What is Memorial Day?

• It is a special day to remember and

honor soldiers who died,

especially those who died

while fighting in a war

• Memorial Day is a

federal holiday.

• We also honor soldiers who are currently serving in the armed services:

♦Army ♦ Navy ♦Marines ♦Air Force

and the ♦Coast Guard.

When is Memorial Day?

• It is on the last Monday in May.

• This year 2014, it is on May 26th

• May is in the spring.

We celebrate…• Friends and relatives put flowers,

wreaths, and flags

on the graves of soldiers.

• Politicians give speeches• The President of the United States puts a wreath on

the Grave of the Unknown Soldier.

at the Arlington National Cemetery

• Families have picnics or barbecues.

♦Schools ♦ government offices,

♦ post offices ♦ some stores

are closed on Memorial Day.

• Memorial Day is the start of the summer recreational season in the United States.
