Building Blocks to ExportingThe New Exporters to Border States (NEBS) is a comprehensive program designed to give Ontario manufacturers, distributors, agents and other business professionals the tools they need to expand their business across the Canada-United States border.

For over 25 years, the NEBS program has addressed the needs of small and medium-sized Ontario manufacturers and service firms, whether new to exporting, seeking to expand their sales to the United States or interested in updating their knowledge of U.S. cross-border regulatory issues.

NEBS is run by the International Trade Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development and Innovation in partnership with the Canadian Consulate General in Buffalo.

Two-day programThe two-day program provides companies with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of exporting to the United States. Participants are transported by chartered bus from Toronto to Buffalo, New York.

On arrival in Buffalo, participants are briefed on a range of border-related issues, including:

• U.S. business travel and immigration requirements

• Currency exchange and corporate business planning options

• Taxation and legal considerations

• U.S. customs clearance procedures

• Marketing and pricing considerations

• Export financing and insurance options

• Agent and distributor identification

Participants also visit a logistics fulfillment warehouse facility in Buffalo and receive information on provincial and federal trade programs and services. As well, one-on-one meetings are arranged with the trade commissioners at the Canadian Consulate in Buffalo. The program is offered four times a year.

Half-day seminarThe NEBS program is also offered across Ontario four times a year as a half-day seminar. The seminar includes key components of the two- day NEBS program such as U.S. immigration requirements, banking and currency exchange options, legal and taxation considerations, U.S. customs documentation requirements as well as information on provincial and federal trade programs and services.
