ITS ORIGINS• Gypsies began to migrate into Europe from the Middle East
and northern Africa
• Brought their own styles of music and dance
• Earned money by performing trades such as storytelling, using
herbal medicine, and doing other odd jobs
• Between 1869-1910, flamenco music developed rapidly in
music cafés called « cafés cantantes »
• Nowadays Flamenco is not a synonym of Gypsy Culture

What is a Tablao?
• Tablaos are typical venues for flamenco performances
• Dancers interprets the words and emotion of the singer through
their movements
• These include percussive footwork and hand, arm and body
movements
• The guitarist provides the accompaniment to the singer and
dancer, accentuating his or her vocal lines and/or melodies

Modern flamenco consists of three artistic elements:
• the singing (cante),
• the dance (baile) and
• the guitar (guitarra)
• In addition, there is often "palmas" or hand-clapping.
• It is similar to Jazz-there is a basic structure that one must follow, but at its
heart, it is an improvised form
