Hailed as one of the best music line-ups to come to Cardiff, we’re immensely proud of the success of our inaugural Festival of Voice in June. It was an exciting first for us here at the Centre and an important milestone in our commitment to bring the best of the world to Wales. If you attended one of the 100 world-class festival events across the city, thank you for your support.

This year, Cardiff celebrates one of its most famous sons, Roald Dahl, and of course, we’re at the heart of the festivities. From August to January, we’ll be giving a new home to The Wondercrump World of Roald Dahl (pg. 6-7), an interactive journey through the extraordinary life of the beloved writer. On 17 and 18 September, you can see the city through the storyteller’s eyes in Roald Dahl’s City of the Unexpected (pg. 8-9). We’re keeping the exciting details under our hat, behind our back and in our granny’s tightly zipped handbag; you’ll have to be there to see the weird and wonderful happenings we have planned! As well as all that, we’re delighted to be co-creating a unique take on Roald Dahl’s short stories for adults, Wonderman (pg. 36-37), and we’ll also be welcoming Ballet Cymru’s performance of Roald Dahl’s Little Red Riding Hood and the Three Little Pigs (pg.35). A gloriumptious season!

A celebration of Nelson Mandela through music and song.

If think you know Nelson Mandela – think again. In this colourful celebration of the man who touched the hearts and minds of people around the world, the amazing life of Nelson Mandela is brought vividly to the stage by Cape Town Opera.

Performed by a company of over 60 South African performers, this moving show charts the uplifting story of Mandela’s transformation from freedom fi ghter to president.

The upbeat jazz and swing-infl uenced songs of Sophiatown in the central section of the piece are framed on either side by musical styles more familiar in contemporary opera - with a dash of authentic Xhosa folk music that grounds the production in its African roots.

From tribal initiation rites on the banks of the Mbashe River, through the heady and rebellious jazz-fuelled days in Sophiatown, to incarceration and refl ection on Robben Island and fi nally beyond, to freedom - this is the story of one of the world’s most iconic fi gures.

After a fi ve year absence from the UK, the irresistible dancers of Alvin Ailey are back with a dazzling array of offerings.

Under the leadership of Artistic Director Robert Battle, Ailey continues to wow audiences and critics around the world with an all-star line-up of new works by some of today’s most acclaimed choreographers, as well as Ailey classics.

Following their hugely successful visit to the Centre in 2010, this autumn’s repertoire includes the celebrated Ronald K. Aberfan

On the morning of 21 October 1966, 116 children and 28 adults lost their lives following the catastrophic collapse of a colliery waste tip above the primary school in Aberfan.

Aberfan is a concert commemorating 50 years since the disaster: remembering those who lost their lives, reflecting on the courage of the survivors and the bereaved and celebrating the spirit with which the community has faced the future.

Featuring S4C’s specially commissioned piece, Cantata memoria by Karl Jenkins with libretto by Welsh poet Mererid Hopwood, some of Wales’ most celebrated artists will appear including harpist Catrin Finch, brass specialist David Childs, soprano Elin Manahan Thomas and world-renowned bass-baritone Bryn Terfel. The evening will also feature new written work, along with special community performances given by The Ynysowen Male Choir and school choirs from Ynysowen Community Primary School and Ysgol Rhyd y Grug.

12 & 13 October 2016Does friendship endure more than love? Will it ground you? Can it help you escape your reality? On roller-skates and in the air, two women revisit the interweaving stories of their past lives and loves - from the post-war optimism of the late 1940s to the domestic realities of the 1950s and beyond.

Bella Kinetica’s new circus theatre show has physical feats that will take your breath away as they skate, spin and fly across the stage.

Fabulous music from the 1940s and 1950s is woven throughout the piece and will get you tapping your feet; recorded memories of real women’s experiences bring history to life before your eyes.

The show is performed entirely on roller-skates, giving the characters an opportunity to physically represent the metaphors of their lives - spinning circles round each other, rolling in and out of each other’s lives and sometimes lifting into the air.

Two clowns trapped in a cardboard world… Dik and Adam are clowns. They couldn’t fight their way out of a paper bag, let alone a surreal cardboard world. Why are they there? And what are they supposed to be doing?

She starts to question her values and the happiness she thought she had found in Brittany with her partner Loeiza. All of a sudden, she has never felt so far from West Wales.

But can a friendly neighbour, who brings a strange gift to her door, calm her troubled mind?

A new, contemporary and multilingual play that explores the close relationship between Wales and Brittany, the eternal dilemma of the immigrant and some of the issues facing young people today in rural communities across Europe.

Ludovico Einaudi has quietly become one of the most successful musicians in the world. His hauntingly beautiful and evocative music tops the charts in the UK and Europe, and he was BAFTA-nominated for his score of This is England ’86.

His music has been described as minimalist, alt-classical, ambient and contemporary, but it defies easy classification. He sums it up best: “There is something in it that comes from classical, but I have influences from different music I have experienced in my life, from African music to folk and rock.”

23 – 25 March 2017This epic solo production tells the story of Philippe, a man coping with the recent loss of his mother, the estrangement of his younger brother André and the mysterious teachings of the universe. Looking to the stars, time and place are secondary to Philippe’s search for meaning in the universe and his place in it. The competition between the Soviets and Americans during the space race, the SETI programme (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) and childhood memories act as touchstones for this one-man show dealing with the fundamental question, “Are we alone?”.

Receiving tickets by post

On request, tickets can be posted to a UK address via 2nd Class standard post. Booking must be made at least nine days before the performance.

Refunds and Exchanges

With the exception of cancelled events, we will not refund tickets. Subject to availability and at our discretion, we may exchange tickets for another performance of the same production up to 24 hours before the performance for which the tickets were originally purchased. Ticket Re-sales

Reductions

Only one reduction applies per ticket. Please let us know if you are eligible for one when booking as reductions cannot be applied once processed. Reduction and concession tickets are subject to allocations and availability.

Patrons with Disabilities

We are a member of Hynt, the national access scheme. Hynt cardholders are entitled to a ticket free of charge for a personal assistant or carer. Our previous Access Scheme ended on 1 September 2015. Please visit hynt.co.uk or wmc.org.uk/access for information.

Infants and Under 16s

Everyone under 16 years of age needs a valid ticket to see events in our theatres and must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or other adult over the age of 18. Those aged 2 – 16 are eligible for under 16s ticket reductions where available. Children under 2 are welcome at family performances but will require a £2 baby ticket. Some events are not suitable for all age groups.
