Asthma is a continual illness which is mainly categorized by the chronic attacks of breathlessness. It may cause chest tightness and coughing, which vary in severity and frequency.

The most common cause of asthma is inhalation of allergens and is diagnosed by the shortness of breath, dry, persistent cough and chest tightness. The two basic factors which contribute to asthma are hyper reactive bronchi and swelling of the airway passages.

They may occur 30 times or more an hour. Usually, normal breathing then starts again, sometimes with a choking sound or loud snort.

Although the condition is treatable, it often goes unrecognized. In most of the cases sleep apnea is diagnosed by your sleeping partner.

Sleep deprivation due to breathing pauses typically results in slow reflexes, daytime sleepiness and poor concentration.

Untreated sleep apnea triggers the risk of major health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, weight gain, stroke, diabetes, etc.

Obstructive sleep apnea: It is the most common type of sleep apnea and usually occurs when the soft tissue in the back of your throat relaxes during sleep and blocks the airway. It causes the person to snore loudly.

Central sleep apnea: The condition is not as common as obstructive sleep apnea and involves the central nervous system. It occurs when the brain fails to send signal to the muscles that control breathing. People with central sleep apnea don’t generally snore.

Complex sleep apnea: It is a combination of obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea oral appliances are acrylic and fit inside the mouth just like an athletic mouth guard. These sleep apnea dental appliances reduce the frequency of snoring and loudness to a great extent and are considered equally beneficial for all types of patients.

The two most common oral device types for sleep apnea are the mandibular advancement device and tongue retaining device.

Oral Appliances For Sleep Apnea:

Mandibular advancement devices (MAD): These are the most extensively used type of device and appears like a sports mouth guard. The device pushes the lower jaw forward and down slightly to keep the airway open.

Tongue retaining devices (TRD): These are a support/splint that holds the tongue in place to keep the airway open while you are in sleep.

These oral appliances prove to be highly effective for patients who are suffering from mild-to-moderate apnea. If you are planning to get an oral device for sleep apnea, get it fitted by a specialized dentist.
