• A librarian assistant at the Oaklyn Library, MONICA
ROTTLER quickly answered, “Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë ...
it’s a great romance-mystery.”
• Haddon Heights resident RON GUTSMUTH replied, “I’m a Christian so my favorite book is The Bible.” One of What’s On’s biggest fans, Ron has seldom missed an issue since the NewsCalendar’s debut in 1991.
• Haddonfield resident LAURA DeCENCIO was found enjoying an afternoon at Haddon Township’s Newton Lake Park with her daughters, CLAIRE (8) and GENEVIEVE (6). Laura’s favorite book is The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. “I loved the storytelling and I thought the book was written really well,” she said. Claire enjoys reading Ron Roy’s A to Z Mysteries, while Genevieve always jumps at the chance to read I Love You Cat.
• Owner of Collingswood’s Arts Plus Gallery, SAM CARUSO
relished the The Pelican Brief by John Grisham. “I had a great
time reading it on vacation,” he
revealed. His sons, SABASTIANO (6) and FRANCESCO,
(4) read each night. One of Sebastiano’s
favorite books is Biggest, Strongest,
Fastest by Steve Jenkins. Francesco
loves What DoYou Do with a Tail
Like This? by Steve Jenkins and Robin
Page.
• KATHY OSTBURG, Audubon’s Library Administer, replied, “I have many favorites, one of them is The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd.” The library’s MARYANN
TOPHAM enjoyed reading The Mitford Series by Jan Karon.
• Manager of Oaklyn’s 7-Eleven, OMAR ALI is a fan of
Shakespeare. “My favorite book is Hamlet ... I read it in high
school.”

So, we have two sites that are deemed “worthyofseriousseriousconsideration,”but only one has been studied in detail. Building an addition in front of the Public Library building would be a huge mistake, for many reasons. The Commissioners and the community need not make such a mistake, because an alternative site for a new library is available. In a report dated June 2010, a blue-ribbon committee concluded that the Allen Avenue Parking Lot is “worthy of serious consideration.” We, the undersigned residents of Haddonfield, hereby petition the Commissioners – before deciding to renovate the existing building and erect an addition in front of it – (a) to order an independent, detailed investigation and evaluation of the Allen Avenue site and (b) to commission the preparation of conceptual plans, with estimated costs, for at least two building configurations on that site.
