Durham Archaeology Explorers

Oriental Museum

Children aged 7 - 11 years are invited to join Durham University Museums’ Archaeology Club. The group meets on the first Saturday of the month from 2pm - 4pm at the Oriental Museum. Through exciting hands-on experiments and activities, the club investigates all aspects of archaeology and explores Durham’s own archaeological secrets.

WATCH

Botanic Garden

WATCH is a wildlife and environmental club for youngsters and their families. Activities are aimed at children from 5 years and upwards. The group meets on the second Saturday of each month (excluding August) from 10am - 12noon.

Little Dragons

Oriental Museum

Little Dragon’s Club is the Oriental Museum’s group for under 5s, their parents and carers. Come along every Wednesday between 10am - 11am for fun crafts, messy play, object handling, stories and role playing.

New Permanent Galleries

HIMALAYAS, SOUTH ASIA AND SOUTH EAST ASIA

A new permanent gallery highlighting the Oriental Museum’s rich collections from Tibet, Nepal, India, Cambodia, Burma, Thailand, Vietnam and other countries of this vast and diverse region. From delicate Mughal jades to Tibetan prayer wheels, headhunting swords to temple carvings, this gallery offers a glimpse of everyday lives and extraordinary art.

LIVING ON THE HILLS - 10,000 YEARS OF DURHAM A new permanent gallery exploring the lives of the people who have lived in, and visited, County Durham over the past 10,000 years. The new home for Durham University’s Museum of Archaeology, this family friendly gallery looks at the daily lives of those who lived in and visited County Durham through the art, architecture and everyday objects they have left behind.

Temporary Exhibitions

BOOKS FOR BOYS: HEROISM, ADVENTURE & EMPIRE AT THE DAWN OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR Exploring boyhood in Britain and Germany during the earliest years of the twentieth century. From The Jungle Book and The Wind in the Willows to tales of real-life heroes, adventure stories and early spy novels.

BOUND TO LAST: BOOK BINDING FROM THE MIDDLE AGES TO THE MODERN DAY Explore the history of bookbinding through a range of incredible books. At the centre will be the St Cuthbert Gospel, the oldest book in Western Europe to survive in its original binding.

FROM THE MOUNTAINS TO THE SEA The Oriental Museum has over 2000 pieces in its South Asian collection. Workshops with local art collective East Durham Artists’ Network have resulted in works that fuse local perspectives with South Asian culture.

THE ART STUDIO: NO STIGMA ATTACHED Sunderland-based mental health organisation, the Art studio, provides support to improve the lives of members through art. Members have created work that reflects both the museum’s collections and their own personal journeys and experiences.

VIETNAM: A NATION, NOT A WAR This exhibition mixes historic and contemporary objects from Vietnam with contemporary works by British artist, Anthony Key, to explore national identity, migration, cultural diversity, faith and belonging in Vietnam.

ON SEEING THE AUTHOR: PORTRAITS IN LIBRARIES FROM ANTIQUITY TO THE PRESENT Explore the fascinating history of portraits in libraries, including Palace Green Library’s own Bishop Cosin’s Library (1669) and come face to face with classical poets and other notable writers.

WORLD HERITAGE SITE VISITOR CENTREThe World Heritage Site Visitor Centre, on Owengate Palace Green, enhances the experience of visitors to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Durham Cathedral and Castle. The Visitor Centre provides visitors with an overview of what a World Heritage Site is, what makes Durham significant, and what there is to see and do on the peninsula.

The Visitor Centre also provides a central point of information about places to visit on the World Heritage Site including the Castle and the Cathedral with its Claustral Buildings housing the Treasures of St Cuthbert. The Centre also complements the work of Durham University Palace Green Library on the opposite side of the green.

Like the rest of the World Heritage Site, the Visitor Centre provides interactive experiences for visitors including exhibitions, performances and hands-on family activities.
