A Place Called Grateful As you venture in the store you might notice that many have gone straight from Halloween to Christmas decorations. What happen to celebrating Thanksgiving? Could it be that as a nation we are no longer thankful or grateful to God? We skip right over the heart and go straight to the hand out. We need to examine our individual lives and situation and acknowledge what we are thankful for. I am thankful for the opportunity to come into your life each month with the gifts that God has granted me. I am thankful for my family ,dysfunctional as it may be. We all have so much to be thankful and grateful for. Take 5 minutes and make a list. Do this visual exercise so that you can see exactly what you have been blessed with. You will be pleasantly surprised at what you write. Place the list on your fridge so when you gripe and complain you will be reminded of what you have to be thankful for. Thankfulness is a state of mind. We all should desire to live in a place called grateful. The houses in grateful are not grand but they serve the purpose. Perfection does not live in a

place called grateful. Critics and depression don’t live there either. In a place called Grateful hearts and hands are extended to God . Where are you living? Check out this site to create a thankful journal. . http://www.thankfulfor.com/

The 411 on Keratin Everyone in town is raging about the latest and greatest technique to control unruly frizzy hair. Its frizz busting, humidity fighting, curl releasing power has DFW’s top salons and their clients boasting about the results. Whether referred to as Brazilian smoothing, Brazilian blowout, or Keratin treatment, bottom line it’s referring to keratin smoothing treatments. This treatment makes everyday a good hair day! What is it? Keratin is a protein found naturally in your hair. It can fill in gaps in the hair cuticle that are cracked, dry, or damaged. Women that want to go from curly to straight or vice versa without making hair super straight or who desire that smooth, soft look with more body should invest in this treatment. It doesn’t discriminate, so anyone, any hair type can benefit - thick, fine, curly, straight, damaged or color treated. Taming your curls with the process of infusing keratin over a period of time will result in a healthier, well conditioned mane.

It’s unlike a relaxer or those Japanese straightening systems in that there is no permanent change in your hair’s structure. It doesn’t change the structure in the cortex of the hair in any way, it just coats the hair. The treatment will gradually wear off after about 2 to 4 months, so there is no obvious difference in the new hair and the hair that has been treated with keratin unlike chemical straightening. The formaldehyde factor A suspected carcinogen, formaldehyde is a colorless chemical compound with an irritating odor. Exposure to formaldehyde has been linked to health problems, including runny nose, sore throat, headache, itching, and irritated eyes.

The keratin treatment is mixed with varying levels of formaldehyde, applied to the hair, and then sealed in with the heat of a flat iron. The formaldehyde helps hold the keratin molecules together, which straightens your hair and keeps it that way. Unlike the original versions of the “Brazilian” treatment which contained dangerous levels of formaldehyde as high as 10%, the recent treatments contain lower levels or trace levels of the chemical. When inquiring or researching this treatment, don’t be fooled by formaldehyde-free products. These products actually contain formaldehyde derivatives with the same risks. Be sure to speak with your stylist about the safety and content of the treatment he or she uses. The salon visit Make sure to arrive at the salon with your hair in its natural state, free from product. The stylist will shampoo your hair with a clarifying shampoo, towel dry and blow dry your hair straight. Then the keratin solution is applied in very small sections with a tint brush until the entire head is covered. You sit for a period of time, usually about 20 to 30 minutes. Hair is blow dried again, with the keratin, and then straightened with a flat iron in small sections to seal the keratin. The process can range from an hour to two or more depending on your hair texture and

length. You can expect to pay an average of $250 - $300 for this “miracle” treatment. Aftercare Consult with your stylist for proper at-home care instructions and recommended products. Instructions can vary by brands. Some brands specify you cannot shampoo your hair for about 72 hours nor clip it, ponytail it or tuck it to give the treatment time to set in, while others may allow shampooing the very next day. Be sure to use a sulfate-free shampoo to avoid prematurely stripping the treatment from your hair. After all is said and done enjoy your new found freedom with soft, smooth strands that dries in half the time. Kendra Timmons Blessing Beauty Center

Give Thanks for All Things

I WILL bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually

be in my mouth. PSALM 34:1

Thank God that we are able to see another Thanksgiving!

