Our core purpose at Viridor is to give the world’s resources new life.

We aim to recycle, recover and safely manage every kilogram of waste that society throws away. We will support you in implementing and prioritising the Waste Hierarchy by treating your waste streams in the most appropriate and sustainable way, while keeping things user-friendly and financially viable.

1. CAN I REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF WASTE MY BUSINESS PRODUCES?

Answer: Your supplier should assist you in the reduce, reuse, recycling policy to keep unrecyclable waste to an absolute minimum.

Page 5: WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A RECYCLING AND WASTE MANAGEMENT … · 2019-09-05 · Your recycling and waste management partner should be able to demonstrate their commitment to the health

Minimising the supply chain

Reduction:Active measures can be taken to reduce the amount of waste you produce and to identify areas where waste levels can be improved. Waste reduction strategies look into your supply chain to identify production and packaging materials that you will ultimately need to dispose of.

Reuse: Identifying opportunities in alternative reusable resources, rather than disposing of them unnecessarily, is another way of reducing the amount of waste you produce. Your waste management partner should also be able to help you identify ways in which you can utilise valuable material directly back into your supply chain, reducing waste and increasing efficiency.  This ensures that your business pro-actively supports the circular economy. Think about what you throw away that could be reused.

Recycling:Be committed to recycling as much of your waste as possible.

Composition levels can be vastly improved by working to increase knowledge about waste segregation. The better the composition and higher the quality of your recyclate streams, the more material can be sent onwards for processing into new products. Educating employees about waste segregation is key.

Recovery:Any waste that cannot be recycled could still be effectively utilised through an Energy Recovery Facility (ERF).

ERFs offer a pro-active approach to diverting waste from landfill. By incinerating waste to create heat and steam, ERFs efficiently generate electricity and heating, providing renewable energy for local homes and other facilities.

Disposal:In the rare cases where waste cannot be treated further up the Waste Hierarchy, it should be safely and responsibly transferred to landfill.

2. CAN I MIX MY BUSINESS WASTE?

TEEP (Technically, Environmentally, Economically, Practicable) was a regulation introduced in January 2015 by the Environment Agency, requiring both public and private waste collections to ‘separate collection’ of paper, plastic, metal and glass for recycling with the aim of increasing the quality and quantity of recycled materials by reducing contamination. By applying the TEEP test, a supplier should be committed to ensuring that your waste is collected in its separate streams, helping you achieve your sustainability goals even while reducing costs.

In 2018, Scotland introduced a new initiative to achieve their goal of no food waste going to landfill by 2020. This means that all food waste producers have a legal responsibility to separate food from general waste.

Answer: Yes and no. It depends on your size, location, waste streams and whether or not your waste goes to a Material Recycling Facility (MRF).

Page 7: WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A RECYCLING AND WASTE MANAGEMENT … · 2019-09-05 · Your recycling and waste management partner should be able to demonstrate their commitment to the health

3. HOW WILL I KNOW MY WASTE IS BEING TAKEN AWAY SAFELY AND ETHICALLY?

Answer: In reality, you will find it difficult to know for sure unless you visit a facility yourself. However, any reputable company should be able to provide guarantees and proof of legitimacy with certifications.

Page 8: WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A RECYCLING AND WASTE MANAGEMENT … · 2019-09-05 · Your recycling and waste management partner should be able to demonstrate their commitment to the health

Your recycling and waste management partner should be able to demonstrate their commitment to the health and safety of all its employees, customers, and people in the communities they serve. They should have a clear and positive health and safety culture across the company, involving and engaging the workforce at all times.

A safe and ethical partner should be governed by some sort of Health, Safety and Welfare Policy. This policy should state clear objectives, designed to help ensure no harm comes to anyone as a result of their services.

Viridor is committed to ensuring the health and safety of all its employees, customers, and people in the wider community we serve. We have worked hard to develop a positive health and safety culture across the company, working together to achieve our corporate safety target to achieve and maintain zero RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations) events.

We have held and maintained certification to ISO 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System standards since 2007. And yet, to further ensure all employees and site visitors have health and safety at the front of their minds, we have also embarked on a ‘home safe’ campaign which we would be happy to introduce to any of your staff.

