Acting Out One’s Faith By Dr. Randy L. Bennet
Kern County Director of Missions
Acting out on one’s faith comes in many shapes and sizes. Moses lifted his staff and the Red Sea parted so that the people of God could escape a sure massa-cre by the Egyptian army.
Elijah called down fire from heaven that consumed the water drenched altar. Jesus healed a man born blind. Paul healed a young man who had fallen to his death during a worship service. The Bible is filled with hun-dreds and hundreds of faith experiences by His people.

Faith & Perseverance Have you done anything recently that took faith and perseverance? I did. I set up an online registration account for our 2019 Christmas Banquet. It won’t show up on blog or be recorded for posterity. And yet, it took a lot of faith and perseverance to even try. It took faith to deal with multiple challenges.
Taking on the Challenge Every easy-to-use program I’ve used has had hidden difficulties, un-stated expectations and unstated re-quired skills. This program is no different. I faced three or four basic
challenges: 1) Choosing the best online registration for purposes; 2) Updating our database of email addresses; 3) Transferring email addresses to the program. The last two challenges were the hardest. In our little world of one thousand or so people, keeping our database up-to-date in terms of phone numbers and email addresses is almost next to impossible. The program required me to use MS Excel to transfer the addresses to the program. Not only do I not use Excel on a regular basis, I actually dislike using Excel. I had to set up the spreadsheet according to the registration program’s expectations. And then I had to narrow down my contact list from 765 to 125 who were to receive an invitation to the banquet.

No wonder my blood pressure was sky high when I went to my car-diac rehab last Wednesday.
A Little Help Boosts Faith
Fortunately, I don’t work alone. Rose Asuncion who is helping us out during Dawn Passmore's recovery is really good at Excel. I made good use of the intercom function of my phone: “Rose, can you come in here!” She patiently helped set and configure the spreadsheet and showed me how to delete addresses.
Lessons Learned After days of active faith I was able to send the invitations out last
Thursday. Whew! So far the site seems to be working well. We’ve been receiving online registrations just as we hoped. Is there a lesson here? Yes. It takes active faith to try new things, both personally and corporately. Each new project or endeavor will require the development of new skills and the help of people with special skills. And don’t forget to celebrate the positive outcome.

81st Annual Meeting November 4, 2019 marked the
Annual Meeting of Kern County
Southern Baptist Association. It
was held at the Multipurpose Hall
of Valley Baptist Church where
pastors, their wives and church
leaders assembled to listen to
encouraging messages and be
informed about the association’s
status and affairs as well as plans
and goals for next year.
The Moderator is Pastor Mitch Min-
son of Daybreak Baptist Church
who is reelected as such for 2020. The theme for this year tackles on
“A Vision for Church Planting in
Kern County.” Dr. Phil Neighbors
on Matthew 6:10 stressed that we
should focus our prayers more on
“Thy kingdom come” rather than
“give us our daily bread.” He
shared this vision of expanding
God’s kingdom by reaching out to
the ever-growing Hispanic commu-
nity in Bakersfield & Kern County.

ator Pastor Mitch Minson looks on

God is moving. Pastor Phil shared about the
movement happening with the
Hispanic ministry of Valley
Baptist Church. Pastor David
Quiroa now shepherds in two
campuses at Fruitvale and Mt.
Vernon.
How Does It Work?
The ministry envisions to
create new Hispanic churches
by using modern technology:
1. Pastors would make
available existing facilities in
their own church for potential
Hispanic worship services.
2. A live worship team would
lead in gathering and singing
during the time of worship to
have a personal connection
with the visitors and attenders.
3. Preaching of the Word in
the Spanish language will be
provided via pre-recorded
video feed.
SET FREE MINISTRIES
Pastor Mike Salazar also
shared his vision for the
expansion of God’s kingdom.
He is in charge of an intercity
mission called Set Free
Ministries. Currently, he is
in partnership with Valley
Baptist Church.
Set Free aims to minister
to what he calls the
‘whosoevers’ - people in
Pray for this Exciting
Opportunity
While the ministry is in its
early stages, Pastor Phil
invites churches who would
like to partner with Valley in
this vision. He calls pastors
to pray for and help explore
the many
possibilities
on how they
can minister
to the growing
population of the Hispanic
community. Amen!
homes, gang members,
prostitutes and other
neglected segments of our
society, and help them
become model citizens. As
Pastor Mike used to be one of
them and God transformed
him by His mercy and uncon-
ditional love, so he would like
to pay it forward.
He shared that Set Free
Ministries even go into the
neighborhoods “where the
pizza man can’t go anymore.”
They bring the gospel to
prisons and juvenile halls.
Now God has opened doors
for them to witness to people
in the processing centers of
Immigration. He reports that
he was able to baptize 77 men
in the last three months!
Pastor Mike calls onto the
churches to have partnership
with them and help train more
pastors who will reach more
“whosoevers.” Amen!

God is faithful in blessing our churches with both ma-
terial and spiritual gifts. We had a substantial increase
in giving as we encourage our people to be more com-
mitted to share their blessings with joy as the verse
above says. The Lord indeed loves cheerful givers!
