Devils Elbow “Golden Flame” EP Release @ Common Room Golden Flame is the 2nd official single (not including radio singles 'A Little More' & 'Gravediggers Union’) taken from the bands late-2013 album Absolute Domain. The album was mixed by UK-born freelance engineer Nick Poortman most recently having worked with Shihad. “The song’s about breaking free from the grinding wheel of the evil slave masters to find a place in the sun, & have a few beers” says singer/songwriter/guitarist Alec Withers "Glimmers of country twang thread effortlessly between rockabilly throwdowns, murder ballads, classic rock oeuvres, and a ton of bluesy grit" - Stack "Gritty southern garage rock, spliced with country soul and spirit, with a dash of pop sensibility over thick, juicy and honest tones" - NZ Musician Absolute Domain is available in all good record stores & worldwide online the internets. The Common Room, 227 Heretaunga St East, Hastings 8.00pm R18: $10.00 per adult (door sales)

Brodsky Quartet The Brodsky Quartet’s spirited & virtuosic artistry has ensured them a place at the very forefront of the international chamber music scene. Bringing a taste of their home country, they will be performing works by Purcell & Britten, alongside some of the greatest string quartets of all time. Be drawn into their passionate exploration of the monumental late Beethoven quartet: Opus 131, considered an emotional marathon. “We have chosen two little-known English gems. Purcell's Chaconne, arranged by Benjamin Britten & the inspiration behind his own Chacony from the 2nd Quartet, is a study in simplicity & purity of texture, yet contains harmonies & dissonance belying its age. Britten's Poème, a soaring conversation between 3 players over a pulsating 2nd violin pedal, is part of an early classically-based quartet, written when the composer was only 13: this movement alone sees into the future of Britten's unique language.” - Brodsky Quartet. Since their formation in 1972, the Brodsky Quartet have given over 3000 concerts & released more than 60 recordings. Sharing their energy & craftsmanship with the next generation, they are currently International Fellows of Chamber Music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Programme: Purcell|Chaconne in G minor , Britten|Poème, Bartók|String Quartet No 5 , Beethoven|String Quartet No 14 in C# minor Op 131 Pre-Concert Talk in Napier: The pre-concert talk is free to attend & takes place at the venue 60 mins prior to the concert. The talk will be run by a local music specialist & provides a great opportunity to learn more about the artists & the music, before experiencing it live. The Secret Life of Aprons Hear this inspirational woman speak about her passion, remembering a bygone era. Part of the stunning “With Bold Needle & Thread” exhibition showcasing the collection of vintage needlecraft “rescuer” Rosemary McLeod, is an apron lovingly embroidered in the 1930s yet probably never worn. The apron is one of a group of 12 embroidered by the same maker. Some were never completed after the embroidery was done, says Rosemary, who bought them as a lot from a dealer at an auction in Auckland. The apron pictured reflects the popularity of fancy dress parties for adults in the 20s & 30s, and themes of the exotic in movies & romantic fiction at a time when few NZers could afford to travel overseas. Perhaps best known as a columnist & commentator, Wellington-based McLeod describes herself as a “rescuer” of vintage needlecraft, from tea towels to toys, doilies to dollies, rag rugs to aprons. McLeod's first textile history book, Thrift to Fantasy, won the history category of the NZ book awards in 2005. Some work in this exhibition was made by her for her 2nd book, With Bold Needle & Thread, which includes vintage projects to make today. Produced using more than 500 hours of remarkable & fully colourised archive footage, much of it previously unseen, the series Apocalypse WWI takes a strategic & global approach to address these fundamental questions. Most importantly, it tells the story with a sensitive, intimate approach on a human level. It’s the end of the school year. The long-awaited holidays have finally arrived. Nicholas, his parents & his grandma hit the road & head to the seaside. There’s George, who talks funny because he’s English, Paul the constant crybaby & Christopher, who always wants to be right & is really, really annoying. Nicholas also gets to know Elizabeth, a little girl who follows him everywhere, wide-eyed. “How sweet, those two. I hear wedding bells in the future,” laugh the grown-ups. Nicholas panics! Luckily his pals are there to help him… & to cause trouble. Between the beach, the hotel & the forest, with his friends, his family, the beach attendant & the swimming coach, Nicholas is really going to enjoy a holiday to remember… 5.30pm: My Summer in Provence – A light family drama set in the south of France, starring much-loved French actor Jean Reno. Léa, Adrien & their little brother Théo, who was born deaf, travel to Provence for their holidays to stay with their grandfather Paul, an olive-grower they have never met due to a family quarrel many years earlier. Bella Kalolo If you’re not acquainted with Bella Kalolo, then you’ve not experienced NZ soul at its finest! This Samoan, Tongan & Maori (Ngati Porou) singer songwriter has been handpicked to work with artists as diverse as Fat Freddy’s Drop, Hollie Smith, Don McGlashan, Dave Dobbyn, Nathan Haines, Aaradhna, & the NZ Symphony Orchestra, to name just a few. Bella's reputation as one of NZ’s most entertaining performers has earned her spots at Glastonbury, the City of London Festival, Diva's in Paradise, & closer to home, the 2014 Sydney Music Festival where she sang with the legendary Chaka Khan. Aptly titled Bella’s Soul Sessions, the national acoustic tour is unlike anything Bella has ever done before. Alliance Française French Film Festival Today’s Movies: 10.30am: Grand Illusions – Legendary film director Orson Welles once said, “If I had to save only 1 film in the world, it would be Grand Illusion.” Praised as one of the greatest films ever made, Grand Illusion is “an artistically masterful feature,” a brilliant hymn to fraternity & pacifism directed by the cult filmmaker Jean Renoir (The Rules of the Game), starring the influential Jean Gabin & Pierre Fresnay as French soldiers held in a World War I German prison camp, & Erich von Stroheim as the unforgettable Captain von Rauffenstein. Several escape attempts follow until the 2 soldiers are sent to a seemingly impenetrable fortress from which escape seems impossible 2.15pm: May Allah Bless France - Celebrated French rapper & author Abd Al Malik makes his directorial debut with an adaptation of his 2004 autobiography of the same name, which chronicles his rise from the underprivileged streets of Strasbourg through love, education & music. With Bold Needle & Thread (until 29 Mar) Perhaps best known as a columnist & commentator, Wellington-based Rosemary McLeod is also an avid collector. Or as she calls herself a "rescuer" - she rescues vintage needlecraft from tea towels to toys, doilies to dollies, from op shops, Trade Me & the hands of friends who know of her passion. Because not only does she rescue the items but also covets these wonderful pieces of a by-gone era domestic craft. Ranging from 1920 - 1960, when so many objects were lovingly made at home, this exhibition showcases a wide range of objects from Rosemary's personal collection. It's also a story about collecting & as well as that, as to how objects were made & decorated. Many of the works are supported with the original patterns & stories behind how Rosemary sourced them. MTG Hawkes Bay, 1 Tennyson St, Napier 10.00am – 6.00pm $10.00 per adult, $7.50 per student with ID, Free per child

Inside Out (until 28 Mar) Christine Parnell, Jill Fitzmaurice & Gail Davidson show an eclectic exhibition or watercolour, acrylics & humour! 'Our title expresses the concept that successful art has to be felt internally before it becomes an interpretation on the canvas. An idea may spend much time in contemplation before it becomes something that is tangible. It also expresses the fact that an artwork may sit in privacy (on the artist’s wall, in a ward...) Hastings Community Arts Centre, Russell St South, Hastings 10.00am – 4.00pm

Pulse of a Nation (until 28 Mar) Sybil says 'I started to explore the AA maps I have acquired over the last 40yrs. As a consequence I have used as the starting point, some of these maps of places I have visited or lived in, & which have had an impact on me. I have carved the arterial routes or roads of major cities or smaller towns into the supports & from arranging these maps artistically, 21 paintings have been born. The carved roads symbolise making a mark on the landscape & refer to the importance that these roads play in connecting the places to each other either directly or indirectly. The arterial routes (roads) are coloured red like blood, which biologically flows through arteries creating a pulse & making the heart beat. Hence the PULSE (lifeblood) of a Nation. Community Arts Centre, Russell St South, Hastings 10.00am – 4.00pm