4. WHAT ABOUT CARBON EMISSIONS?

Carbon FootprintThe UK’s Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) scheme and the internationally recognised Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) actively encourage waste management and energy providers to report their carbon footprint in the annual Corporate Responsibility Report, to ensure they are fully engaged with climate change and the wider sustainability agenda.

Answer: It is widely known that waste can be transported as far as China to be disposed. Choose a company which actively tries to reduce carbon emissions by using only local waste and recycling facilities.

Page 10: WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A RECYCLING AND WASTE MANAGEMENT … · 2019-09-05 · Your recycling and waste management partner should be able to demonstrate their commitment to the health

Transport and Fleet Emissions Transport and fleet divisions plays a crucial part in reducing our carbon emissions. As a company committed to reducing carbon emissions in this way, your waste management provider should be able to demonstrate measures such as computerised route optimisation, GPS tracking and geo-fencing, in-cab telemetry, and state-of-the-art safety equipment to ensure a robust, efficient transport service that has minimal environmental impact.

Carbon Reduction CommitmentAsk your waste management provider about their commitment to carbon reduction.

As part of the Pennon Group, Viridor participates in the UK’s CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme, and were the first company in our industry to achieve the ISO 50001 standard (the latest international best practice in energy management), demonstrating to our customers and stakeholders that we are committed to transforming ourselves into a company with reduced costs and less reliance on fossil fuels, ready for the future.

Eco StarsWe are proud to be working with Eco Stars, a government funded scheme identifying areas around the UK where air quality is affected by pollution from vehicles. The project works with employers from the transport industry to reduce pollution in the identified areas.

Viridor initially met with Eco Stars to demonstrate our microlise vehicle tracking, measuring engine idling and driving characteristics to reduce fuel wastage. We have 5* eco recognition in almost all of our sites and are working toward these in others.

Page 11: WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A RECYCLING AND WASTE MANAGEMENT … · 2019-09-05 · Your recycling and waste management partner should be able to demonstrate their commitment to the health

5. WHERE DOES MY WASTE END UP?

Answer: If you don’t already know this, then you need to ask your current supplier today.

As a business it is your legal responsibility to know where your business waste goes and whether it is being treated properly. Environmental regulations state that every establishment or business, no matter where it is based, has the responsibility for managing their waste properly - meeting ‘Duty of Care’ obligations under Section 34 of the Environment Protection Act 1990 (non-compliance to Duty of Care regulations can result in a financial penalty).

As part of your service, your supplier should ensureall the waste streams they deal with have a cleardisposal route.

Your supplier should be transparent in processingyour waste and should be able to provide evidencewith full audit trails.

Your supplier should also supply a Duty of Careas a legal responsibility, using Waste Transfer Notes (WTN) as shown here, or in the case ofHazardous Waste; Hazardous Waste ConsignmentNotes (HWCN), to ensure these standardsare met every time.

6. HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO EDUCATE MY STAFF ABOUT WASTE AND RECYCLING?

Education is key to many of the challenges faced within waste. That’s why Viridor offer in-house training seminars for relevant staff about how to recycle better. We can also arrange visits to our disposal facilities in order to develop a deeper understanding of how recycling is processed and how we use residual waste for renewable energy.

Additionally, we can provide strategic waste awareness events designed to engage all staff on site, and even work together to create information packs that will include waste stream information (what goes in what bin) the service schedules, and an overview of all the bin stores on site for reference with advice and contact information.

Answer: Very. Increasing staff awareness could have a huge, positive impact on changing waste culture. Not to mention, better staff co-operation will lead to reducing your recycling costs!

Page 13: WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A RECYCLING AND WASTE MANAGEMENT … · 2019-09-05 · Your recycling and waste management partner should be able to demonstrate their commitment to the health

For a more in-depth educational experience, take a look at our new interactive online tool, Discover Viridor, at www.discoverviridor.co.uk and discover how simple sustainability can be.

If we can work with you to reduce your general waste as much as possible, it will not only produce a better quality recyclate and help us make better use of the waste hierarchy; it will also contribute to reducing your costs. We will work with you to help improve your segregation at the source. By carrying out spot checks and taking photographs of your waste contents, we can ensure better quality material in order to lessen both your general waste and your costs.