Some of us have been through some hard times this year, but

we are still hear and standing on the promises of God!

Trusting and believing! We are victorious! Thanksgiving is

more about eating good food at the table. It's about being

thankful for all things! Family & friends. Loving others. Thank

God that you have someone to celebrate with. Many have

lost love ones. They need your support. Some people are all

alone. Invite someone, other than your regular family &

friends, over for Thanksgiving. Show compassion for others in

need.

I have learned to be so.... thankful for the little things! The

small stuff, that appears to be, so little in our lives is really the

most important things of all! Without the little

things.............there will not be a big thing! Before you started

walking you had to, roll, creep and crawl!

In October 2011, my husband and I experience not having any

power, heat or hot water in our home for 3 1/2 days because

of our first snow storm here in NJ. Whew! ... It was all about

survival and trusting in God! During the very cold, days and

nights, my neighbors, family, and I bond closer together!

Neighbors were checking homes and helping one another.

Giving out candles and food. That was the good that came

out of the bad! It created unity in our neighborhood. God has

a way of turning the bad into the good!

When the power went out, there was not much we could do.

Our daily routine was interrupted! The Luxuries of life were

gone! My husband was really upset because, he could not

see the football game! I just wanted to have heat and for

things get back to normal! When the electricity can back on,

we were so happy that we could now, move around a warm

home, shower, keep food in the fridge and watch TV! Thank

you Jesus! Sometimes we take the little things in our lives for

granted! Sometimes, you will never miss a good thing until

you lose it!

Electricity is important! With electricity, we become energize,

full of life, excitement, moving in action! Without it our lives

are limited. You will not have heat, hot water.

8

Page 9: What Every Fat Girl Wants Magazine Nov Vol 5

The food goes bad in the refrigerator, TV's and computers are

down, and you cannot charge up the cell phones to

communicate. Oh......my! We lack excitement in our lives!

Grownups are bored. The children are driving you crazy, not

knowing what to do with them! This is...... the way things are, in

2011!

I thought about how, Jesus is like electricity... to me! Without

HIM I'm living, doing my thing, but I'm not really living!

Something was........... missing from my life! I was missing that

relationship with God! The energy & power!

With Jesus, He has given me new life! I now have energy from

God, love, peace, in the good and the bad! He gives you joy,

strength and power! God is......... the power! He is the power

that I need!! When I'm in the storm or out of the storm! I'm

thankful for all He's done for me! Hallelujah! God can do the

same for you!

If God has never done anything for, then you do not have

anything to be thankful about! Praise is thanking God for all that

He has done! We all have something........... To be thankful for!

It's how we get from A to Z! How I got up this morning from sun-

up to sun-down! He watched over us all night long! God has kept

me safe from all hurt harm and danger! Again I can see a new

day! A new beginning! Food on my table! Clothes to wear!

Shoes on my feet! Family and friends! Don't forget the little

things. Thanksgiving is every day!

If God has woke you up, and allowed you to see this new day,

you have something to thank God for! Praise God............. for all

that He has done! He is the Master with the master plan! Trust

God and give thanks on Thanksgiving Day, with your love ones

and friends! Give Him thanks everyday! Be thankful for the all

things! They are wonderful things! Every day is Thanksgiving!

Have a wonderful thanksgiving this year!

O GIVE thanks unto the LORD; call upon his name: make known

his deeds among the people. PSALM 105

1Husbands need to feel respected and need to know

that their wives respect them both privately and publicly.

Men thrive when they know that their wives trust them,

admire them, and believe in them. .

2. When a Husband is disrespected by his wife he

becomes angry with his wife, he may not come out and

say, “You’re disrespecting me!” But, there is a good

likelihood that he is feeling stung by something his wife has

done which he considers disrespectful and humiliating.

