Deciding on a Community Project

What is the best way for your club to work toward a consensus on a suitable project? Here are some ideas:1. Vote on the greatest needs of the community2. Determine what is best for youths or the elderly3. Determine what would improve community or economic development

October is Vocational Service MonthPeople join Rotary clubs as proud representatives of their businesses or professions. Hence, all club members have an obligation to represent their vocations to fellow Rotarians and exemplify the spirit of Rotary in the workplace.

Many Rotarians give of their free time and of their expertise, which so often is a result of success in their vocation. Numerous are the doctors and nurses who help sick children, numerous are the engineers who help drill wells, numerous are the teachers who help in schools – just to mention a few.

And the practice goes back to the various vocations where it all began in 1905 – a handful of gentlemen of different vocations who came together to help others. That was the beginning of what is now Building Communities – Bridging Continents through Service Above Self.

The Rotary Club of Malone, New York has built a reputation out of its spaghetti dinners. "They always have a huge turnout and significant merchant support," notes Martha Weaver, a member of the club. "More than once, we have run out of spaghetti sauce." Developing signature activities that are visible in the community helps enhance the public image and awareness of Rotary, one of the priorities of the RI Strategic Plan. To encourage clubs to promote their own defining activities and to gather input from Rotarians, RI Vice President Thomas M. Thorfinnsonrecently moderated a discussion on Rotary International's official LinkedIn group.

Increasing Contributions to PolioPlusYour club has set a fundraising goal for PolioPlus in support of Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge. You would like to involve the community in this fundraising effort. How will you raise awareness and money for PolioPlusin your community? Here are ideas:1. The Rotary Club of Paonia, Colorado placed collection jars in 50 local businesses with these signs: "Please give 25 cents or more. Help Rotary wipe out polio. 60 cents vaccinates one child. Our goal: vaccinate 5,000 children." The signs also had color pictures of a child receiving an oral immunization and another who was suffering from polio. 2. One club planned an exciting fundraiser called Cruising for a Cause for PolioPlus. The cruise was open to everyone, and a percentage of the dollar amount raised wasl matched by the cruise line.

• Classification talks at club meetings• Tours of members’ businesses• Community career fairs and workshops• Mentor young people• Promote ethical behavior in business• Volunteer your vocation• Create a vocational award program

Extend Fellowship Beyond Club Meetings

1. Enjoy fellowship during service projects.

2.. Invite spouses and family to meetings or outings quarterly.

3. Hold fellowship trips quarterly.

4. Hold a Going Away or Welcome Back Party for youth exchange students or group study exchange members

5. Hold a joint club event

3. Rotary District 5910 is holding a Million Dollar Dinner to raise funds for Polio and other foundation programs. Rotarians and guests will enjoy a gormet dinner, dancing, and the opportuityto win fabulous auction items. RI Vice President Tom Thorfinnson will be the keynote speaker.