Speaking your language We appreciate that for those who are not in the waste industry, or have had limited experience with recycling, it can be overwhelming, if not a little confusing. To help this, we provide clear and correct labelling solutions on all our containers to make the recycling process simple and more effective. All our signage is in accordance with The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP).

Our aim is to provide the best possible service to our customers. If an incident occurs that causes customers to be displeased with our service, we want to know about it; this is the only way we can understand, learn and continue to improve.

The below identifies the escalation chain:

Answer: Your service provider should have robust complaints procedures in place. At Viridor, we are committed to ensuring our procedures resultin a mutually agreeable outcome for everyone involved.

8. WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM AN EFFECTIVE COMPLAINTS PROCEDURE?

In the first instance, we would like any complaints to be taken up with your Customer Service Advisor by way of an email, letter, telephone call or in person, containing the specifics of the problem and appropriate contact details. Your Customer Service Advisor will, in accordance with our complaints procedure confirm receipt and begin an investigation. The person raising the complaint

Here are some examples of how working with Viridor can help you contribute to the community:

Street TreesOne example of a local community scheme is Viridor Street Trees - an urban innovative tree planting project in partnership with the Red Rose Forest Trust.

In 2011, we teamed up with Manchester City of Trees with a plan to transform Greater Manchester’s streets. Since then, we’ve planted over 150 Street Trees in seven districts across Greater Manchester, including Stockport, Trafford, Manchester, Bury, Wigan, Bolton, and Oldham - directly benefiting 364 homes, and over 1,000 residents.

10. HOW WILL I CONTRIBUTE TO THE COMMUNITY? Answer: We are always looking to participate in community investment programmes such as charitable giving, sponsorship and volunteering schemes, supporting the local community while raising awareness about the importance of waste management.

Page 21: WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A RECYCLING AND WASTE MANAGEMENT … · 2019-09-05 · Your recycling and waste management partner should be able to demonstrate their commitment to the health

Dandelion TimeViridor organised a team day which incorporated a team meeting in the morning and a volunteering session in the afternoon. Viridor chose to volunteer with ‘Dandelion Time’ which is a charitable project for children and young people traumatised by abuse, neglect or having early life attachment difficulties. They undertook several jobs including grounds maintenance, vegetation clearing and bottle labelling.

“Dandelion Time saves thousands of pounds each year from work carried out on corporate volunteer days. There are many vital jobs that need to be carried out throughout the year from gardening through to painting. This year we have enjoyed working with and would like to thank Viridor for making a positive contribution to the work we do with local children and their families.”

Carymoor Environmental Trust Since 2008 Viridor has sponsored Carymoor Environmental Trust, an environmental education and nature conservation charity based near Castle Cary.

Over the last 10 years, Viridor has played a key role in supporting Carymoor, providing both financial and practical support. In 2016 Viridor and Carymoor collaborated on the Biodiversity Benchmark Award, recognition from the Wildlife Trusts of the environmental value of the regenerated landfill site. Viridor and Carymoor staff worked closely to develop a new management plan and to identify priority species for the site. Viridor staff contributed to this work with team away days, giving staff a chance to help manage the nature reserve and learn new skills.

Some 100 school groups come to Carymoor each year, with the environmental contrasts of the site providing poignant opportunities for environmental education. From the tipping face of the current landfill with its pollution controls, to the established nature reserve with its abundant wildlife, the site shows how society’s wastefulness can be a catalyst for change and help to inspire the next generation to do better.

Recycling ChallengeViridor teamed up with Wastebuster and Kent County Council to involve over 100 schools across Kent in a Recycling Challenge, encouraging children to get actively involved in their household recycling. The competition attracted a huge 610 entries and further inspired Gravesham Borough Council to challenge schools in their area to take part in a local version of the event.

“By promoting achievable actions, and empowering young people to make a difference, campaigns like the Gravesham Home Recycling Challenge will hopefully change attitudes and positively influence recycling behaviours. The children in this school have been wonderful at getting their families to take part.”

