guage and it should be taught as a language andnot as a literature. To speak English
To speak English a student is required to pro-duce sounds with proper stress and intonation.Speech occupies a unique position and it is thebase for all the language learning. Many lin-guists are of the view that language is primarilyspeech. This aim stands totally neglected in ourschools. We expect our students to talk fluentlyin English after 5-6 years of learning English.This ability to speak English is required in bigcities to communicate with persons from otherIndian states and to talk with foreigners.
To understand written English
We expect our students when they leave theschool, to be able to understand the writtenEnglish in books, magazines, news papers etc.It is also expected that he will be able to adoptEnglish as the medium of instruction and exam-ination in his studies. At present our studentsare not able to comprehend materials publishedin English. Recognition vocabulary of studentsshould be increased to enable them to readEnglish with comprehension.
To write English:
Writing English is in no way less than speak-ing English. In teaching English we aim toenable our students to write in English simpleletters, applications, description and accountsof events. Developing note - making and notetaking skills, paragraph writing, precis writing,composition writing are the basic skills to bedeveloped through teaching of writing.
III. Objectives Of Teaching EnglishAccording to the dictionary of education
objective is ''the end towards which a schoolsponsored activity is directed''. Effecting tangi-ble changes in pupils' behaviour at the end ofschooling is known as objective. Dr.B.S.Bloomhas defined educational objectives as thedesired goals or outcomes at which instructionis aimed. With regards to the teaching ofEnglish is concerned Thompson and Wyattrightly remarked that it is necessary that theIndian pupil should not only understand Englishwhen it is spoken or written, but also he shouldhimself be able to speak and written it.
Objectives of teaching English are framedkeeping in mind questions like what we teach,whom we teach, why we teach and how weteach. If the objective of teaching English is tohelp students pass examinations it becomes ashort term and immediate objective. This doesnot help the learners achieve proficiency inEnglish. If the students are to be trained toacquire proficiency in English and mastery inlanguage skills then the objective is to teachlanguage as a medium not as a subject. Thismove is a part of the World bank aided pro-ject. These schools are known as SUCCESSschools. SUCCESS - stands forStrengthening and Universalisation ofQuality and Access to secondary schools.
