embrace of technology to create new soundscapes. In Kyiv, this innovative approach will be at the forefront, as the group takes advantage of three-dimensional surround sound to create a swirl-ing effect, making it seems as though the music has taken on form and moves among the audience.Tickets are 250-400hrv. For more information call 222-8040.

SymphonicitySymphonicitySting (pop), Palace Sport (Sportyvna Pl. 1)7 July at 19.00Sting is a singer who doesn’t need any introduction. And it’s set to be a very special show, because this tour is all about his new sym-phonic programme. For the Kyiv show he’ll be teaming up with the National Symphony Or-chestra of Ukraine, conducted by his own special Sarah Hicks. This is going to be something truly special. Tickets are 550-7900hrv. The Dirt: There are rumors that Alice and Ksy-usha are active clubbers, disparaging glamorous lifestyles just to show off in front of their friends. The Plea: Well, we honestly hate loud parties and large gatherings of people. So clubs are simply not for us and are not a way to show off in front of our friends. What we really like to do is spend time outside, in harmony with nature. The Dirt: People say that you are great fans of Zhana Aguzarova and sometimes lift melodies from her songs. The Plea: Of course, we are great fans of hers! She has the most soul-destroying and memora-ble voice on the planet. We listened to her songs instead of lullabies as children. So, seriously – no, we don’t steal anyone’s tunes. We do every-thing ourselves. The Dirt: Some say that you are not sisters, but lovers. The Plea: Well, we really do love each other, but it’s a sibling love, because we are real sisters. Still, thanks a lot to those who are adding spice to our image. The Dirt: Alice is said to be dating video blog-ger Roman Zhelud and Valentin Strykalo at the same time. The Plea: That’s absolute nonsense. We are just good friends and colleagues and that’s it. It’s funny what people come up with to make their stories more interesting for their readers.

The court is in session. Kamon!!! defends their identityContinuing our investigation of rumours and gossip about Ukrainian celebrities, we invited the band Kamon!!! to defend themselves and sort the truth from the fiction. Scandalous anti-glam singers Alice and Ksyusha were glad to come and take sweet revenge for all the dirt they hear about themselves.

A couple of years ago, Kamon!!! ap-peared out of nowhere in Ukraine, featuring two pretty girls claiming to be sisters with a very strange second

name – Kosmos (“space” in English). Those who thought it would be just another pop project, with two chicks singing about love, money and clubbing, were mistaken. In their fi rst video, Al-ice and Ksyusha showed their rebellious attitude towards glamorous lifestyles, making fun of peo-ple who spend too much time and money on try-ing to be the centre of attention. Still, the manner in which they did it was kind of strange, leading to rumours of drug addiction. Others said that Kamon!!! were of the same genre as Zhana Agu-zarova, a popular Soviet singer, believed to be mentally unstable (she believed she was from Mars) and who disappeared many years ago (maybe back to the planet of her birth). The Dirt: People say that you are not actually sis-ters and that Kosmos is not your real surname. The Plea: As a matter of fact, we are sisters with a fi ve-year age difference! And you are right, Kos-mos is not our real surname, but “Boy George”, “Prince” and “Madonna” are also pseudonyms!”The Dirt: There is a rumour that Kamon!!! has more members than just the two of you and that the band plays concerts in different places at the same time, disguising the vocalists under outra-geous costumes. Do you have doppelgangers?

The Plea: There are only two of us. Fortunately, our schedule is not so busy that we need other singers to represent the band. However, there were a couple of incidents when other girls claimed to be us, in order to pick up guys. Sometimes it works, because not many people know our faces without makeup. A friend of ours once happened to be at a party with a pseudo-Ksyusha in a club. The truth is that we don’t go clubbing, much less seek new boyfriends in clubs!”The Dirt: People say that you are under the infl u-ence of drugs, when you write your songs. The Plea: If caffeine is a drug, then we plead guilty. We are addicted to green tea, coffee and chocolate. If we don’t eat chocolate for a long time, the withdrawal symptoms kick in. More-over, we don’t even smoke and speak out against smoking in public places! We even dedicated one of our videos (for the song Brunette) to this sub-ject. You may have noticed that the fi ght in this video starts after one girl burns the other girl’s leopard leggings with her cigarette. The Dirt: Some say that you started singing as a way to fi nd an oligarch to marry. The Plea: First of all, music is what you fi nd in the conservatory; we are in show business. Peo-ple get into business to make money and be inde-pendent. And that is why it doesn’t make sense for us to do everything we do just to be wealthy, but dependent. This gossip is simply senseless.

