From the Pastor

January: Pastor’s Gratitude Part 2 This may be my last chance do a sermon series on Matthew and his Sermon on the Mount. The Beatitudes, the blessings and the challenges of discipleship so here it is. I can’t wait.

January 12th – Why are you a Disciple: Something to do with Jesus I’m guessing?.

January 19th – When to be a disciple: God’s timing and my opinion of God’s timing

January 26th – Who to be a Disciple: Are you talkin’ to Me?

February 2nd – How to be a Disciple: No, really! We’ll be alright.

February 9th – What it takes to be a Disciple: When you say salt do you mean Salty?

I feel blessed by the people and events that all just came together so that I would feel confident getting my hip and knee attended to. I am thankful that I can be fully involved in leading worship again. I am greatful to have a few weeks to talk about being blessed and living out blessings.

Our Faith Teaches We don’t do this life alone. That is a hard lesson for a rather independent, stubborn old mongrel like me. We are blessed. If we are meant to do a thing we need to learn to stop and look around. What resources, what people has God put in our lives?

Our Faith Commitment I know I would rather help ten people than ask one for a hand. It is fun to help others and it feels good. Not only should we share our gratitude by serving, be we need to have the courage to let our gratitude allow others to serve us. We are indeed blessed. It is often true that we are

too stubborn to use the blessings of help that God has put right in front of us.

God Holds Us Last month I said, “The prayer and promise of Christmas is Immanuel, “God with us”, reminding us that God will come again and again, into our lives. “God with us” is the message behind the Gospel of Matthew. Even when Matthew’s challenges seem too great, the promise of blessing is there. When the call to be salt is too challenging, when the judgement of “outer darknes with weeping and gnashing of teeth” looms large in our imagination, there is always the return to the Sermon on the Mount. Do not fear, God is with us. You are blessed. So live out your faith boldly. Live large and when you fall flat, remember to ask for help because you are blessed.

Yours in Christ, Pastor Otis

FROM KELLY, LLM Just a little blurb . . .

If you haven’t already heard the announcement, I have completed my internship and have been approved for ordination by both the faculty of Wartburg Theological Seminary and the bi-synodical candidacy committee of the Northern Great Lakes Synod and East-Central Synod of Wisconsin of the ELCA. Woo Hoo! That is cause for celebration.

This means the following: 1. I have one more semester of coursework to complete before graduation in May. 2. As my internship is complete, I am no longer Intern Kelly. If you feel the need to give me a title, you may refer to me as “Licensed Lay Minister” or “Seminarian,” however both titles are better suited to formal occasions and communications. Calling me “Kelly” is just fine. 3. I will remain at First Lutheran until my studies have been completed AND I receive my first call as a Minister of Word and Sacrament. That means I will be around until at least the end of May 2020.

I would like to express my gratitude for everyone’s support and prayers. Blessings, Kelly

Stewardship

OLDER AND DUMBER

I could make a case that the older I get, the dumber I get. Exhibit A is that making such a statement is evidence of that dumbness. It makes more sense to argue that the older I get the more I realize how much I don’t know. Are you following me here? Two factors may be at play here-memory loss with aging and the huge amount of information we are saturated with via the internet.

It would be comforting to claim that as we confront the awareness of how much we don’t know, we are getting wiser. After all, shouldn’t wisdom come from age and experience?

To make matters worse, we are at a time when there are “alternative” versions of the facts and truth. What is factual or truthful depends upon the lens through which we view life. That’s a big problem when we try to verify information we receive. Getting smarter is infinitely more difficult if we can’t count on the veracity of the facts or truth. Getting wiser suffers, as well.

What’s all this got to do with stewardship? I would contend that being a good steward requires wisdom. When we are wrestling with what it means to be wise, turning to God should always be our default setting. How? Prayer and the bible will provide good guidance (some would say even “divine guidance”). Stewardship is all about giving. James 1:17 says, “every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of light, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change”. Regarding wisdom, James 1:5 says, if any of you is lacking wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given you”.

It always amazes me how simple it can be for wisdom to come to us. Just view the world through the God lens.

In Christ,

Dirk Manson, Stewardship Chair

Lutheran World Relief update

Thank so much again to all who helped in a variety of ways to make our Quilt Auction a success. A check in the amount of $3260.00 has been sent to Lutheran World Relief to help with shipping costs.

Thanks to all who donated mittens, socks, gloves and scarves. We had a total of 463 items. Some people were very busy knitting! All items were given to Salvation Army and they

were very thankful. We are looking for someone to take over handling the once a year mitten tree. If you would like to help, see Ann Christiansen.

If you do, it would be appreciated if you informed Property chair Dale Skogman so we can track the persons who are trained. Thank You! The web sites are:
