INTRODUCTION

Energy is the key factor in economic development and as we approach the dream year of 2020, when India will be a developed nation, our requirement of energy will increase rapidly. It is expected that approximately 669 million tones of Coal, 234 million tones of Crude oil and 223 million tones of firewood and 67 Billion cubic meters of Gas will be required at that time to meet the domestic demand.

It is unlikely that we can meet this requirement of firewood or coal if we have to stop the already deteriorating ecology. Denudation of forests and green cover has resulted in precarious imbalance, threatening the very root of our existence.

Developments in recent years have demonstrated our dependence on fossil fuel with their uncertainties of prices, availability, transportation and other difficulties. Reserves of fossil fuels are also limited, which has resulted in the universal recognition of the need to tap energy from non-conventional sources.

Among the non-conventional forms of energy, agricultural/industrial waste and municipal solid waste offers vast potential under Indian conditions, due to the wide spectrum of residues available in different Agro-climatic regions of the country. It is estimated that presently around 500 millions tones of agricultural and forest residues are generated annually and about 50 million tones of industrial waste consisting of Press mud, food & fruit processing waste, willow dust DGDS, spent wash and others.

Earlier most of these were dumped as waste or burnt to reduce fire hazards or used inefficiently. Handling and transportation of these materials is difficult due to their low bulk density and irregular sizes. These wastes are being converted after processing into high density fuel pellets/briquettes and be efficiently used to replace firewood, coal, liquid fuel and gas.

This Project is called “Biomass Briquetting Plant” and is simply a process of converting Agro waste and Forestry waste into biomass Briquettes / Bio-coal. The Biomass Briquetting is the best renewable source of energy for healthy environment and economy. It’s a complete Eco-friendly green energy project.

We all are well aware with the importance of Energy and its sources. Energy is the key factor in the economic development of every country. The demand of energy is increasing day by day and the supplies of sources are limited. It is globally red alert for fossil fuel like Petrol, Kerosene, Natural Gas, LPG, and Lignite etc. This has made a huge gap between the demand and supply of energy. Renewable energy is the ultimate solution, which can fill this gap. Most of advanced countries has adopted this concept, accepted this project and have retained their natural resources to get the solution of energy and fuels.

This renewable energy project is ideal for the agriculture based countries like India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Europe and African countries as there is a huge availability of agro-forestry waste. And Of course it is quite good for the industry based countries. It is the best project to generate revenue from agro-forestry waste, saving the Global environment and to produce green energy.

Main concept of this project is to produce the material as a bio-coal, which is made from the wastages. We cannot destroy the wastages totally. But we can use it with the help of Briquetting Plant and produce the Briquettes, which ultimately produce the energy. We can say that “To provide the energy in low cost is the main concept of the project.”

White CoalCONCEPT

The process of Pelletising is the physical transformation of the loose raw material into a compactly compressed unit. The form change results in a much higher specific density of the material which increases its combustion efficiency as compared to the loose material. Depending upon the type of waste binder may be added.

The following agro crop residues, agro industrial residues and other process by products can easily be converted into fuel pellets.

Variety of Biomass availability in IndiaAgro Industrial Residues

Husks Rice, Soya, Mustard, Coffee etc.Shells Coconut, Groundnut, Cotton etc.Seeds Castor, Rapeseed, Linseed, Soya bean etc.Others Bagasse, Bagasse Pith, Coir Pith, Saw Dust, Press Mud, Sludge etc.

Agro Crop ResiduesStraws Rice, Wheat, Jowar, Millet, Ragi, Barley, Gram, Khesri etc.Stalks Arhar, Bajra, Castor, Cotton, Jute, Maize, Mustard, Sunflower etc.

Spent Cobs Corn, Maize, Bajra, Ragi etc.Others Cane tops, Cane trash, Tea Plant wastes, Wood waste, Leaves, Needles and Husk

etc.PRODUCT

Pellet fuel is an ideal and ready substitute for Coal, Firewood and Lignite etc. and easily replaces these conventional fuels for heating, steam generation etc. The fuel offers numerous advantages mentioned below, other than consistent quality and economical prices.

High Calorific Value ranging between 3500-5000 kcal/kg depending on material.

Low Ash Content of 10-15 % as compared to 20-40 % in coal.

Non-Polluting as it does not emit any sulfur phosphorus & Nitrogen Oxide fumes and fly ash, eliminating the need for    expensive pollution control equipment.

Efficient as the fuel is ideally sized in 8-25 mm in dia and 25 to 50 mm in length.

Ease of handling & storage due to its size and as it can be packed in bags thereby reducing labor costs in handling,    sorting & breaking.

Page 9: What is Briquetting Plant

White CoalClean to handle and keeps the surrounding environment clean.

