“I stick to the facts and I’m good with figures, plus I have a mind like a filing cabinet – maybe that comes from studying Law.

I’m also a big reader and movie fan, quick to pick up on storylines and details. My dad once gave me a novel about a woman who became leader of her country, and I remember thinking ‘I want to be like her’.

Thanks to my manager I’ve discovered I’m a people-person, and I’m using this insight to develop the leadership style that suits me. It means I can be myself and inspire others to think strategically too, like the woman in the book.

When I’m asked to assess the risks in a particular part of our business, I put my strategic hat on. I organise the data, spot trends in the accounts, reach a conclusion about the business, then work with others on strategies for making it stronger.

Right now I’m analysing the performance of the motor finance products we offer to car buyers through the big car dealerships. You could say I write the scripts for making businesses more successful – there’s a lot of people and action involved.”

AUDIT Discover how to control a FTSE 100 business

A consultative division to every business in the Group, we put in place the robust controls that mitigate risks. Audit can lead to broad career choices – Strategy Aces often do well in Audit.

A STEPPING STONE INTO LEADERSHIP Our three-year Graduate Leadership Programme has four placements – you learn how the Group functions as a whole and get insights into specific areas as you perform audits that test and improve our control frameworks.

This breadth makes Audit a great stepping stone into senior leadership. You do three placements in one or both of the audit teams shown below, and one placement outside of Audit (your final placement is in Audit).

• Functional Audit – understand how customer-facing teams work in frontline areas like Retail Banking and Products, Insurance, Commercial Banking and Digital.

• Risk Specialist Audit – get to know the back office functions that keep things running smoothly, areas like IT, HR, Finance, Credit Risk and Group Operations.

DEVELOP AND QUALIFYStudy for an ACCA accountancy qualification, with each qualification stage aligning to each placement, so you can readily apply what you learn in the classroom to what you do at work.

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT & CUSTOMER OPERATIONS Discover how our £multi-billion operation delivers for customers

Business Management & Customer Operations works across our other business areas to manage the flow of payments and turn strategy into operations that deliver the best experience for customers. We’re a good choice if you’re a Relationship Champion or a Solutions Pro.

GET A STRATEGIC OVERVIEWFind out what it means to deliver excellent customer experiences by moving through three, eight-month placements on our two-year Graduate Leadership Programme. We partner you with teams in anything from processes to property, sourcing to security, so that you get a well-rounded view of how the Group operates.

You learn how to inspire change, manage and influence people, analyse processes, design solutions and provide internal consultancy that leads to improvements for our customers. You could even get involved in cyber security, negotiating new commercial contracts, developing the performance of a customer service team, or supporting our trading and other activities.

DEVELOP AND QUALIFYReceive the support of experienced mentors and line managers on our award-winning development journey. They help you discover your strengths and how they can make you an effective leader for the future, while you study for a Chartered Banker professional qualification or similar.

Every day is a new opportunity for you to develop your stakeholder management, analytical, presentation and client-facing skills. You could be delivering change projects, responding to cyber threats, assessing and mitigating risks, working closely with clients in our relationship management teams or contributing to the performance management of our division as a whole.

DEVELOP AND QUALIFYYour line managers and mentor support you in making more of your strengths, understanding your career choices and getting the most out of your working life.

You’ll study for an industry-recognised qualification such as Chartered Banker, APMP or Six Sigma. DIGITAL BANKING “My life’s changing as fast as the digital world is. I’m constantly identifying new trends and exploring new ideas – pioneering, innovating, communicating.

Banks need to keep developing their technologies so that they can create the best digital experiences for their customers. It’s why I chose the digital sector for my career, even though I’m not a ‘techie’.

I actually studied Chinese and Politics at university and was a volunteer teacher in Shanghai for a year. So I’m naturally inquisitive about what’s going on in the world and passionate about the languages and tools that people use to communicate.

This is the reason the digital world excites me so much. It’s a communications revolution that’s helping everyone to bank in a more agile way – where they want, when they want and how they want. My programme gives me the freedom to drive this change by shaping my own projects, and the agility to mould my work schedule around my home life.

I’m discovering my strengths as a leader and communicator. At the moment I’m monitoring the way our customers behave in the digital space, especially on social media. I’m analysing the trends, and using my insights to lead customers into more engaging digital relationships with us.”

RELATIONSHIP CHAMPION

SHYAMCOMMERCIAL BANKING – CLIENTS & MARKETS

“What gives me a lift? Seeing happy clients, knowing we’ve done a good job for them.

Basically my work is about relationships, and that includes my relationship with myself. I want to be the best I can be, but that doesn’t mean working unnecessarily long hours. It’s not like that here – the culture is open and relaxed and we have lives outside of work.

For me, I love challenging myself to perform better. So I’m often looking to squat a few extra pounds in the gym, or shave a few seconds off my runs, or arrive at meetings five minutes early so that I can get to know my clients better as people.

A winning powerlift isn’t just about strength and effort, it’s also about expert coaching and support. In my programme I get masses of this from my mentor, who’s developed a lot more client relationships than I have.

He’s showing me that every situation is different, and that it’s important to structure, shape and present analysis with that particular client’s individual needs in mind. I’m discovering that this tailored approach leads to great relationships and better outcomes for our commercial clients.”

