REFLECTION Pastor’s Letter

FROM THE PASTOR

St. John Capistran 412-221-6275 St. Thomas More 412-833-0031 School 412-833-01412 stm-sjc.org 4

In his response to the Sadducees, Jesus explains that our God is a God of the living, not of the dead. Our faith tells us that for those who believe, death is not the end, but rather a transition into the fullness of eternal life with God. We must choose to be faithful to our mission here on earth to serve and love our God that we might enter the glory of the resurrection. Saint Paul tells us that “God wills that all people be saved.” That will, however, is not forced upon us. Rather, it is a positive choice made in faith. We open our hearts to the powerful presence of God and bring that grace to all our daily decisions.

C.S. Lewis wrote a compelling parable entitled The Great Divorce where citizens from hell are allowed to take a bus tour to heaven. The first thing they notice about heaven is that it is bright and is solid ground. As each person relates their story, they are invited to let go of their fears and resentments, all of those issues keeping them from God. If they do, they may stay. Still, the majority choose to hold on to those temporal things and end up leaving. It is their choice and God honors our choices. He will not force anyone to stay.

We believe in the Resurrection of Christ who is our way, our truth and our life. We have chosen to follow Him. Today, we ask for strength to follow where we have not yet been strong enough. We seek his grace through the Sacraments, in particular, the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We hope and pray that, like those brave and faithful sons of the Maccabees, we might remain strong and choose always the God of the living who calls us to eternal life in Him. Choose wisely and faithfully as the Lord calls. Answer that call with faith, hope and love. Live for our God. He lives for us and gave His only Son that we might live forever.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS MUSIC

St. John Capistran 412-221-6275 St. Thomas More 412-833-0031 School 412-833-1412 stm-sjc.org

ST. JOHN CAPISTRAN ST. THOMAS MORE Religious Education Classes: Our faith formation sessions resume this Tuesday and Wednesday, November 12th & 13th.

Thank you! A very special thank you to all who helped make the celebration of Confirmation this past Thursday so special: Bishop Waltersheid; Fr. Peter Horton, Fr. Jim Chepponis, and Fr. Jim Bedillion; Deacon Bill Batz; our eighth grade catechists, Mrs. Celeste Wilson, Mrs. Mary Cappetta and Mrs. Tracy Smith, who helped to prepare our newly confirmed; our Music Minister Mr. Daniel Kovacic; our cantors, the St. John Capistran Contemporary Choir and instrumentalists; the altar servers; our seventh and eighth grade faith formation families and Lynn Hogan and TEAM HOSPITALITY, for hosting the Confirmation Reception; our faith formation students who served as ushers; and everyone else who helped in any way to make the evening such a special one for our newly confirmed and their families. Thank you and God bless you!

Too much Halloween Candy? We are collecting any unwanted/leftover Halloween candy from now through November 13th only. Please place the candy in the orange bins located in the hallway by the Religious Education Office and in Capistran Hall. The candy will be distributed among various organizations, including the Red Door, SHIM, and St. Thomas More Manor. Thank you!

Thank you! A very special thank you to all who helped make the celebration of Confirmation this past Monday so special: Bishop Zubik; Fr. Peter Horton, Fr. Jim Chepponis, and Fr. Jim Bedillion; Deacon Bill Batz and Deacon Larry Sutton; our eighth grade faith formation catechists, Megan Cummins, A.J. Libatore, Michele Libatore, Mark Gesk, Marlene Kish, Diane Abrahim, and our eighth grade school catechists, Diane Fischer and Windelin Rickard, who helped to prepare our newly confirmed; our Music Minister Mr. Daniel Kovacic; our cantors, the St. John Capistran Contemporary Choir and instrumentalists; the altar servers and everyone else who helped in any way to make the evening such a special one for our newly confirmed and their families. Thank you and God bless you!