Availability of the fuel is better as it is usually produced near the consumption center, reducing cost of storage and    space.

Cheaper than coal as it utilize wastes and residues usually disposed off at NO or LOW cost.MARKET

Since biomass fuel pellets is a alternate source of energy its demand arises from shortage of conventional fuels and their escalating prices. Not only biomass fuel pellets are economical, convenient to use but being carbon neutral its use generates CER’s. Major thrust market area for fuel pellets are.

INDUSTRIAL BOILERSIncreasing cost of boiler fuel has generated demand for efficient boilers. Efficient boilers require designated fuel and fuel pellet being specified fuel in many cases.1) TRAVELLING GRATE BOILER: 15 – 20 MT/Hr boilers having traveling grate have combustion time of 8 – 10     minutes. Maxm size to combust is around 25 mm. 20 – 25 mm biomass pellet are ideal for such boilers. Efficiency is     higher and SPM generation negligible.2) FLUIDISED BED BOILERS: Under bed fired boiler require fuel size less than 6 mm and – 6 mm granules or 5mm     pellets are ideal for such boilers. For over fired boiler fuel size is 8 – 10 mm pellets.RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL HEATINGPellet fired heating system for residential and commercial area can easily replaced conventionally oil fired system with pellet fired heating system. Even direct fired system for residential area is quite common.GASIFICATIONDirect firing of biomass is not permissible in Europe and pressurized large capacity gasifiers are being installed. In these state of art gasifiers having pressurized system, Pellet are most desired fuel and 18-20mm pellet have good application.DOMESTIC COOKING STOVEAs compared to conventional wood burning stoves, improved pellet fired are three times more efficient. Flame temperature is high and pollution is in significant as compared to conventional stoves. Non-availability of firewood has made fuel-efficient pellet stove quite popular. Pelletised fuel is in good demand.

TECHNOLOGY

The concept of Pelletising is fairly old. Coal dust and other materials have been pelletised for a number of years using binders. However the binder less technology has been found to be the most economical and suited to the various biomass materials available in the country.

Jay Khodiyar Machine Tools has under taken various commercial projects in the country and now perfected the technology and machinery to suit the various bio materials available in the country. It has also exported machines to other countries of Asia, America and Africa.

MANUFACTURING PROCESS

Waste materials are tested for their chemical composition to decide on their suitability and to select a proper mix.

Sun dried materials containing approx. 10-15 % moisture is suitable for Pelletising. However if material has higher    moisture content it needs to be dried Page 9 of 11

Page 10: What is Briquetting Plant

White Coalbefore use.

Material is screened, chopped and ground to get the desired size and bulk density and is pneumatically transported    into storage bins. This helps in separation of the heavier & metallic particles and also unifying the moisture content in    the material. Air used is hot or wet as the case may be, for control of moisture.

Material from bin is discharged to the Pelletising machine through extraction and conditioning screw. Binder and   steam may be added. Pelletising is achieved at very low speed of pelletising.

Pellets are cooled by pellet cooler or ambient air and packed in bags.PLANT & MACHINERY

The plant and machinery required for Pelletising different material is as under:-

PELLET PRESS

CUTTER CHIPPER

GRINDERS

COOLING CONVEYOR

NON IBR BOILER

ELECTRICAL CONTROL PANEL

PELLETISING PRESSIt is a rotary machine in vertical construction; fixed flat horizontal die gives it stability in operation. Unique feature of pellet press as compared to other densification is, it is not size specific. Any Pellet mill can give pellet output of 8mm – 25 mm dia. Die of different thickness can be accommodated in same frame with no effect on stability.Vertical construction of pellet press, houses speed reduction unit at bottom of press. Three support vertical shaft is used to transmit power to pelletising rollers. 2-4 rollers depending upon size of unit, run at very slow speed on surface of fixed die and forces the material in die holes. In built lubrication is incorporated in small press while pressurized lubrication with optional cooling facility is provided in large units.Power from electrical drive motor is transmitted to pellet press by belting.HAMMER MILL GRINDERFor size reduction of incoming biomass and converting them ito granules, swing hammer grinder are used. Light hammer moving at high speed cut the straw/husk etc into granules. Hammer is provided with feeding screw, discharge screw and dust separation & filtering system.COOLING CONVEYORSFor cooling the incoming pellet at 80 – 850C, ambient air fans are used. Pellet travels on screen conveyor and Axial flow fan forces the air through pellets. Cooling of hot pellets increases the strength of pellet. Free moisture on pellet surface is reduced on cooling conveyors.NON IBR BOILERFor conditioning the incoming granular material low-pressure steam is generated in fire tube boilers. Pellet is used for giving the required thermal energy. Boiler has three compartments, water heating water boiling and steam compartments.ELECTRICAL CONTROL PANEL PELLET PLANT PL 750
