It takes about 7 days for the egg to develop into an adult mosquito,

under optimal conditions.

The Aedes mosquito is characterised by white stripes on its

body and legs.

There is no drug orvaccine for dengue.

It breeds in stagnant water and thrives in the urban environment.

Dengue is transmitted by the female Aedes mosquito

Dengue is a vector-borne disease.

LIFE CYCLE OF MOSQUITOES

Page 3: WHAT IS DENGUE AND AEDES MOSQUITO?

There are 4 serotypes of dengue viruses spread by a female Aedes mosquito.

2

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF DENGUE?

HOW IS DENGUE TRANSMITTED

1. A female Aedes mosquito becomes infective after biting and sucking blood from an infected person carrying the virus in his/her blood.

3.

The previously infected person eventually recovers and becomes immune to the serotype that he/she was infected with.

2. 4.

The virus is then passed on to healthy people when the infective Aedes mosquito bites them.

However, the recovered person may be infected with the other 3 serotypes as he/ she does not have immunity against them.

All or a combination of these symptoms may be experienced.
