Dear Parents, The term is well under way and we thank our parents who attended the Parents’ Evenings. We also encourage all parents to stay in contact with the teachers and keep a close eye on your child’s work as well as social life to know what is happening in their lives. The Grade 4 and 5 learners returned from camp with many fond memories and interesting stories. They all had an enjoyable time. We wish our Senior Choir a safe and successful trip to the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School this weekend, where they will be participating in a music festival ‘Music in the Mountains’. We are very proud that our Senior Choir received an invitation to this special event. We notice that there are still a large number of parents walking their little ones to class in the morning. Though we understand that some of our little ones find it daunting to walk to class alone, we do request that our parents encourage their child to go to class without being accompanied. Also, we remind parents that if you wish to see your child’s teacher, please make an appointment at Reception. Congratulations to our Grade 4 - 7 Top Ten learners for Term 1, WELL DONE! We are very proud of you, keep up the good work! Exam timetables and breakdowns were sent home last week. Please ensure that your child is prepared and at school for the upcoming exams starting on Wednesday, 22 May 2019 for the Grade 7 learners and Thursday, 23 May 2019 for Grade 4 – 6 learners.
With only two weeks before our Go-Kart Day and Autumn Fair on Saturday, 4 May 2019
we remind you that your assistance, donations and contributions are invaluable and will help make the day a success.
At our school we strive to offer our learners the best equipment and facilities possible, supporting this PA Fundraiser Event helps us to
achieve our goals.

Academics
The Grade 4 learners will have the opportunity to attend a STUDY SKILLS COURSE on 23 and 24 April 2019, at no charge The goal of the course is to prepare the learners for the Mid-year examination. Effective study methods and skills are amongst the topics to be covered. The learners will be exposed to different learning styles and techniques. The presenter, Dr. Emsie Rheeders, comes highly recommended and is successful in capturing the learners’ attention in coaching them to deal with stress and everyday life. Parents are also invited to attend the course at no extra cost, as this will enable you to assist your child with the reinforcement of the skills taught.
Use Your Own Words A great way to check your understanding.
1 Don’t copy straight from your textbook. 2 Write summaries using your own words. 3 Use headings to break content into
smaller chunks. 4 Lists and bullets help summarise long
sentences.
Make Flashcards Good for studying definitions or work that you need to memorise.
1 Write a concept or question on one side of the card.
2 Write the explanation or answer on the other side.
3 Test your knowledge or quiz your friends with your flashcards.
Be the Teacher An excellent way to improve your memory retention.
1. Read your study notes out loud.
2. Teach yourself, an imaginary friend, a real friend or even a pet, dolls or teddy bear.
3. Glance at your notes if you need to but practice until you can do it from memory.
Start your preparations for the exams well in advance. Don’t leave studying to
the last minute.

WhatsApp Groups and Class Dojo: The Golden Rules
We all have that one inescapable WhatsApp group that drives us completely round the bend. Maybe it’s your child’s class group or a work group that you need to be a part of. You can’t leave because it’s the only source of essential information, but there are a few simple rules to stick to when communicating on social media:
Always keep to the purpose of the group! Don’t share irrelevant messages about other
topics. Do not spam the group! If you would like a group to share memes, adverts or deals with
then set one up for that exact purpose. Don’t be offended if others leave. Not everyone wants the same information. Do politely excuse yourself before you leave a group. Post your message in one single text, don’t post every word or sentence in a new message. Don’t create groups with minors who don’t know each other – no parent wants their kids
talking to strangers. Do not have one-on-one conversations in the group. Switch to private messages. Do not post in any group between 17:00 and 07:00 unless it is an all-out emergency. If someone asks a question and you don’t know the answer don’t respond with “I don’t
know”. Just wait for someone who knows the answer to reply. If someone asks a question of a personal nature (like asking for advice) don’t respond if
someone else has already answered. The group is not a political platform. No arguing, no heated opinions, no fear mongering, no
hyped up drama, no fake news. Check your sources before you share. Never EVER use a group to berate someone else or air grievances. If you have an issue
address it one on one with the relevant person. Hit “Mute” on your Whatsapp group. This is a sanity saver. You will
still receive all the messages, but your phone won’t buzz or make a noise with every message you receive.
If you are not sure, ask yourself these three questions before you post:
1. Is this relevant? 2. Is this necessary? 3. Is this a good time to post?

A note to Glenstantia Primary School from a former Glenstantia Learner………, Hi my name is Tarryn van Schalkwyk (nee Joel ). I am now happily married to Ashley van Schalkwyk, a past student of Glenstantia , the Class of 2004. Oh how I miss the good old days at Glenstantia Primary School, I am a past student of Glenstantia Primary School (Class of 2007), Glenstantia was an outstanding foundation phase in my academics, sporting and creative career as well, I took a fond liking to art in primary school especially being taught by an amazing teacher whom I still have fond memories of today, which I’m sure most past students can agree with me, this amazing teacher was Mrs Bezuidenhout. I left primary school with a great inspiration to continue excelling as a young woman in all aspects of my life. Thereafter, I started high school at Willowridge High School where I managed to become a Gauteng-North cross-country runner in 2009, RCL (prefect) from Grade 10 up until I matriculated from high school. Even though I found balance
between my academics and sporting, one constant element that kept me grounded since I was small was my passion I had for art/design, I chose Design as a subject from Grade 10 and was the Top Design Student for 2 years. I graduated from Willowridge High School in 2012. So where to from there, you may wonder? I was fortunate enough to study BA Visual Communication Design at an elite institute known as Open Window, I graduated from University in 2015 and started my early career as a Junior Graphic Designer in a few creative agencies and now I found myself as Junior Marketing Manager for a financial services company called MotorHappy, I now hold two design awards (Gold & Bronze) from the Assegai Awards for a campaign that I was a
huge part of called “South Africa’s Ultimate Journey”. Although, all my design work is digital I continue to do physical drawings and paintings in my spare time and I am always available to do commissioned pieces for anyone who is interested! I can positively say I wake up each day and love every minute of what I do, part of this will always be thanks to Glenstantia for the early leadership and values they instilled in me, I continue to think of all the best days that were spent at Glenstantia and I would like to thank each and every teacher who played an important role in my education from a young age and has helped shape me into the woman I am today. So students of Glenstantia, be thankful for your teachers and most of all enjoy each and every day of your primary school days. Kind regards Tarryn van Schalkwyk

Grade 5 Trip to Bush Pigs
Once again our Bush Pigs trip was one for the books. What a lovely, adventurous and exciting tour we had. Every single child had a blast and participated in mudsticles, fire making, early morning walks, educational talks, night walks, the all famous Chief Chocolate and the most amazing food. We ended our trip with the opening of a new camp where we had bonfires and sang camp songs. Bush pigs is definitely a trip every child will remember forever.
