House Arts festival, Saturday 26th January, 7.30pmMorris Theatre

The performing arts take centre stage as Houses compete against each other in a lighthearted and fun filled event. Students from across the school will try to win points for their respective Houses by taking part in performances that will include music, dance and spoken word.

We are thrilled to welcome to Concord the award winning folk artists Greg Russell and Ciaran Algar. Since winning the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award in 2013 and the Horizon Award for best breakthrough act in 2014, the duo have become one of the most sought after acts on the British folk scene. Alongside their extensive touring in the UK and abroad, they have also released 3 acclaimed studio albums.

Combining Russell’s powerful vocals and driving guitar style with Algar’s All-Ireland winning fiddle playing, the duo will treat their audience to a very special lunchtime recital. Following their performance the duo will be running an open song writing workshop suited to anyone with a keen interest in song writing and music production. Workshop attendees will have the opportunity to record their songs at the end of the day and obtain their own copy for personal use.

DJing workshop with ‘Future DJs’ and Shropshire’s foremost Hip Hop producer DJ Buzzword, Wednesday 26th SeptemberWorkshop session, 1.30-5.30pm, Music block MB2 (Morris building)

Come along for an insight into the word of DJing. The resident artists will help you discover and develop your own musical instincts by helping you develop an understanding of the basic building blocks of the DJ’s craft and by providing you with practical and fun hands on experience of both digital and ‘old school’ analogue techniques. By the end of the day you will have become more familiar with digital and analogue decks and will have learned a number of creative techniques including sampling, chopping, tempo warping and sync, spin-backs and drop-ins, scratching, looping and adding FX to enhance your audience’s mood.

We look forward to welcoming to Concord the renowned piano pedagogue and currently deputy Head of Keyboard Studies at the Royal Northern College of Music, Helen Krizos. Helen has wide experience both as a concert pianist and teacher with a reputation that has ensured a growing stream of talented pupils who have enjoyed success both at national and international level, winning top competition prizes, and performing in high profile concert venues around the world such as Carnegie Hall (New York), Wigmore Hall (London), and the Bridgewater Hall (Manchester).

As an internationally recognised teacher Helen has given master classes in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Norway, and Austria. She has adjudicated extensively on many piano competitions in the UK and abroad including the prestigious BBC Young Musician of the Year competition.

As a performer Helen is part of an acclaimed concert duo with Peter Noke. Together they have featured regularly in broadcasts for BBC Radio 3 as well as making a number of recordings on the Hyperion label. Helen has appeared as a soloist with many of the leading British orchestras, including the English Chamber Orchestra, Philharmonia, Bournemouth Sinfonietta, and BBC Philharmonic.

Following her lunchtime recital Mrs Krizos will deliver an open workshop aimed at pianists of all ability levels. The one to one sessions will focus on developing stage craft performing skills.

We are very excited to welcome to Concord the world class string players Zoë Beyers and Richard Jenkinson. Alongside their busy careers as concert soloists and chamber musicians, Zoë and Richard are also sought after associate section leaders with a number of major British orchestras such as the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras and the London based Philharmonia.

Zoë is the violinist of the internationally renowned Hebrides Ensemble, and also performs, broadcasts and records regularly with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and the Scottish Ensemble. She has collaborated with top flight conductors such as Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Andris Nelsons and has recorded to much acclaim standard violin repertoire for major classical record labels including

Chandos. She recently recorded and filmed Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra for Sky Arts. As the cellist of the Dante Quartet Richard has recorded extensively for the classical record labels Hyperion and Naxos and recently embarked upon a project to record the eight Stanford’s String Quartets on the Somm label. He is Musical Director of the British Police Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. John, Bromsgrove and the Music Society of King’s College, London.

Following their lunchtime recital Zoë and Richard will deliver an open workshop aimed at violinists and cellists keen to develop their stage craft skills and string technique.

County Young Musician of the Year Competition, Friday 15th March, 6.00pm Morris Theatre

Shropshire Music Service presents top musicians from across Shropshire an opportunity to showcase their talents in an evening of high quality music making. Solo performers take to the stage to perform a single piece of music no longer than ten minutes in duration. At the end of the evening the performer whose musicality impresses the independent guest adjudicator most will be awarded the title: ‘Shropshire Young Musician of the Year 2019’. Concord musicians (string/wind players, pianists and singers) are welcome to apply. Students can express interest to take part following consultation with the Head of Music or via recommendation by their music teacher. The expected standard for entry is Gr7 and above.

