The Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Be my protector, O God, a mighty stronghold to save. For you are my rock, my stronghold! Lead me, guide me, for the sake of your name. (Cv. Psalm 30: 3-4).

T H E I N T R O D U C T O R Y R I T E S ENTRANCE HYMN Be My Protecting, Saving God ST. ANNE

PENITENTIAL ACT I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,

(and striking their breast, they say) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

CREED I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (all bow through “and became man”) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate

he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

A couple of months ago, I asked Deacon John Ruschiensky to do some research on marriage preparation programs. We are seeing an increase in the number of weddings being celebrated at the Cathedral and the program we were using didn’t seem to be as effective as we would like. In fact, part of our preparation program included a pre-marital inventory that I used when I was first

ordained! It was time for a change. This past week we reviewed the marriage preparation program provided by Dynamic Catholic which is a website providing all kinds of online Catholic content. Couples take an online inventory which is automatically sent to the priest or deacon who is leading the preparation. We will ordinarily be using the short video clips about various aspects of married life in three sessions. Depending on the needs of the couple, additional content is available as well. I encourage you to log on to www.DynamicCatholic.com and scroll through the various offerings. The founder of Dynamic Catholic is Matthew Kelly who started the site with a dream to help ordinary people discover the genius of Catholicism. The hope is to re-energize the Catholic Church in the United States through world-class resources that inspire people to discover the faith in ways that are amazing. The words “exciting”, “amazing” and “life-changing” are often associated with reviews of Dynamic Catholic. We decided to begin to use the new marriage preparation program immediately. I am hopeful that this new program will be a good tool in helping couples to have a loving, holy, and joyful marriage. Asking for the prayers of Our Lady of Lourdes, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ. Father Darrin Connall Rector

St. Bernadette Guild Lead Volunteer Opportunity for Corporal Works of Mercy

Our parish requires a lead for St. Bernadette's Guild which prepares and serves receptions following a Funeral Mass. This is a very spiritual, rewarding position which falls under the Church's teachings on the Corporal Works of Mercy - in giving of support, service and hospitality to the

bereaved family and friends who are experiencing the loss of a loved one. You will have the support of an experienced team to assist with shopping, preparation and serving. This position requires someone who is sensitive to the needs of a grieving family. This could be a ministry shared between two people. Please contact Darlene at the Parish office at 358 - 4290 or email [email protected] for more information.

Each year Pope Francis invites the entire Church to support the work and service of priests, religious and lay leaders who serve the world’s most vulnerable communities. Mission is at the heart of our Catholic faith, and our annual World Mission Collection joins our diocese and all Catholics of the world together as one community of faith to give generously to aid the Church

worldwide. This year’s collection is next weekend, February 22nd & 23rd. Please use the envelopes that you received in the mail to make your contribution to the World Missions Collection or send your support to the Diocese of Spokane.

During a break in the weather this past week, the roof on the Ribble Center was replaced. The north facing section was visibly worn with shingle edges lifting off the decking. Leaks were imminent. The Finance Council recommended using funds we have in the St. Joseph Account which is held by the Catholic Foundation for capital improvements at the Cathedral. These funds come from parishioners who left money through their estate planning for Cathedral maintenance. We are benefitting today from parishioners who have gone before us. Please consider remembering the Cathedral in your own estate planning. Your generosity will benefit future parishioners for generations to come.

Our parishioner Tim Rhodes recently passed away. Please pray for the repose of his soul.

Ash Wednesday

Next Wednesday, February 26th is Ash Wednesday. Masses & distribution of Ashes will be offered at 6:30 a.m., 12 Noon, and 5:30 p.m. and confessions will be heard at 1:00 p.m. Mark your calendars and plan on joining fellow parishioners at Mass as we begin the holy season of Lent.

Scriptural Reflection February 16, 2020

SIR 15:15-20; PS 119:1-2, 4-5, 17-18, 33-34; 1 COR 2:6-10; MT 5:17-37

Today’s readings challenge us to reflect on the true state of

our hearts as it relates to stewardship. Do we think of

stewardship as something we take care of once a year,

simply a matter of ticking off boxes on a commitment card

— or do we choose to embrace it as a spirituality and way of

life that allows us to grow in conformity to Christ every

day?

Our first reading, from the book of Sirach, teaches that our

good God has given us freedom to make this choice —

“Before man are life and death, good and evil, whichever he

chooses shall be given him.” The concept of stewardship

helps us to live out the fundamental choice to put God first.

Stewardship is meant to be embraced as a way of life a life that involves a continuous conversion

of heart.

In our Gospel passage, from Matthew, Jesus illustrates the difference between an external

observance of the law and a true conversion of heart, saying, “You have heard that it was said…

you shall not kill… But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to

judgment.” Our Lord is asking us not only for exterior acts, but for a true change of heart. In

stewardship terms, that means seeing everything as a gift from Him, to be used for His glory and

the good of others.

In the week ahead, let us examine the state of our hearts to ask ourselves if we have chosen to

allow stewardship to become a way of life for us. Only then we will experience its true depth and

heart-changing possibilities. The choice is ours.
