director’s welcome Anarchy Rock & Ink celebrates the potency of great hand-made prints. The political, anarchic street posters from New York’s Black Cat Studio still hum with the energy and passion that inspired that generation of artist-activists. Meanwhile the superb, strangely elegant band posters from Melbourne’s international studio Beyond The Pale highlight the appeal of hand-made prints in a slick digital world.

Print is again in the spotlight with the return of FAC Print Award 2013 supported by Little Creatures Brewing, Australia’s premier print award.

In the exhibition 33 FAC reunites with Martumili Artists to present paintings from three major Martu artists, Nora Wompi, Bugai Whyoulter and Nora Nungabar.

In our booming Learning Program the Jewellery and Print Studios have both been shifted into larger and better spaces so we can continue to provide excellent facilities for all our students.

I trust we will see you soon at Fremantle Arts Centre.

This winter we present a potent selection of print and poster-making in all its forms under the banner Anarchy, Rock & Ink. Powerful political posters from New York collective Black Cat, lush and intricate rock posters from St Kilda design studio Beyond The Pale and hand-etched prints by WA’s Rachel Salmon-Lomas will fill our galleries from 27 July – 15 September.

This powerful collection of political street posters from Black Cat/ Gato Negro - a collaborative of artists, anarchists and activists formed in New York in 1978 - still hums with the energy and passion of the protest movements that created them.

A project by Bob Cooney, an original member of the collective, the exhibition gives an evocative insight into the streets of New York and many of the struggles of its communities.

A Sydney-based print maker, performance artist and socially-engaged provocateur, Cooney lived in NYC from 1977-1997. A selection of Cooney's films and a video of dialogue with the artist produced by Tim Burns will be shown alongside the posters. Other collaborators of the Black Cat included Caz Porter, Jorge Mendez Mendez, Carol Skelsky, Philipe Bordaz, Janet Pivenstein, Omowale Clay, Jackie Bernard, Frank Morales, Seth Tobocman, Tom Otterness, Jay Johnson and Los Companeros of the Young Lords.

St Kilda-based design studio Beyond The Pale create rock posters for some of the world’s biggest bands including The Rolling Stones, The Black Keys, Pearl Jam, Beastie Boys, Arctic Monkeys and Foo Fighters. This expansive exhibition puts a focus on the intricacy, detail and rock 'n' roll decadence of these highly desirable posters and the talented artists who create them.

Today's poster artists combine the expressive freedom pioneered in the poster revolution of '60s with the do-it-yourself approach and attitude of the punk scene, creating an unprecedented surge of innovative poster production on an international scale.

Formed by John Harris in 1996 , Beyond The Pale have an established team of Australian artists who create highly collectible, high-end contemporary designs which are printed using age-old handmade silkscreen techniques.

For 18 years Riley the cow has been a central motif of Perth artist Rachel Salmon-Lomas’ work. A potent character, Riley features in hundreds upon hundreds of Salmon-Lomas’ etched prints.

This exhibition presents the complete works of Riley for the first time and invites visitors into a darkened gallery (hand-held torches are provided) to explore these evocative prints.

For the past 16 years Salmon-Lomas has also been deeply involved in Perth’s dance music scene as a DJ and radio presenter at RTRFM - under the moniker of Rok Riley. Salmon-Lomas is a printmaker who teaches Printmedia at Curtin university.

Take 12 is a series of short videos written and performed by young people inspired by twelve contemporary artworks from the City of Fremantle Art Collection.

From 23 minds came 12 profoundly different stories. These snappy, spoofy and slickly produced digital works were made in collaboration with a creative team lead by WA artist Poppy van Oorde-Grainger, local film maker Aaron McCann and Blue Forest Media.

Community project partners include Disability in the Arts, Disadvantage in the Arts WA, Hamilton Senior High School and John Curtin College of the Arts. This project was funded by a Department of Culture & the Arts Connect Community Collections Grant and City of Fremantle.

Gemma O'Brien (NSW) is an acclaimed designer and artist specialising in hand-lettering, typography and illustration. Over the past four years her lettering work clients have included Woolworths, The New York Times, Vodafone, SBS, Smirnoff, Canon and Taronga Zoo.

Exploring the performative nature of the written word, O'Brien will write directly onto the surfaces of the gallery walls to explore how the physicality of lettering itself can transform the meaning and experience of the words.

As the handwritten word becomes increasingly sparse in the digital age, the craft of lettering is deviating away from the traditional context of graphic design and into an art form in itself. O’Brien’s installation will immerse the viewer in the beauty of this skillful, intricate artform.

The annual Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award supported by Little Creatures Brewing is Australia’s premier printmaking award and presents a showcase of Australia’s finest prints and artists’ books.

Returning for its 38th year, this award and exhibition reflects the state of printmaking in contemporary Australian art practice. Emerging and established artists submit some 300 entries a year with around 50 of the best entries exhibited.

