What is the Culinary Arts Program? Information The Culinary Arts program: • Offers more than a Certificate. It also offers an Associate in Science degree in Hospitality • Teaches sanitation and safety in the workplace as well as hospitality, food production, nutrition, and business mathematics For more than 30 years, Shasta College has been successfully preparing students for professional culinary careers. Shasta College’s Culinary Arts Program offers an in- depth, hands-on learning curriculum where students gain both knowledge and experience. Whether a student is interested in pursuing a Culinary Arts Certificate or Associate in Science Degree, Shasta College offers a program that will fit your needs. Students will learn what they need in preparation to enter into a culinary career. How long does it take to earn a degree?TheCulinaryArtsA.S.Degreerequiresatotalof60semesterunits.Generally,studentstaketwo(2)yearstocompleteallthecoursesrequiredforthedegreeprogram.

Are there additional costs for the program?Inadditiontotextbooks,CulinaryArtsstudentsarerequiredtopurchaseuniformsandtoolsforlaboratoryclasses.Someclasseshavematerialsfeesinadditiontoregistrationcosts.

What can I do with a culinary arts degree?Graduatesentertheculinaryfieldwellpreparedforentry-levelemployment,manyprogressingtomanagementpositions.SuccessfulShastaCollegeCulinaryArtsalumnicanbefoundinmanyfineestablishments.

InCalifornia,thehospitalityindustryisgrowingby4.9%eachyear(statisticsfrom:theNationalRestaurantAssociation)andopportunitieshaveneverbeenbetterforacareerinthisrewardingfield.

Therestaurantindustryisfilledwithsuccessstoriesofpeoplestartinginthedishroomandendingupintheboardroom,andofpeoplewhoachievedthe“AmericanDream”throughhardworkanddedication.Acornerstoneofcareers,community,andthenation’seconomy,restaurantsofferpeopleachancetobuildsuccessfulcareers.Infact,morethaneightintensalariedemployeesatrestaurantsstartedashourlystaff.

Startyourcareerin CulinaryWhat is the program of study?Forty-four(44)unitsarerequiredforacertificateandsixty(60)semesterunitsforanAssociateinSciencedegreeinHospitality.Theunitrequirementsincludecorecoursesandgeneraleducationcourses.

Studentswillstudysanitationandsafety,basicfoodproduction,stocks,soupsandsauces,andanintroductiontothehospitalityindustryduringthefirstsemesterintheprogram.Thesecondsemesterwillcoverbeveragemanagement,advancedfoods,menuplanningandcostanalysis,purchasing,andactualworksitelearning.

Duringthethirdsemester,thestudentwillstudydiningroomservice,baking,hospitalitysupervision,andtheartofgarde manger.

Studentsfinishtheirlastsemesterofstudywithcoursesinnutrition,businesscommunications,gourmetfoods,pastry,beveragemanagement,andbycompletinggeneraleducationrequirements.

Theworksitelearningaspectofboththecertificateanddegreeprogramoptionsisvitaltostudentsuccessonthejob.
