What price would you pay for freedom? In the exhilarating action epic FOR GREATER GLORY (formerly titled CRISTIADA), an impassioned group of men and women each make the decision to risk it all for family, faith and the very future of their country, as General Goros-tieta (Academy Award® nominee Andy Garcia), the retired military man who at first thinks he has nothing personal at stake as he and his wife (Golden Globe winner Eva Longoria) watch Mexico fall into a violent civil war. Yet the man who hesitates in joining the cause will soon become the resistance’s most inspiring and self-sacrificing leader, as he begins to see the cost of religious persecution on his countrymen . . . and transforms a rag-tag band of rebels into a heroic force to be reckoned with. The General faces impossible odds against a powerful and ruthless government. Yet it is those he meets on the journey – youthful idealists, feisty renegades and, most of all, one remarkable teenager named Jose – who reveal to him how courage and belief are forged even when justice seems lost.

Shooting on historic locations throughout Mexico, the equally accomplished behind-the-scenes team includes director Dean Wright, whose credits include TITANIC, the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy and CHRONICLES OF NARNIA; director of photography Eduardo Martinez Solares (BAD HABITS; Oscar®-nominated editor Richard Francis-Bruce (THE SHAW-SHANK REDEMPTION, SEVEN, HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE); production designer Salvador Parra (VOLVER); and Oscar®-winning composer James Horner (AVATAR, TITANIC, BRAVEHEART).

Mexico adopts a Constitution that contains strong anticlerical language, setting the stage for a potential assault on religious free-dom.

The Calles adminis-tration begins an aggressive attack on religious freedom, especially against the Catholic Church. Mexican bishops suspend public worship.

In early August, 400 armed Catho-lics shut themselves in the Church of Our Lady of Guada-lupe, in Guadala-jara, in the Jalisco state. A shootout with federal troops left 18 dead and 40 injured.

The day after the shootout in Guada-lajara, Mexican troops stormed the Catholic church in Sahuayo, in the Michoacán state. The pastor and his vicar died in the violence.

St. Luis Bátiz Sainz, a priest and member of the Knights of Columbus, died when Mexican troops raided his home and executed him and three members of the Mexican Association of Catholic Youth.

The formal Cristero rebellion began on Jan. 1 with release of “A la Nación” (To the Nation), a document written by René Capistrán Garza, leader of the Mexican Associa-tion of Catholic Youth. It decried the attack on religious freedom and urged organized resistance.

The Cristero fighters and the government reached agreement to end the conflict. The government agreed to permit resump-tion of public worship, and Catholic bishops agreed to cease calls for elimination of constitu-tional language against religious freedom as long as the government adopted a lenient approach to enforcement.

Catholic women form the Feminine Brigades of St. Joan of Arc in support of the Cristero fighters.

St. Rodrigo Aguilar Alemán, a parish priest and member of the Knights of Columbus, was tortured and mar-tyred by Mexican troops.

José Sánchez del Rio convinces his mother to let him join the Cristeros. The youngster is accepted and serves as a flag bearer.

U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Dwight Whitney Morrow begins a series of meetings with President Calles during which the Cristero War was a primary topic.

On Feb. 10, José is martyred after refusing to renounce his faith.

Blessed Pope John Paul II beatifies a group of 25 Cristero martyrs.

In May, after formal validation of a 1993 miracle attributed to the martyrs, Blessed Pope John Paul canonized the 25 as saints.

On Nov. 20 – Christ the King Sunday – Pope Benedict XVI beatified another group of 13 Cristero martyrs, including Blessed José Sánchez del Rio.Plutarco Elias Calles

becomes President of Mexico.