SOLUTIONS PRO

NICKBUSINESS MANAGEMENT & CUSTOMER OPERATIONS

“I’m discovering how business works, how people tick, and how to get the best out of both.

At the moment I’m managing a team of 30 advisers who help customers to resolve their debts with the bank. It’s a bit like being a football coach – you want to do the best by your team, keep raising performance and playing to a strategy. And sometimes, to get the result, you have to make snap decisions based on what you see in front of you.

This is what makes a Solutions Pro – leading, communicating, finding smart ways to solve problems, creating an environment where others can be their best.

So long as you come with the right soft skills, your development plan takes care of the technical side.

I’m no culinary genius but I do love my food, and when I go for lunch, usually to the local pop-up food stalls, I often watch the chefs at work and think about delivery. These guys know how to cook – they know what works, what customers want, what the stall has to do to make money, what orders they can handle. I do the same thing in my job – deliver solutions that work for customers, for my team and for the bank.”

HR “It’s only human to want a reasonable work-life balance – the team here understands this.

HR is about building a strong community of colleagues, enabling them to do their jobs well, rewarding them fairly, supporting them in developing their careers and the way they work. It’s about people, and it’s about business.

This is a complex relationship and our people strategy takes understanding on all sides, so I work closely with teams across the organisation to shape thinking and inspire colleagues to perform even better in their jobs. My approach is human, communicative and flexible.

Flexibility is especially important for me because I have two little ones. Obviously I have to fit my work commitments around them, and my managers and mentor are very supportive of this.

Even though I’m in the middle of conducting a survey of more than 80,000 colleagues, gaining new insights into how they engage at work, I can still structure my days so that my children get time with me. I can even fit in the fundraising I do for charity. Work, life, community – it’s possible to strike the right balance here.”

We’ve been recognised for some significant achievements in this area – for instance, more than 30% of our senior jobs are held by women. Inclusion and diversity is woven through our purpose and our networks – and your development.

AGILE FUTURE FORUM A founding member of the forum, along with other leading employers, we promote agile working policies and practices to support you in finding the work-life balance that’s right for you.

ACCESS Our Access network connects and supports colleagues with disabilities. We have more than 3,000 members and run high profile initiatives, including a national event, regular newsletters, a mentoring scheme and colleague development sessions.

We also host disability awareness sessions, signposting colleagues to sources of support and promoting wider Access activities.

BREAKTHROUGH Our award-winning women’s network is now the largest of its kind in the UK with 13,000 members and 4,000 mentors. In 2015, Breakthrough held more than 50 events on career development, parenting and mentoring.

RAINBOW With more than 3,000 members and supporters, and an active Twitter following, our LGBT professional network connects, develops and supports LGBT colleagues across the Group.

In 2015 we ran our first national event, along with sessions about LGBT and faith, same sex parenting and coming out. We also raised £10,000 for the Albert Kennedy Trust, an organisation that helps young homeless LGBT people.

REACH Our inclusive Group-wide network values and embraces the diversity of our racial, ethnic and cultural heritage – hence the acronym REACH.

We actively support our members through networking, mentoring and access to role models so that they can reach their full potential, and so that the values and diversity of our workforce reflect those of our customers.

An internship with us could turn out to be the first ten weeks of your future career. It can open some important doors – including the potential for you to be offered a place on one of our Graduate Leadership Programmes, with no extra assessments, purely because you’ve impressed us during your internship.

It‘s an incredibly insightful experience. You’ll work on real projects with knowledgeable and supportive people, learn about your strengths and weaknesses, discover opportunities you never knew existed, and get a feel for our business that you can only get from being on the inside.

Our range of internships is very broad and you gain a variety of experiences in a short space of time – it’s the perfect introduction to a career where you can keep on developing.

All our 13 Internships take place over the summer, at the end of your penultimate year at university. We pay you a pro-rata salary and, depending on where in the UK we place you, we also pay for your accommodation.

1 APPLICATION FORM & TEST GRADUATES & INTERNSOur form asks for your basic details and a bit about your studies and experiences; our test examines your strengths, numerical reasoning and cultural behaviours – it’s all done online and takes about 90 minutes. We get back to you within two weeks and, if you’ve done well, we invite you to stage 2.

2 VIDEO INTERVIEW GRADUATES & INTERNSTell us, in a recorded interview, why you want to join us while we explore your strengths and passions in more depth. If you’re applying for an internship, we say yes or no after this interview. If you’re applying for a Graduate Leadership Programme, we let you know whether you’ve made it to stage 3.

3 ASSESSMENT CENTRE GRADUATES ONLYHere’s where we get together and discover much more about each other through a group activity, a presentation, one-to-one strengths based interview and for some streams a numerical reasoning test. We send you a full feedback report within a few weeks of attending an assessment centre and, if we think you’re right for us, we offer you a place on one of our Graduate Leadership Programmes.

You should have discovered quite a bit about us from this brochure and from our website. Now it’s time for us to discover who you are and what matters to you.

Tell us about your work and studies, and what you like doing in your spare time. What are you good at, interested in and passionate about? What do you want from us? And what can you offer us?

Develop into a well-rounded person and professional, prospering in an inclusive environment, working with people from different backgrounds – and enjoying the work-life balance, rewards and benefits that are right for you.