Children’s Liturgy of the Word: Every Sunday (except when Religious Education Classes are not in session), at the 11:30 a.m. Mass, Children’s Liturgy of the Word is celebrated for children ages 3 to 8 years of age (second grade). We are in need of a few teen helpers. This would be great way to earn service hours for Confirmation. If you are interested, please email Kelly Robertson, Children’s Liturgy of the Word Facilitator, at [email protected].

First Holy Communion Sign-ups: Information will be sent to families of First Communicants soon regarding First Holy Communion sign-ups via Signup Genius.

From Shannon Fox: Conductor and Music Coordinator of the Children’s Choir This year, we will be working together as one parish with both SJC and STM and offering an opportunity for your child to sing during the upcoming 2019 Christmas Season. All children from Grades 2-8 from both churches are invited to sing in our newly combined Children’s Choir. It has been a tradition as far back as I can remember. When I was a member of the St. John Capistran Children’s Choir thirty years ago, the tradition has always been having the Children’s Choir sing at the 5:00 PM Christmas Vigil Mass. We not only want to keep that tradition alive, but we want to make the program grow with more members and new opportunities throughout the year in both of our churches in the next few years.

Rehearsals would be held on Tuesday evenings beginning at 5:30 PM and concluding at 6:30 PM at St. John Capistran on the following dates:

* Tuesday, November 19th * Tuesday, November 26th (Rehearsal will be held regardless of CCD being on break) * Tuesday, December 3rd * Tuesday, December 10th * Tuesday, December 17th * Sunday, December 22nd (Rehearsal following the 11:00 AM Mass at SJC followed by a pizza party for the children.) The children will sing at the 5:00 PM Christmas Eve Mass at St. John Capistran Church *Friday, January 3rd (Festival of Scripture and Song, 7:30 PM @ SJC) Those families that have children in Tuesday afternoon CCD at St. John Capistran will be able to have their children be let out of CCD 15 minutes early to attend rehearsal.

If this is something that you and your children would like to participate in, we would be ecstatic to have you join us! Please email me at [email protected] before rehearsals begin on November 19th. I will send you the regis-tration form that will also be located in the bulletin. Forms will also be distributed in your child’s CCD classes, but if your child attends Catholic School, I can also send you the official sign-up form or you can find it at the entrances of either church. Please do not wait until the last minute, as space is limited since our churches are working together.

I am looking forward to working with you and your children during this year's Christmas Season!

ENJOY DISCOUNT BOOKS Enjoy discount books are available in the St. Thomas More office between now and Christmas. Cost of the book remains $30 and proceeds benefit the parish and the Knights of Columbus Charity Fund.

St. John Capistran & St. Thomas More Angel Tree Starting on Saturday, November 16th through

Sunday, November 24th you can select your Angel Tree gift tag and support one of the many wonderful local charities in need of assistance this Christmas season.

We wanted the Angel Tree to truly reflect the desire to support the local community and to align with the teachings of Jesus Christ - love thy neighbor. ( Matthew 22: 39) With this goal in mind, several new charities have been added this year. Please feel free to take as few or as many tags as you want, but know that the committee and the charities are counting on these gifts being returned by the dates noted. Trees and angels will be available at both churches. All gifts are to be returned to either STM or SJC as noted, no later than Sunday December 1st. Gifts MAY be returned earlier to the parish office due to the holiday weekend (if needed). Gifts should be placed in a gift bag, but be unwrapped, with the ANGEL attached for identification purposes and tracking. Thanks greatly for your support! Without you and your generosity this ministry would not be able to provide for so many this Christmas season! Questions: Call Mary Kirk at 412-805-5522 or Kristine Fishell at 412-915-0528

St. John Capistran 412-221-6275 St. Thomas More 412-833-0031 School 412-833-1412 stm-sjc.org

Congratulations to the following young men and women from our parish that were confirmed in the faith on November 4th & 7th. May the Holy Spirit always be their guide and help them to lead lives faithful to the

teachings of Christ. May they be assured of our continued prayers and support as they become fully initiated members of the Catholic Church.
