What is Fairtrade?

Fair trade aims to transform the lives of poor farmers in the developing world by enabling them to use their skills and resources to trade their way out of poverty.

It aims to improve equality amongst different groups and ensure that everyone receives a fair price for their produce.

Key elements of fair trade

Fair trade sets out to:• create opportunities for poor farmers (producers)• ensure trading is fair, both in terms of payment and prices • ensure that children are not being exploited • ensure there is no discrimination • ensure working conditions are safe.

What Fairtrade Foundation do?

As an organisation committed to fair trade, Fairtrade Foundation:

• focuses on trading with poor farmers, helping them develop skills and sustainable livelihoods.

• pays fair prices that cover the full cost of production and enable a living wage and other fair rewards to be earned by producers (farmers).

• provides credit when needed to allow orders to be fulfilled.

• encourages the fair treatment of all workers, ensuring good conditions in the workplace and throughout the supply chain.

• aims to build up long-term relationships, rather than looking for short-term commercial advantage.

How has Fairtrade impacted the livelihood of farmers?

Thanks to Fairtrade, farmers are paid a fair price for their crops and resources which ensures there is enough money to improve the lifestyle of the farmer’s families as well as the local community.

Some Fairtrade foods you will easily spot are: fruits (bananas, mangos, pineapples and grapefruits), coffee, tea and chocolate.  So as well as getting one of your 5 a Day, you’ll be helping farmers across the world.

in the UK?Did you know that yummy Cadbury Dairy Milk is actually the biggest purchaser of Fairtrade cocoa in the UK? Fairtrade certified Cadbury Dairy Milk has been in UK shops since September 2009 and was the first mainstream chocolate brand to become Fairtrade certified.

Since then Cadburys have been committed to making bigger and better Fairtrade strides by moving Cadbury Dairy Milk in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa to certification. They have also expanded their Fairtrade family to include other delicious favourites, such as Cadbury Drinking Chocolate, Cadbury Dairy Milk Buttons, Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocos and Cadbury Dairy Milk Bubbly.

This company sell over 237 million bars and bags of Fairtrade Cadbury Dairy Milk every year in the UK, buying a whopping 16,000 tonnes of Fairtrade certified cocoa a year from Kuapa Kokoo in Ghana. This has actually quadrupled the volume of Fairtrade cocoa coming from Ghana. Their purchases have meant that farmers have received over £6 million in Fairtrade premiums since 2009.