Concord musicians are looking forward to returning to this prestigious local venue for their annual musical engagement. The concert is part of an established series of year round Friday lunchtime concerts, attracting a sizeable local audience.

This informal event provides an opportunity for students from all year groups to showcase their performing talents in a light hearted manner and in a fun and enjoyable atmosphere. The event promises to provide all with a refreshing and memorable experience and will be led by the BTEC music students in aid of charitable causes.

‘A Beethoven experience’ concert featuring the complete works for cello and piano by Beethoven, Sunday 26th May, 3.30pm & 7.30pmMorris Theatre (in association with Shropshire Music Trust)

This one off special concert will feature the renown concert duo comprising Richard Jenkinson (cello) and Benjamin Frith (piano). Richard and Benjamin have been playing together for over twenty years and have performed in many of the country’s most prestigious venues. They both share something of an obsession for the work of Beethoven with a combined experience of performing the majority of the great composer’s oeuvre.

Following the success of last season’s Schubert Experience, this unique day of discovery offers a rare opportunity to hear all of Beethoven’s cello and piano works with illuminating insight by the distinguished musicologist and Viennese Classical period specialist Richard Wigmore.

The chamber ensemble welcomes anyone who plays a musical instrument of any standard. No audition required, just come along and join in. Rehearsals take place in the theatre weekly preparing repertoire for our Autumn and Spring concerts, external concerts and charity events.

Do you already play an instrument? Do you want to learn to play one? Receive one to one tuition by expert teachers on piano, voice and all string, brass, wind and percussion instruments. Lessons are charged extra at £34 per hour. Students normally have one half hour session per week in preparation for the ABRSM, Trinity Guildhall or LCM exams, or simply for fun. Successful exam candidates receive a certificate as recognition of their efforts. At higher levels (Grade 6 and above), the examination results count towards the UCAS point tariff, used for entry to UK universities. Lesson application forms can be downloaded on our Music VLE page or can be collected from the Music office.

If you enjoy singing you can join the Vox choir. Vox consists of singers of about 20 voices and is open to those wishing to deepen their knowledge of ensemble singing and of the vocal repertoire.

The wind ensemble welcomes anyone who plays a wind/brass instrument of any standard. No audition required, just come along and join in. Rehearsals take place in the theatre on a weekly basis preparing repertoire for our Autumn and Spring concerts. Take part and have fun.

• JazzBand–AutumnandSpringtermsasadvertised–inMU2 T.I.C: Mr Rainbow & Mr Stevens

If you have an interest in singing, playing, improvising, or accompanying in a jazz setting please come along to jazz band. The band welcomes a range of instrumentalists, drummers and bass players as well as brass, wind, keyboard/piano and vocalists. No auditions necessary. The Jazz band prepares repertoire ready for our internal concerts in Autumn and Spring terms.

These sessions are available to anyone who is preparing for ABRSM theory or practical exams. You will learn all the music theory you need to pass your exams and work on improving your aural and listening skills which form part of the ABRSM practical examination syllabus.

Where appropriate, keen musicians are encouraged to enter for regional or national level music competitions. Concord students regularly meet success in these and often win prizes or reach the final stages. The symphony orchestra experience is available to more advanced string and percussion players (ABRSM Grade 8+), who want to experience playing as part of a large symphony orchestra. The orchestras give three concerts a year, in late Autumn, Spring and Summer, performing repertoire that ranges from the Classical to 20th century music as well as music from the big screen. More information on the orchestras and their schedule can be found on their websites. Band coaching is open to pop musicians who want to improve their ensemble and stage skills and build on their confidence in preparation for our public concerts which take place throughout the year. The sessions are popular with budding guitarists, drummers and singers. They are led by Mr Rainbow and Mr Stevens who are both experienced gigging and session musicians and with a long and extensive experience in running Rock School sessions and vocational performing courses.

SAMBA band introduces participants to the musical sounds of Rio De Janeiro and Brazil. Rio De Janeiro being most famous for the world’s best street carnival and its SAMBA music. It is a fun filled activity with high energy moves, beats and rhythms…and big drums! The sessions provide a real sense of South American culture while preparing music for our concerts in Autumn and Spring Terms.

• MusicTechnologyclub–AutumnandSpringTermasadvertised–inMB2 T.I.C: Miss Jones

The club is open to anyone who wants to explore making music with computers or record music using our professional multi track recording studio facility. You will learn to use a range of the latest sequencing and notation software to produce and release your own tracks in any style you desire, from Pop and Hip-Hop, to Rn’B and Dubstep.
