PROFILE

Brisbane Powerhouse presents two international, multi-media performances in the coming months, which will have audiences buzzing. Hakanaï, 16-18 August, is a mesmerising performance weaving together digital technology, visual arts and dance. From French company, Adrien M & Claire B, experience their Australian debut. Mixing reality and virtuality, Hakanaï is an energetic performance connecting light, music and the body, with live animations based on physical movement modelling and an original music score. On Fri 17 August, American guitar prodigy, Kaki King demonstrates her insatiable imagination and amazing musicality in a multi-media performance using projection mapping and live guitar. The projections illuminate and harmonise with King’s mesmerising melodies and on-stage energy. This is Kaki King at her visionary best.

CinderellaQueensland Ballet7–15 SeptemberLyric TheatreQPACqueenslandballet.com.auLove triumphs with a sprinkling of fairy magic. Dancing with a handsome Prince, wearing a glittering gown in a candlelit ballroom — such fanciful dreams were only in Cinderella’s imagination. Until the day her life of hardship is magically transformed by her Fairy Godmother! Making a dazzling entrance to the royal ball, she captures the attention of all and the heart of the Prince. Yet her beautiful dream must end

at midnight, and in her haste to depart, she leaves one jewelled slipper behind… Charming, humorous and blissfully romantic, Ben Stevenson’s acclaimed production of Cinderella is perfect fairy-tale entertainment for everyone.

StoryologyThe Walkley Foundation27–28 July 2018 Palace Cinemas the Barracks walkleys.com/storyologyStoryology, the Walkley Foundation’s journalism festival, takes Australians behind the headlines to reveal what great journalism looks like, how it’s made, and why – more than ever – we need it. A series of public panels will showcase the high-profile reporters, editors, photographers and media-makers who help to bring the truth to light, from Mark Schoofs (BuzzFeed US) to Lenore Taylor (Guardian Australia).

The program kicks off on Friday with the evening panel, “This book changed my life” with speakers Trent Dalton, Peter Greste and Melissa Lucashenko. Saturday sessions include “Saturday morning with the papers”, “Power shifts: Identity, diversity, #MeToo”, “Shooting the storm” and “Killer stories: True crime & podcasts”. Storyology is where you’ll find out why journalists cover the stories they do, the way they do. Tickets for individual sessions start at $30, with discounts for students, MEAA members and concessions. You can also save big when you buy a full Saturday pass.

Lifestyle: a sunshine state of mindOpen daily until21 October 2018Free exhibitionState Library of Queensland lifestyle.slq.qld.gov.au #SLQlifestyleShowcasing a range of State Library of Queensland’s rare and restricted collection items, the exhibition Lifestyle: a sunshine state of mind explores how Queenslanders have pursued meaningful and rewarding lives since the late 1800s. Participatory and thought-

provoking, it explores the myriad of ideas and identities that are quintessentially Queensland. Lifestyle delves into the quirks of the Queensland sensibility through the themes of wellbeing, home, expression, play, community and hope. The exhibition features a mesmerising collection of curios and heritage items including original artworks from Queensland’s early expressionist painters, quirky tourism posters from the 1950s, and vast collections of early home movies. Lifestyle: a sunshine state of mind takes the concept of lifestyle and the context of Queensland, and draws them together to present an interactive,

participatory exhibition against a unique sunshine state backdrop. In the process, it aims to challenge stereotypes, provoke thought and engagement, and shape ideas and stories about what the future of Queensland lifestyle might hold.

Lysa and the Freeborn DamesBy Claire Christian Presented by La Boite and QUT Creative Industries 21 July–11 Aug 2018 World Premiere laboite.com.auGirls, glitter and gender politics with a cracking soundtrack.Lysa King is nineteen and angry. She has come home after a year away, where she has seen revolution happen everywhere in the wake of the Women’s Marches – everywhere but home.

Lysa takes matters into her own hands by staging an epic protest on the biggest night of the year…except only three of her friends and a plucky young policeman show up. This wasn’t exactly what she had in mind. Hours later, trapped in the local football club, Lysa is faced with a difficult decision – will she dig her heels in for the sake of change, even if it burns every bridge she’s ever walked? Led by a fierce chorus of senior women, this fury fuelled dramedy centres on a young woman who’s on the cusp of her political awakening, grappling

with the significance of legacy and self-empowerment in the face of adversity. Inspired by Aristophanes’ Greek classic Lysistrata, award-winning Queensland writer Claire Christian (Beautiful Mess) lands us in the present with a hilarious and glitter-filled response to the power of women globally.

Tickets from: $30, visit laboite.com.au for further information.
