SafetyWorks and H&S Evolve over 15 Years

Congratulations to Liz Nichol and Kerry Walker, Principles of the SafetyWorks Group who have operated their business for 15 years! During this time SafetyWorks have seen the role of H&S change in the work place.

“When we started our business in the late 90’s we were doing most of our work in the systems safety arena – risk assessments, auditing and training. There was not a lot of understanding of safety culture at that time, although some companies were practicing a safety observation process – mostly this was in

isolation and out of context with the rest of their safety approach and often as a result of senior management trying to “fix” their employees’ behaviour”, said Liz Nichol.

“We became involved with behaviour based safety fairly early when we were engaged on a joint project for a large client who had had a fatality. They were looking for a fundamental change in their safety culture. It was then that we sourced and adopted the employee engagement positive reinforcement based safety model as the best solution to have this change occur most quickly and effectively for them”.

“Probably in the past 5 years or so, we’ve seen a real shift. Before, we would typically be engaged by the organisation’s safety professionals to implement a “behaviour based employee engagement program”. Now, leaders are realising that it is not only about “fixing” their people but more importantly about having their own meaningful, aligned vision for a safe productive workplace that is translated into behaviours all the way through the organization – starting with their own. So we’re now working a lot more closely with leaders in the first instance and then progressing the same philosophy and tools throughout the organisation”, added Kerry Walker.

SafetyWorks have developed long standing client relationships over the past 15 years with organisations such as Queensland Alumina, Macquarie Generation, Eraring Energy, Newcastle City Council, Fugro Survey (Perth and Singapore), Aurora Energy (Tasmania) and Coca Cola Amatil and also work with a number of prestigious clients including Newcastle Port Corporation, nib Health Funds, Wesfarmers Industrial and Safety and McDonald’s Australia.

For more information on SafetyWorks please contact Marian Day, Business Development Manager on 49 253147.

Physics Selection at ME High Schools at an All Time

High

Selection of Physics as a senior school elective has risen above the State average at Hunter high schools participating in RDA Hunter’s ME Program.

17% of year 11 students enrolled across 26 ME high schools in the Hunter have elected to study physics in 2014 - up from 11% in 2011.

ME schools are now outperforming the rest of the state in the uptake of physics where selection has been declining over two decades.

Since the inception of the program, ME schools have also seen a marked increase in other Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects with Engineering Studies selection up to 11% and Metals and Engineering 14%.

RDA Hunter’s ME Program has been successfully working with the majority of Hunter high schools since 2010 to promote the career benefits of studying STEM subjects as well as developing an integrated educational system that is relevant and job focussed.

The results of the ME Program are becoming evident with examples like Maitland Grossman High School student Hayden Moxey achieving third in the state in Engineering Studies in the 2013 Higher School Certificate.

Maitland Grossman High’s Head Teacher Teaching and Learning Mr Scott Sleap said “We are very proud of Hayden. He has worked hard to achieve this exceptional result. The results of RDA Hunter’s outstanding ME Program are starting to come through.”

To date 7,500 students from 26 secondary schools across the Hunter have connected with 32 of the region’s defence and manufacturing companies through the innovative partnership model. A high percentage of HunterNet companies are sponsoring and working with these schools.

For more information about the ME Program visit www.meprogram.com.au