Join us for the announcement of the winners and prize presentations at the opening.

$15,000 Acquisitive Prize with work selected for the City of Fremantle Art Collection, WA’s largest municipal collection.

$5,000 Non-Acquisitive Prize.

33 shares the work of three women from Kunawarritji (Canning Stock Route Well 33) - Nora Wompi, Bugai Whyoulter and Nora Nungabar.

The work is energetic, raw and expresses the artists' desire to celebrate their country through the creation of fantastic works of contemporary Australian art. 33 also gives a deeper insight into the artists’ practice following their participation in the highly successful exhibition We don’t need a map: a Martu experience of the Western Desert.

The exhibition coincides with Nora Wompi’s inclusion in the WA Indigenous Art Award at the Art Gallery of WA. Wompi will also be at FAC for the opening of 33.

Gleave is currently artist-in-residence with the CSIRO’s Astronomy and Space Science Division. This project sees her install orbiting theatre lights in the main gallery.

In this her first solo show, WA artist Tanya Lee’s humorous performance videos make visible the rules, protocols and politics that exist in the bunkers of suburbia.

Anne Ferran (NSW), is researching the history of Fremantle Prison with a view to make new work informed by the former prison library, chapel and the yard where prisoners used to feed what became a huge bird population. artist stUdio 1

Ben Rodin (WA) uses drawing, sculpture and video to focus on current trends in social praxis, and considers the implications of art’s role in directly shaping the ‘grand narrative’. artist stUdio 2

Josephine Wilson (WA), taking references from research and objects gathered in India, explores the poetic function of language through text and audio. artist stUdio 3

Nien Schwarz (WA), uses topographic maps of the Australasian region as a launching pad for developing a research project that explores links between remnant bush and traditional and modern land use practices, between economics and ecology, and between physical and psychological mapping. artist stUdio 5

Nina Juniper (WA), explores ideas of architectural space, the public realm and spatial history. Through the analysis of socio-architectural interactions and the materiality of architectural space, her work describes places of transit and dysfunction. artist stUdio 5

Rochelle Summerfield (NSW) will respond to FAC’s neo-gothic architecture and its history as a women’s home. Summerfield uses print and collage as her primary artistic stimulus to form grotesque female characters. artist stUdio 1

Sandy McKendrick (WA) uses video stills, drawings and found objects sourced on the beach to create artwork that investigates both the origins and cultural identity of the found materials. artist stUdio 8

Sarah Elson (WA) works on methods of re-fleshing found and cast organic elements into drawings in metal, Elson’s practice involves traditional metal-smithing techniques and drawing. artist stUdio 6

Shannon Williamson (NZ) uses human anatomy as a point of departure to compose figurative and non-figurative drawings that explore the subject of the body and its sensations. artist stUdio 7

Teelah George (WA) uses drawing as the primary means to investigate the relationship between body, object, and material. room 3

tALK bLACK - tAniA Ferrier5 Aug – 26 Aug artist stUdio 3

WA artist Tania Ferrier will be in residence as part of her TALK BLACK project throughout August, presenting 33 interviews in our video project space.

Developed through a 'go anywhere' Artsource residency in 2012, TALK BLACK is a tableau projection of interviews documented on location in the uSA which discuss the current state of politics, cultural pride, strength and endurance in the Obama Era.

Tania will be available throughout the duration of the screening to talk about the project, inviting a response from people to TALK BLACK while collecting Australian stories to be parcelled into a wall projection that will travel to the uSA for exhibition in 2015.

2013 AIPP WA Epson Professional Photographers Award is an exhibition showcasing the work of WA's most recently awarded professional photographers, including winners from the esteemed Epson 2013 Australian Institute of Professional Photographers WA Awards.

13–28 july

Freedom School is an exhibition of paintings by members of the Freedom School, a professional development studio program established by multi-award winning, internationally exhibited artist, David Giles. Freedom School includes more than 50 WA artists.

3–18 august

Walkajurra Walkabout – Walking for Country Arts Exhibition is a unique exhibition presenting the work of fifty Indigenous and non-Indigenous activists who took part in Walkajurra Walkabout, an anti-uranium march from Yeelirree to Leonora earlier this year. The exhibition, which includes, painting, photography, sculpture and textiles seeks to promote the message of caring for our country and raise funds through the sale of the art to promote the cause.

Fremantle International Portrait Prize 2013 promotes excellence in portrait photography. Sixty images will be shortlisted for the final judging and exhibition. Funds raised go to Arthritis and Osteoporosis Western Australia.

The Moores Building Contemporary Art Gallery is a City of Fremantle subsidised art facility that promotes a wide range of contemporary art by providing low-cost gallery and project spaces in Fremantle's historic West End.

If you are unable to attend, notice must be given five days before the course commences to receive a credit note, less 20% administration fee, redeemable within 12 months.

If a class is cancelled by FAC due to lack of participants FAC will refund your money in full.