3. Men feel the burden of being the provider for their

family it doesn’t matter how much or little a man makes, or

whether or not his wife makes more or less money in her

career. Men simply bear the emotional burden of providing

for their family. Men

are simply wired with this burden. As such, it is never far

from their minds and can result in the feeling of

being trapped.

While wives cannot release their husbands from this

burden, they can relieve it through a healthy dose of

appreciation, encouragement, and support.

4. Sex means more than sex. When men feel their wives

desire them sexually, it has a profound effect on the rest of

their lives. It gives them an increasing sense of confidence

and well-being that carries over into every other area of his

life. The flipside of this coin also carries a profoundly

negative affect. When a husband feels rejected sexually,

he not only feels his wife is rejecting him physically, but

that she is somehow rejecting his life as a husband,

provider, and man. This is why making sex a priority in

marriage is so incredibly important!

5. Men struggle with visual temptation. This doesn’t

just mean the guys with wandering eyes. Even the most

godly husband cannot avoid noticing a woman who

dresses in a way that draws attention to her body. Even if it

is just a glance, these visual images are stored away in the

male brain as a sort of “visual rolodex” that will reappear

without any warning. Men can choose whether to dwell on

these images and memories or dismiss them, but they

can’t control when these images appear.

6. Men care about their wife’s appearance. This isn’t

saying that all men want their wives to look like the latest

supermodel. What men really want is to know that their

wives are making an effort to take care of themselves (and

not letting themselves go) because it matters to them (the

husbands!). Husbands appreciate the efforts their wives

make to maintain their attractiveness.

Budget Basics

A budget is an important piece of any person’s financial

well being. You want to make sure you earn more than

you spend. High-income and low-income workers alike

must manage their money. A balanced budget will aid

you in reaching your financial goals.

What does a balanced budget mean? A budget is a plan

for spending or saving money received within a time

frame. Balanced means you are spending your money

appropriately and spending less than you earn. So, how

do you get to a balanced budget? The following is a list

of basic budget categories and the suggested percentage

to dedicate to each category.

•Savings – 10%

This can be savings for retirement,

emergencies, large purchases, rainy day funds,

etc

•Charitable Giving – 5%

•Housing – 25%

•Transportation – 15%

•Food/Household supplies – 15%

•Entertainment – 10%

•Clothing – 5%

•Other expenses – 15%

This will include such things as electricity, gas,

phone, TV, internet, medical expenses, credit

cards, and insurance.

Each of these should be calculated by using your net

income. Net income is how much of your earnings you

actually have access to after taxes are taken out of your

paycheck.

Every person or household is different, and therefore the

categories may look a little different.

Now comes the hard part; keeping track of where your

money goes. There is only way to do this. Save your

receipts! Now, I know this seems very tedious, but it will

give you a true picture of exactly where your money is

going. You will probably be very surprised to see exactly

where your money is going. Keep a spreadsheet of your

expenses, or just use the old-fashioned paper and pencil,

and jot down how much money you have spent in each

category. How close to the suggestions are you? Where

can you make adjustments?

Money-zine.com has some excellent budgeting

worksheets to help you get on track.

Anther great tool is mint.com.

So we're Divorced

SO we're divorced, I am no longer sad about it, I realize we made a move before we thought about it. I let the smell of your cologne, the width of your shoulders and the size of your biceps, cause me to misstep. But I still love you and always will, we share the children made in love, truly gifts from God Above. I will not use them as a lever to make me look clever,

I will teach them that they are loved by mother and father

I will teach them to respect you and love you forever and ever. And when we have to be in the presence of each other- because we most certainly will, any hard feelings that may surface,

I promise to keep still.

So we're divorced and we have gone our separate ways,

I will do my best to remember more of the good days than the bad,

because there was I time, I thought you were the

best I could ever have. So we're divorced and we have both moved on,

I'm sorry we could not make it, but so glad we stopped trying to fake it.

We will raise the children as loving Parents should,

uplifting and encouraging one another for the children’s good.

So we're divorced now and I can finally say, I am more than okay.