The Medium Is the MessageThe Medium Is the MessagePremiere at Free Stage Theatre (Olesya Gonchara 71)21 May at 19.00The Free Stage Theatre is one of the brightest theatrical phenom-ena in Ukraine working in the fi eld of modern experimental dra-ma. This spring, their experiment goes as far as trying to trans-form theatre into contemporary art. Taking McLuhan’s phrase “The medium is the message,” the young and creative Free Stage troupe presents its allusions on the notion, expressed in the idea that, in theatre, the medium is the Actor. Interacting with each other, the actors also interact with the Audience, all of which re-sults in dense psychological drama, recalling scenes from Stop-pard’s famous play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. Be ready to see and experience something completely new! Tickets are 35 hrv. For more information call: 486-8040

For Every Muse For Every Muse Muse (UK, alt-rock), Palace Sport (Spor-tyvna Pl 1)24 May at 19.00After a short break of four years, Muse returned to the stage with a strong new album entitled, The Resistant, in autumn 2009. It topped record charts in 19 coun-tries and went on to win the Best Rock Al-bum at the Grammys that same year. They also won the Best Band award at the NME Awards, so there have been absolutely no regrets about the short time spent apart. Back for a second concert to aMUSE their fans, make sure you get your ticket just as soon as they go on sale. Tickets are 500-1100hrv. For more in-formation call 246-7406.

Musical ChemistryMusical ChemistryChemical Brothers (electric pop), Palace Sport (Sportyvna Pl 1)25 May at 19.00Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons of Chemical Brothers are giving only their second concert in Kyiv. They are planning to “wow” the Kyiv audience with their most re-cent album Further, as well as top hits and an energetic show hitherto unseen here. When this British duet was formed in 1993, the big-beat genre was still in its infancy and the Chemical Brothers are now frequently called the pioneers of big-beat and electronic music, sharing this title with other popular bands such as The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim and The Crystal Method. Tickets are 250-850hrv. For more information call 246-7406.

that God is forgiving and brings everything to a happy end.” The Little Mermaid is, of course, such a work. 125 Years of the Real ThingPODIL Walter Gordon and his team at Coca-Cola Ukraine held a big party at their new offi ces on Thursday 12 May to celebrate 125 years of this most famous of brands. It’s come a long way since it fi rst went on sale in an Atlanta pharmacy way back in 1886, and it’s enjoyed just as much in Ukraine as it is just about everywhere else in the world. Vitali Klichko was there, telling of the time he and his brother tried the drink for the fi rst time, and everyone in attendance had a fun time, especially when a Coca-Cola truck turned up fi lled with presents for all!

Evolution of artMYSTETSKIY ARSENAL On 12 May, the third FineArtUkraine Art Forum 2011 opened in Kyiv. For three years in a row, this festival of modern art has been a popular event for artistic youngsters, as well as more mature art connoisseurs, bringing the best examples of modern art to the capital of Ukraine. Not only can Ukrainian galleries show what they’ve got prepared for visitors, but FineArtUkraine also helps to establish relations with the art world abroad, looking to bring ever more European art to Ukraine.

Only Art and Nothing MoreNATIONAL ART MUSEUM A little shocking at fi rst sight, this exhibition of art from Ukraine’s top artists took place on 12 May. A simple vision of the modern world concealed with colours on a canvas was the main idea underlying this project, appropriately entitled Prosto.Art or Just Art. More then 70 works were presented during the exhibition and many sold during the charity auction. All funds collected in the course of the project will go to social programs at the Centre of Modern Art.
