Planning your moveThinking ahead and staying organized continue to be all-importantstrategies. Begin by taking a household inventory and decide what tomove, sell, discard, or donate. For handy reference, keep importantmove-related phone numbers on the previous page. Then start markingoff the items on this checklist. Finally, make a list of friends, relatives, andbusiness associates. Or save a step by putting each name on a mailinglabel you can use for the “We’ve moved” cards you’ll be sending out soon.

If you are moving yourselfReserve a rental truck well in advance, avoiding weekends or the end of themonth, if possible. Sketch out a plan of action that includes drivingdirections, which rooms will be emptied first, and where furniture will beplaced in the new location.

Begin collecting suitable moving containers and packaging materials, suchas sturdy cartons of various sizes, paper and cloth cushioning forbreakables, strong tape, twine, a box cutter, and felt-tip markers. Pre-pack and label whatever you can. Number the boxes and write what’sinside and where it goes. Keep a master list of numbered boxes and theircontents.

If you are hiring professional moversYour moving cost will be based on the total weight of the items and thedistance they are being moved, plus the insurance coverage you buy. Foryour protection, get a binding cost estimate, in writing, from the movingrepresentative, and discuss damage and liability insurance. Agree on whatitems you will pack and what items the company will handle.

In both casesPrepare a special box for valuable and irreplaceable items such as jewelry, family photos, and legal, medical, and insurance documents. Place these inthe care of a family member or friend until after you move.

Talk to your kids and let them express their feelings before, during, andafter moving. Take them on a special tour of the new home, neighborhood, and school in advance of the move.

Days before & moving dayAssemble a moving day “kit” of items you will need as soon as you arrive atyour new home, including paper plates and plastic utensils, packaged snackitems, tools, toiletries, and clothing changes. Consider hiring a babysitter togive young family members exclusive attention on moving day. If possible, leave pets with a friend or family member.

Go over your moving action plan, eat a healthy meal, and get plenty ofsleep the night before you move. Be sure someone is posted at the new andold locations to meet the movers and keep an eye on unattendedbelongings. Collect all moving-related receipts and documents, and putthem in one, easily accessible place.

At your new home, consider setting up your children’s new rooms first, encouraging them to help with simple unpacking chores. Outfitbathrooms, make beds, and connect TVs and VCRs early, so you and yourfamily can clean up, wind down, and relax after an exhausting day.
