What will happen at Waves: Harnessingthe Power?

As part of our 20th anniversary celebration of successful women and leadership, Saanich PeninsulaCFUW volunteered to host the annual Provincial conference for BC Council April 17-19, 2015. Given ourlocation in Sidney on the Saanich Peninsula, we chose a conference theme of Waves: Harnessing thePower. The topic elicits themes such as: waves of the future, waves of technology, waves of Innovationand brain waves.

Conference Location: Mary Winspear Centre, Sidney

What can you expect when registering? To be welcomed to Sidney by the Sea by enthusiastic &committed CFUW members excited to show off the beauty, friendliness and diversity of our SaanichPeninsula, which neighbours our Capital city, Victoria. If you are a walk-on passenger via BC Ferries, someof the hotels can arrange a free pickup service, e.g., The Travelodge. If a pickup service is not availablefrom your accommodation, then please complete the appropriate section of the registration form so that

CFUW members can make arrangements to meetyou and transport you to your Sidney regionaccommodation. For your information theapproximate taxi fare from either the airport orthe ferry to the Mary Winspear Centre is $10-12.

If you arrive mid-day Friday you can take advantage of an array of organized tourism opportunities (priorregistration required for most options): a guided “walk-about” of the historical town of Sidney; a tour ofthe Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre; a golf game; a Thai cooking demonstration; a hike in Dean Park, a tourof Butchart Gardens, a Garden Tour led by CFUW member Donna Cottell (Master Gardener) or an Eco-Cruise of the adjacent Gulf Islands. Take your pick and indicate your tour preferences when you register!The time frame for options is approximately two hours. Or you may want to spend the time shopping inthe unique, boutique shops on Beacon Avenue in Sidney.

Other activities associated with the conference include our numerous tours both on Friday afternoon and

also on Sunday at the conclusion of the conference. Below are descriptions of some of those tours:

FRIDAY TOURS

Tour A - Hike in Dean Park

CFUW member Celine Fittes will lead you on a hike through the trails of Dean Park that will show you lovely

vistas of Mt. Baker, the valley and ocean.

Dean Park is a 10 minute drive from downtown Sidney; the home of a large controlled sub-division

established in the early 80’s, part of which is now a Provincial Park. Early pioneer John Dean donated the

first 32 hectares of property for the park in 1921, followed by four other settlers who contributed adjoining

lands. Remnants of their homesteads remain in the park today. The 155 hectare John Dean Provincial Park

has five main hiking trails that cross the south and east face of Mount Newton. The 6 kilometres of trails

range from wide gravel access roads to narrow hard packed dirt in heavily forested areas. This park has

some of the largest Douglas fir trees that remain on the south coast of Vancouver Island. In the spring the

park comes alive with a vivid display of wildflowers native to British Columbia, including drifts of blue

camas lilies, which carpet the understorey, as well as common red paintbrush, sea blush and shooting

stars.


Tour B - Sidney Walking Tour

For all its sophistication, Sidney is a town, not

a city, and has a population of only 11,300.

Enjoy the gentle topography, the low-rise

architecture, unique boutiques, galleries,

international restaurants and conspicuously

laid-back lifestyle. Sidney's status as a

"Booktown" – 12 bookstores in a downtown

radius of 4 blocks – speaks of an easygoing, literate populace. Long-time resident Hazel Phillips will guide

you through a walking tour describing the history of the town and why people from across Canada flock to

relocate to such a temperate climate and “small-town” feel of easy access to all amenities 12 months of

the year, yet close to a fairly large city as the capital of BC, Victoria.

Like most corners of Vancouver Island, the Saanich Peninsula was

first occupied by Aboriginal peoples. In the Sidney area, the Salish

First Nation arrived as early as 10,000 years ago. Sidney's written

history begins in 1859, when the northern end of the Saanich

Peninsula was explored by the Royal Navy survey vessel, HMS

Plumper. By the turn of the 20th century, Sidney was a thriving

farm community. Cannery buildings lined the early waterfront and

processed millions of tons of oysters, clams and local blackberries,

pears and peaches.

Tour C - Par 3 Golf Course at the RidgeLocated opposite Cordova Bay 18 hole golf course, the Ridge Course offers spectacular views of Haro Strait

and the San Juan Islands, a 9-hole par 3 course, an 18 hole grass putting course and a short game facility

offering silica sand bunkers, swales and two very different types of target greens. It usually takes 1.5 hours

to play this short course with a few challenging holes over water. Transportation is provided.


Tour D - Eco Cruise

Cruise quietly amongst the coastal islands, passages and wildlife hotspots rich with seals, sea lions, nestingeagles and comical oyster catchers. Harbour porpoise and orca whales sometimes even choose to watchus! The on-board ecologist offers an interesting narration about Sidney's scenic waterfront, its diversemarine life, and the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve including Little Group islets and Dock Island.