Katy Newnham, Wastebuster’s Founder and Chief Executive Officer

11. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PARTNERING WITH A SINGLE WASTE PROVIDER?Answer: Some waste service providers only offer collections, or may only offer to process single waste streams. This means having to manage multiple suppliers, which

can prove tricky when trying to keep track of where your waste ends up (see Chapter 13 to find out more about your legal responsibilities).

We are a UK company trading since 1957. As part of the FTSE 250 Pennon Group Plc, with over 330 UK sites including collection units, recycling and processing sites, as well as a closely managed network of specialist partners to call on, Viridor are a safe pair of hands for consistant and reliable service through a single supplier.

Always investing in the future, as well as our many recycling facilities, we are also putting £1 billion into our Energy Recovery Facilities (ERF). These clean, high-tech facilities treat any waste that cannot be

recycled through our other facilities, to produce usable materials as well as generating energy. A percentage of the energy product is taken to power the ERF itself, while the rest is used in the form of heat or turned into electricity and fed into the National Grid.

12. WHAT IS A CIRCULAR ECONOMY?

We do not live in a sustainable world. We all know about the challenges we’re facing with our world’s declining resources, climate change and decline in biodiversity. And yet, as well as having a commitment to the world we live in, we also have a commitment to sustaining our economies and ensuring opportunities for our growing population. So, what is the solution to these conflicting first world problems?

By embracing a Circular Economy, businesses such as yours can contribute to the sustainability of both our environment and our economy. By reusing and recycling products you can keep materials alive for as long as possible, you can actively contribute to making a Circular Economy a reality.

Answer: The world’s resources are not limitless. A circular economy aims to keep resources in use for as long as possible, recovering and regenerating materials at the end of each lifetime.

Page 28: WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A RECYCLING AND WASTE MANAGEMENT … · 2019-09-05 · Your recycling and waste management partner should be able to demonstrate their commitment to the health

Here are a few ways that Viridor can help you work towards a Circular Economy:

Material Recycling Facilities (MRFs) Our network of MRFs have the largest throughput capacity in the UK, transforming mixed waste streams by separating them into individual high quality material. These can then be reprocessed and used to make new products.

uBins

Our innovative uBins are an example of a product produced entirely of reprocessed materials.

We have partnered with Green Warehouse Ltd who utilise our recycled plastic to produce 70L modular containers. These contain 57% less carbon per kg than their virgin plastic equivalent. The uBin is an exciting addition to our product range and illustrates our material expertise. By collecting customers’ waste and recycling materials, as well as offering the uBin to our customers, Viridor has achieved true closed-loop recycling.

Viridor work with all sort of businesses; providing waste management solutions to everyone from county councils and office blocks, to schools and hospitals. Each of these have different requirements, and so Viridor tailors its services to suit their individual needs.

Here’s an example of how Viridor adapted to provide recycling and sustainable waste solutions for a less conventional customer, MediaCityUK:

14. WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE VIRIDOR AS MY RECYCLING AND WASTE MANAGEMENT PARTNER?

Answer: Don’t take it from us. Why not take a look at what some of our current customers have to say about our service?

At MediaCityUK there are three kinds of waste collection, but only one vehicle.

MediaCityUK is the new home to the BBC, ITV, Coronation Street and the University of Salford, not to mention a hub of hotels, bars, restaurants and retail facilities.

Located at Salford Quays, on the banks of Manchester’s historic ship canal, MediaCityUK is becoming extremely popular. It is therefore essential to develop a sustainable waste strategy so that growth is achieved with the minimum impact on the environment.

To achieve this, Peel Media, the developers of MediaCityUK, chose to partner with Viridor. As well as focusing on residential training, resource optimisation and carbon efficiency, Viridor has invested £250,000 in an industry-leading vehicle that allows it to do three waste collections in one visit.

It has three separate compartments for recyclables and waste streams. Each compartment features advanced

bin weighing and container recognition technology providing customers with real-time data on how much they are recycling.

The vehicle is the first of its kind in the UK and minimises vehicle movements at MediaCityUK whilst ensuring maximum value is generated from the source segregated waste.

“With Viridor on board we are confident that we will continue to develop more waste minimising and recycling strategies, ensuring that we preserve our green and eco-friendly community here at MediaCityUK.”
