I had decided to go back to school last year to learn how to use the various applications on a computer and was given a scholarship for their IT program. The school I go to has a new class every five weeks which meets four days a week for three hours. This was my first IT class and it took more time, then I expected for being a newbie in this field. Well the class is over, but I didn’t complete it but will have to take it again. At least, now I know what is expected of me and will have an upper hand when I retake this class in two months while I finish my last two courses of English and Math to get my Professional Business Support Certification. Coaching vs. Ment oring Now onto some training. I was recently blessed to attend a Church Coaching workshop that taught the difference from Coaching and Mentoring. Do you know the difference? What I have learned is that coaching can be defined as empowering others to pull from their life experiences, and mentoring is a process that involves communication and is a relational experience which one empowers another by sharing experiences and resources. Types of Mentors: Intensive 1. Discipler: Teaches basics and grounds younger believers spiritually. 2. Spritual Guide/Director: Helps cultivate a deeper walk and Spiritual intimacy. 3. Coach/Apprenticing: Imparts skills and draws gifts, call and competencies. The tell, show, and do method. Occasional 4. Counselor: Unravels and helps rebuild issues. 5. Teacher: Downloads information and instruction for learning. 6. Sponsor/Networker: Links mentoree to relationships and opportunities. Passive 7. Contemporary Model: An influencer who is alive and has mentoring impact. 8. Historical Model: A deceased influencer such as a Biblical or secular person.

Did you f ind yourself in any of these categories?

Even though this was a seminar for other Pastors within our District of the church that I go to, Ifound that these def init ions can also help us as leaders in this profession. In order for thebusiness to grow, we have to learn to not only develop ourselves as a leader, but we have todevelop others to become leaders within the organizat ion. You want the business to grow awayfrom you so that you aren’t always in teaching mode with your new leader. This is why we have somany dif ferent levels within our organizat ions. As Zig Ziglar states who is a Historical Mentor now,“Help other people get what they want in life, and you will get what you want.”

There is one more that I would like to add to this list and that is A Virtual Mentor. In today’s agewith the internet and social networking, we are in the business of making new connect ionseveryday. I have yet to meet any of them in person but in t ime who knows where our journeys willlead us. However, one such virtual mentor for me is Paul Hutchings. He has a daily mindset call inwhich we do a book study of Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. Here is an interview that he didwith Greg S. Reid who is the modern day Napoleon Hill. I hope that you join us on our call so thatyou can also f ind the gif ts that God has given you so that you may become a better leader.
