What is the information strategy for?

Chapter 1

Good information is an important part of making surepeople stay healthy and get thebest care. It supports people toknow about care and treatmentchoices and the quality of services.

This strategy is guided by theHealth and Social Care Act andcovers public health and careand support across England.

The power of information

The focus is on improving accessto information and ensuring thesupport needed to use and understand it.

It is about making sure that everyone benefits equally frominformation about care services.

The Information Strategy aims to make the following things happen:

Information about me and my care

Change the way health andcare professionals and organisations use the informationin our own care records, makingsure that our right to have accessto information about us is supported.

Make sure that anyone whoneeds it gets support to accessand understand informationabout their health and care, sothat they have an equal sayand can be active in their owncare.

Making it easier to look at andshare your health and carerecords will support you to takecontrol of your own care andwork with professionals to makesure that there is ‘no decisionabout me without me’.

However, we want to make sure that your confidential information is kept safe and youcan say who can look at it.

New technologies will help us allto get more involved with howhealth and care services are run.

Things that will happen:

Health and care professionalsand organisations will be askedto make sure they keep clearrecords about your health care.

We will be able to see our GPrecords online by 2015. In timewe will be able to see otherrecords about our care online.

Commissioners and providers willbe expected to make sure thatanyone who needs it gets supportto access and understand information about their healthand care.

Information in our care recordswill be kept safe and confidential.

What this means for me:

By 2015 I will be able to see myGP records online. In time I willalso be able to see otherrecords about my care online.

I will get the support I need toaccess and understand information about my healthand care, so that I have anequal say and can be active inmy own health care.

It will be important that my information is only shared withthe people I choose and thosewho treat me medically andcare for me professionally.

Linking Information for joined up care

This is about recording and sharing information about ourhealth and care so that all thedifferent professionals who maylook after us can work togetherto give us better treatment andcare.

In time professionals will be ableto access bits of informationtaken from all of our records thatwill support them to find out thingslike who has access to services,what services need to improve,which treatments work and howservices can be improved to besafer and save money.

By 2015 improvements in theway that GPs and hospitalsrecord and share our recordsand test results will mean thatwe get treatment more quicklyand safely.

Information we give to anyhealth or care professional willbe recorded properly andshared safely so that we do nothave to keep telling people thesame thing again and again.

Our own unique NHS numberwill be used on all of our recordsso that they are kept together.

Professionals will be able to access any useful records aboutus online but it will be done in away that will keep our information safe and in oneplace.

Services across England willhave to use IT systems that canwork together so that informationcan be shared wherever youare.

Health and care professionalsmust be willing to work togetheron this to make it work.

What this means for me:

I will be able to get more usefulinformation about services andhow good they are. This will helpme to make better choices.

Wherever I go for my care services, from my GP, to a care home or A&E, professionals willbe able to get the informationthey need about me to makesure I get the best care.

The results of important tests willbe available electronically sothat professionals can find outhow to make me better quickerand I will not have to worry for solong.

Information from my carerecords that will not give awaywho I am will be used to makecare services and treatmentsbetter so that everyone’s healthis improved and money is spentwisely.

Good information for professionals will make the services they provide better. This will make it easier andquicker for me to explain whatcare and treatment the person I care for is getting.

I will make sure that I record theright information about any treatments and care I give assoon as possible after it is given. I will follow national standardsand link it to the personal NHSnumber.

By recording and sharing information better, I will know more about what my clientsneed and how well the care I am giving them is working.

Being able to find useful up-to-date information helps usto make choices about ourhealth. It is also important thatwe can give feedback aboutwhat we think of the servicesand care we get so that theycan be improved.

By making it easier for everyoneto get this information from onewebsite we can all begin tomake healthier lifestyle choicesfor ourselves.

This chapter looks at informationabout what we think about thecare we get, how well hospitalswork, what health problems weget and what works best to treatthem.

call for emergencies• 111 will be the number to

call if you need medical help or advice straight awaybut it is not life threatening

• An ‘online portal’ will link us to information we can trust

Opportunities for other providersto support the Government’score information by producinginformation that is accessible tomore people.

More specialist informationabout telling us what care andtreatment works best will help usto compare services.

More feedback will be collectedso that services can be madebetter.

The Government will work tomake it possible for all the information systems that differentorganisations use to work bettertogether so that information canbe shared.

They will be trained and supported to make sure the system works and health andcare professionals will be encouraged to work with them.

As well as investing in equipment,key health and care staff will be responsible for collecting andrecording all the information.

The Health and Social Care Information Centre will be an online place where all NHS, public health and social care information in England will bekept. Other organisations andthe public will be able to accessthis information to make healthand social care better.

Things that will happen:

The Information Centre will bewhere all collected feedbackand health and care information is kept and whereeverybody looks for information.

The Information Centre will provide a special secure servicethat allows health professionalsand scientists to get informationabout the health of the population. This will help them todevelop better treatments and medicines for the future.

As a patient or service user, as a carer, as a citizen and a member of the community

I will know more about my ownhealth and the quality and typeof services that I can get.

Whilst my personal details arekept private, information aboutmy general health and careand what I think about it will beshared and compared with information about everyone else.