Tour E - Peninsula Garden Tour

Long-time CFUW member and experienced Master Gardener Donna Cottellwill escort visitors to three different, private gardens whose gardeners willbe on hand to answer any questions. These very special gardens feature:dramatic spring displays, early preparation work for growing organicvegetables, and wonderful use of a small outdoor space. Share the joy ofindoor - outdoor living on the Saanich Peninsula!

Tour F- Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre

Participants will be led by their own personal Oceaneer to take a closer look at all of the amazing creaturesliving in our underwater habitats. And if you have questions, your guide will have answers!

The Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre is located at the end of Beacon Avenue, adjacent to the Sidney PierHotel, minutes away from Mary Winspear Centre.

Tour G- Thai Cooking ClassCheck out this You Tube video of what you will experience if you enrol in Kallyanee’s Thai Cooking class:http://kallayaneeskitchen.com/. Kallyanee teaches this course at her home on McTavish Road, which isclose to the airport. All food is included in the course. You won’t need to go out to dinner after thissumptuous feast as you will have all the tools to go home and cook your own Thai food. Transportationprovided to and from the course.

Tour H- Butchart Gardens

The Butchart Gardens, one of the biggest attractions in Victoria, has 55 acres of wonderful floral displaywww.butchartgardens.com/. Throughout the seasons there is always something of interest in the variousgardens: from the fragrant, winter blooming shrubs, to the fresh delights of spring, to the abundance ofsummer colour, to the grand finale of autumn. You will be transported to and guided through the gardensand back to Mary Winspear Centre in time for Tea and Table Talk.


SUNDAY TOURS

Tour I- Bus Tour of Victoria (Sunday afternoon)

Enjoy an impressive 2 ½ hour bus tour departing from and returning to Mary Winspear Centre. During thisguided tour you will experience the beauty and sights of Sidney, Saanich Peninsula and Victoria.

Tour J- Restaurants/Shopping in Sidney (Sunday afternoon)

Guided by a knowledgeable CFUW Saanich Peninsula member you will experience the joys of shoppingand/or dining in Sidney by the Sea.

Tea and Table Talk

On Friday afternoon, around 4 pm, all conference delegates are invited to participate in an informal Tea

& Table Talk—a good time to meet new people and greet old friends over tea, goodies & conversation at

Mary Winspear Bodine Hall.

Opening Reception

The opening reception will be held at Mary Winspear Centre at 7:30 pm where you will be welcomedto the Traditional Territory of the Coast Salish People. Sidney Mayor Steve Price and MLA Gary Holman willalso welcome you.

You will hear from MP Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party, who is amember of our Saanich Peninsula CFUW. Elizabeth is an amazing woman, who iswidely respected by all members of the House of Commons.

Elizabeth May is an environmentalist, writer, activist, lawyer, and leader of theGreen Party of Canada. Elizabeth became active in the environmental movement inthe 1970s. She is a graduate of Dalhousie Law School and was admitted to the Bar inboth Nova Scotia and Ontario. She held the position of Associate General Counselfor the Public Interest Advocacy Centre prior to becoming Senior Policy Advisor tothe federal minister of the Environment from 1986 until 1988. Elizabeth becameExecutive Director of the Sierra Club of Canada in 1989, a position she held untilMarch 2006, when she stepped down to run for leadership of the Green Party ofCanada.

In 2010, Newsweek voted her one of the world’s most influential women. She is also author of eightbooks and for the second year in a row she has been voted hardest working MP by her colleagues “Beingvoted Parliamentarian of the Year in 2012 was such an honour, I really didn’t expect to get anything thisyear,” May said. “So I am very grateful that my colleagues have voted me hardest-working MP (2013).”Elizabeth was voted Orator of the Year for 2014.

Her latest accomplishment is successfully getting her Private Members Bill, the Federal Frameworkon Lyme Disease Act, passed unanimously in the House of Commons and ratified by the Senate inDecember of 2014.

Due to the wide interest in this topic it is being offered at both workshop sessions.


Leigh Anne Swayne delves into the final frontier of knowledge about how the human body works – thebrain. The assistant professor in the Division of Medical Sciences at the University of Victoria wants todetermine how we can use new brain cells to repair brain injuries.

In her research, Dr. Swayne focuses on questions relating to brain development and repair. She works on

problems at the microscopic and sub-microscopic levels and Dr. Swayne is also an expert in neuroanatomy

and has a wide breadth of knowledge in the field of Neuroscience. She will begin her workshop outlining

some basic tenets of how the nervous system functions as a whole. As this interactive workshop

progresses, she will touch on what is known about the underlying causes of certain neurological diseases.

