What Makes a Phone Smart?Smartphones! Apps! Data plans! Do you hear these terms often and wonder what they really mean? Here are some answers to these questions.
What is a smartphone?A smartphone is a device that lets you make telephone calls like a regular cell phone, but also has the features of a computer allowing you the capabilities of sending and receiving email and accessing the Internet.
What is an app?An application or “app” is the software you can download and install on your smartphone to customize how you are using it. There are apps to help you communicate, become better organized, keep in touch while on the go, stay up-to-date with news or weather, play games and so much more! Some apps must be purchased, but many are free of charge.
Why do I need a data plan?A data plan allows you to access the Internet directly with your smartphone. Cell phone service providers allow data uploads and downloads on their cellular network anywhere a cell phone signal is available. A variety of plan sizes are available to fit your needs.
Whether you are thinking about upgrading from a regular cell phone to a smartphone or considering purchasing your first phone, the benefits of a smartphone are endless since you customize your phone to work best for you!
NU-Telecom’s TechTrends Wireless offers a variety of smartphones and data plans, including an Unlimited Data Plan! Stop into your local NU-Telecom or TechTrends to see our selection of smartphones and other handsets.

Should I be worried about protecting my online reputation?
People are interested in your online reputation, and you should be too. Have you ever used a search engine to look yourself up? There’s a good chance others have, so it’s important for you to know what they’re seeing. Both what you share, and what others share online, matters. Once something negative is posted online, it is very difficult to have it removed. Searches could show unfavorable job reviews or comments and have a negative impact if you’re applying for a job, looking for credit, starting a new relationship, or wanting to volunteer.
Tools and tips that can help you maintain the best online reputation possible include:
Search Engine Optimization
Use a search engine to look up your name. What shows on the first page or two of search results are typically the links that mention you in a positive light. Getting those kinds of sites higher up on the search results list is called Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Services such as BrandYourself or Vizibility work to move positive links higher up in your search results and also offers ways to proactively promote yourself.
Google Alerts
Set up a Google Alert for your name so that Google will send you an email when there are new results, such as web pages, newspaper articles,

Don’t Get Phished
Phishing can happen when you visit a site that tricks you into giving your login information for your email or social media network and then spams all your contacts with messages intended to get personal information or money from them. Profile Protector is an app you use with Facebook and Twitter that will alert you if there’s some kind of suspicious activity going on in your account.

Facebook, scans all the activity in your account and warns you about when you’ve been too open with others. Alerts are activated by posting to Facebook using a third-party app, sharing personal information such as religion, political affiliation and relationship status, and questionable posts made by you or your friends.
Untag Yourself
Facebook now requires your permission for anyone to tag you in a photo, but this wasn’t always the case. PhotoBox! is a free app that lets you find, manage, add effects, share photos, browse tagged photos and remove unwanted tags.
Don’t forget about your kids too!
Monitor your child’s social network, get activity reports and monitor text messaging with uKnowKids. It even has a text lingo and slang translation engine.
Todd Windschitl of Springfield was the winner of the tablet given away by NU-Telecom at the end of February. Customers “liking” NU-Telecom on Facebook during the month of February were entered in a chance to win the drawing. Watch for more promotions and chances to win on Facebook.

Meet Our EmployeesGergana Todorova New Ulm
Hi, my name is Gergana Todorova and I am NU-Telecom’s Administrative Coordinator . I have been with the company for 10 years and work out of the New

My company gives me a sense of identity and pride, being itself an active contributor to the community of New Ulm in so many ways. When I am not at work, I enjoy spending time with my family. I also like to read, travel and stay involved in my community by volunteering for Junior Achievement and United Way.
