What s Happening at Highland On Sunday, September 26, we were blessed in worship by Jo Anne Swartz singing this beautiful hymn, a love song from God to all God’s children of all ages. The lyrics are a beautiful poem that we wanted to share with everyone in the church family: God Is With Us - Always 1. “I was there to hear your borning cry, I’ll be there when you are old. I rejoiced the day you were baptized, to see your life unfold. 2. I was there when you were but a child, with a faith to suit you well; In a blaze of light you wandered off to find where demons dwell. 3. When you heard the wonder of the Word I was there to cheer you on; You were raised to praise the living Lord, to whom you now belong 4. If you find someone to share your time and you join your hearts as one, I’ll be there to make your verses rhyme from dusk till rising sun. 5. In the middle ages of your life, not too old, no longer young, I’ll be there to guide you through the night, complete what I’ve begun. 6. When the evening gently closes in and you shut your weary eyes, I’ll be there as I have always been with just one more surprise. 7. I was there to hear your borning cry, I’ll be there when you are old. I rejoiced the day you were baptized, to see your life unfold.” OCTOBER 2021 Office Hours The church office is open 9 AM - 12 PM, Monday - Friday. God Is With Us - Always

1. “I was there to hear your borning cry, I’ll be there when you are old.

I rejoiced the day you were baptized, to see your life unfold.

2. I was there when you were but a child, with a faith to suit you well;

In a blaze of light you wandered off to find where demons dwell.

3. When you heard the wonder of the Word I was there to cheer you on;

You were raised to praise the living Lord, to whom you now belong

4. If you find someone to share your time and you join your hearts as one,

I’ll be there to make your verses rhyme from dusk till rising sun.

5. In the middle ages of your life, not too old, no longer young,

I’ll be there to guide you through the night, complete what I’ve begun.

6. When the evening gently closes in and you shut your weary eyes,

I’ll be there as I have always been with just one more surprise.

Fall Festival Help us welcome our community for an evening of outdoor fun and fellowship

Join us on Sunday, October

10, 4 - 6 PM for a time of

food and fun for all ages.

The Pumpkin Patch will be

open for sales and photo ops.

There will be food for

purchase, free games and

activities for children and

youth, tours of our

Community Victory Garden,

and information about ways

to make an impact in our

local community. In

addition, we'll be collecting

canned foods for Interfaith

Food Shuttle.

CROP Walk Sadly, another year of COVID has necessitated major

modifications to the Greater Tringle Area CROP Hunger

Walk. Instead of a single, massive gathering, teams and

individuals are encouraged to still secure pledges for

contribution and to do their own walk! Highland is still

determining how we will accommodate these plans for our

team, but your financial contributions are still welcome!

Support a walker that you know personally, or make

contributions through the church office with “CROP Walk”

in the memo to support our team’s fundraising. CROP Walk

contributions go to the ministry work of Church World

Services, helping to end hunger locally and globally.

she enjoys reading, cooking, and painting. A life-long

Methodist, Sarah Evelyn and her husband Connor are

members at Church on Morgan in downtown Raleigh. If

you're in the church office during the week, stop by,

introduce yourself, and welcome Sarah Evelyn to the

Highland family.

Extravagant Generosity Our October worship series is in conjunction with this year’s stewardship campaign, “Extravagant Generosity.” Generous giving is a direct reflection of our hearts — what and who we love, our hopes and dreams, and how we want to reflect God’s generous love by sharing it with others. Take time this month to think about your own heart and your commitment to God’s work and ministry: What do you love about your church? Who are people you love in the church? What are your hopes and dreams for our church? And what are you willing to do and to give to make those dreams happen? You will receive additional mailings with details about this year’s stewardship campaign and church finances, as well as a pledge card. Please prayerfully consider how you will support Highland in the coming year and return your pledge card to the business office or in worship on October 24.

Welcoming Families

One of the biggest

challenges of the pandemic

has been finding ways to

safely gather together for

worship, for fellowship, and

for general ministry and

church life together. More

recently, this has been

especially true for families

with children who are still

unable to receive COVID

vaccines.

Our Children’s Ministry

Team has again and again

risen to the task, finding

creative ways to connect

with families and especially

using outdoor gathering

space to provide a safer

setting for ministry.

Children’s Sunday School

has transitioned to Wonder

Kids, where elementary-aged

children are learning about

God and growing in their

faith. This program has

successfully accommodated

a shift to meeting outdoors

on the playground on Sunday

mornings.

In addition, families are

frequently looking for

opportunities to have fun as a

family in ways that feel safe

at this time. Family Movie

Nights on the Lawn are a

great example and have

become an easy and visible

way to welcome our

community for a monthly

evening of family time.

Similarly, the Children’s

Team has sought COVID-

safe ways for children to be

in service. On Friday,

September 17, ten families

pitched tents at Highland and