By the end of the workshop, she will have shed light on what is going on at cellular and sub cellular levels.

Participants will come away with a better understanding of how the nervous system works, in health and

disease, right down to the ‘nuts and bolts’.

Carol Hamilton—Colwood City Mayor

The Politics of Going Green—Colwood’s Solar Project

Just elected for a second term, Carol is dedicated to bringing her

leadership and strength to Colwood’s Council as together they work

to actively engage the community and foster a more open, inclusive

and united civic culture while addressing challenges presented with

the global financial crisis in order to make the decisions necessary

to grow Colwood into a vibrant community.

Colwood is located on the West Shore of Greater Victoria, home ofthe renowned campus of Royal Roads University and is, along withLangford, one of the fast growing communities on Vancouver Island.The City of Colwood's award-winning Solar program helps Colwoodresidents and businesses save energy and reduce greenhousegasses through solar energy and energy efficiency upgrades.

How do you inspire the average homeowner to consider energy

saving retrofits? The Solar Colwood project shows that solar and

other clean energy solutions are affordable and effective, while reducing our community’s environmental

impact, supporting local jobs, and reducing energy costs. Thanks to support from the federal government’s

Clean Energy Fund, BC Hydro, and many other partners, the City of Colwood has installed solar panels on

the Fire Station, provided public electric vehicle charging stations, trained solar installers, and provided

incentives and expert advice to Colwood residents and businesses to install many energy saving and

renewable energy technologies. We now have more solar hot water retrofits per capita than any other

community in Canada, and research from Royal Roads University has shown tremendous energy saving

results in participating households. We have exceeded our original energy and water saving targets, and

have succeeded in providing fertile ground for renewable energy and energy efficiency innovation.


Nella Nelson: – Aboriginal Education Innovator

Riding the Waves of the Aboriginal Educational Journey

Nella’s story: For the past 35 years, Aboriginal Education in theGreater Victoria School District has been on an amazingjourney. Throughout the journey there have been manystories to tell and many stories to share as we work towardscreating a sense of place and belonging for Aboriginal studentsin the school system while also creating a bridge ofunderstanding and knowledge for all students and educators.The Spirit of Alliances through our Aboriginal EnhancementAgreement has linked the school district with the communityand we work together to share our stories, our dreams and ourvision for Aboriginal Education. It is the stories that provide thepathway for our education journey in our school district.

Nella is an inspiring storyteller, an administrator in the GreaterVictoria School District, a University of Victoria sessionalinstructor, a very active member of the Aboriginal communityand continues to serve on a number of local and provincialboards and advisory committees. Nella was seconded by the

Ministry of Education to work on the curriculum teams that developed the First Nations Studies Frameworkfor the province. These teams completed the Integrated Resource Package for B.C. After earning her BFA, Lori was the Commonwealth scholar in Ghana for her MFA. In Canada she worked

in corporate communications, and studied life sciences and kinesiology. As a Massey Resident Junior

Fellow, she attended the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine, and graduated with her MScBMC in

2006.

Lori is an award-winning scientific visualization

professional who, through Waters Biomedical, loves

creating medical and scientific educational materials, in

a variety of media for diverse audiences, from patients

to scientists. Lori is a “Renaissance” woman—artist,

scientist, environmentalist, and winner of the CFUW

National Charitable Trust Scholarship.

At the Victoria CFUW National Conference in 2012, she

had the audience mesmerized as she told the story of

her life from childhood to becoming the owner of her

own scientific communications company. While you

may not have a feature length 3D scientific film when you complete this interdisciplinary workshop, it is

designed to: be fun and playful; to introduce you to a few accessible 3D applications for hand-held devices;

to demonstrate the ease and accessibility of these applications; and to inspire you to explore them for

yourselves!

delegates. At the end of the banquet activities, the hospitality room will be open to continue these

conversations.

Sunday Morning Interfaith Service

On Sunday morning there will be an interfaith service led by Rev.

Margaret Harper. All are welcome to attend at 8:00 AM Sunday morning

in Room 4. Rev. Margaret Harper will lead the Interdenominational

service on Sunday morning. Margaret is a member of the ministry team

at St. Paul’s United Church in Sidney. Raised as a PK (Preacher’s Kid), the

call to ministry came as a huge surprise. Following a degree in music

education, one thing led to another and voila, the journey continues to

enfold to this day! She currently divides her time between being the

chaplain for the Luther Court Society in Victoria (where elders teach her

every single day about the meaning of life) and St. Paul’s United where

she primarily ministers in the areas of pastoral care and worship.

“As we meet each other on the road of life, we have the opportunity to discover a resilience and strength

that somehow sustain us beyond our wildest imaginings….Ultimately, this discovery is ‘the sacred’ – a place

of Joy and Hope.”