May God order your steps according to his will, I pray that he will bless you and keep you,

because I loved you then and I Love you still………

Last month, we learned a little bit about the different ways a team can score points in a football game. This month, I want to help you understand the different positions of a football team. There are three different roles each team must have. This is often referred to as ‘sides’. You may hear the phrase, “there are three sides to a football game.” The offense, the defense, and special teams are those three sides. •The offense is the team that currently has the ball; the object for them is to get the ball into their opponent’s end zone, which would result in a score. •The defense is the team that tries to stop the offense from scoring. •Special teams are on the field during any kick plays such as kick-offs, punt returns, field goal attempts, and on-side kicks (which is a rare, special type of kick-off). There are 11 players on offense and 11 players on defense on the field at one time. When special teams are on the field, still one team is offense and

one team defense. Each NFL team dresses 53 players. A starter is a player who starts the game on offense or defense. Each position has one, or maybe several, back up players that are dressed, in case of injury, fatigue, or specialists. In this issue, you will learn more about the basic positions of the offense. Next issue, you will learn more about the defensive and special teams positions.

20

Page 21: What Every Fat Girl Wants Magazine Nov Vol 5

The offense has 7 different positions. There could be different ways the players line up (position themselves), but I am going to describe the most basic of each position. The offensive line (aka O-line) – their primary job is to block the defenders. The O-line typically does not handle the ball. •Center (C) – This player hands the ball (called a hike) to the quarterback, then immediately starts to block. •Guard (G) – One guard is on either side of the Center. •Tackle (T) – There is a tackle on the outside of each Guard. The backs and receivers are the players that handle the ball. •Quarterback (QB) – This player receives the ball from the center (called a snap), he is lined up behind the center, and then attempts to move the ball down the field. The QB has 3 choices to advance the ball. He can throw the ball to a receiver, hand the ball to a running back, or he can try to advance the ball himself. •Running Back (RB) – Running backs are lined up behind the O-Line. The quarterback can either

•hand the ball for •the back to run with, or the back may catch the ball also. There are a few different kinds of running backs, but the two that are seen the most are a tailback (aka halfback) and a fullback. The tailback is most often used during plays. The fullback is usually larger than the tailback, and most often is used as a blocker. Their exact position on the field varies, depending on the play. •Tight End (TE) – Tight Ends line up next to the Tackles. They are multiple use players as they can either catch the ball or be additional blockers (usually on running plays). •Wide Receiver (WR) – Wide receivers line up on the outside of the tackle or tight end, depending on how the play is set up. They are usually lined up close to the sideline. Their primary job is to run and then catch the ball, although they may also be asked to block defenders. Sara Hughes 21

How to Become a Savvy Saver During these difficult economic times, you may be wondering

how you can save any money when you're barely coming up

with enough money to pay the bills. It's important to be open

to all kinds of ideas when it comes to saving money. If

you're willing to try anything to save money, your confidence

will soar.

Consider these ideas to help you set aside funds for

savings and investments:

•When it comes to saving, attitude is everything. What you

think and feel about saving matters.

•If you feel incredibly overwhelmed or pressured about saving,

chances are that you'll avoid doing it.

•However, if you embrace the concept of saving and get

behind the idea that you're paying yourself for the future

when you save, you'll be quite excited about saving every

payday and demonstrating some real saving savvy.

•Avoid convincing yourself that you "can't save because there's

just no money left after paying the bills." Instead, tell yourself

you will save something every week.

•In general, it's best to focus on positives and an "I can do it"

attitude for saving money.

•Make a conscious decision to save money. Write this down

and put it on a sticky note on your bathroom mirror: "I will save

some money today." Then do it.

•Sometime each day, put some money aside for your savings,

no matter how small the amount may be. Maybe you'll save

your change or maybe you'll skip a cup of coffee or soda, but

you will set something aside.

•Deposit your daily savings into an account each week.

•If you must, start small. Even saving $5 or $10 per week

is something. It signifies a commitment on your part to save.

•It shows that you believe saving is important and that you can,

in fact, succeed at it.

•Starting small to work toward a larger goal shows you have

saving savvy.

22

Page 23: What Every Fat Girl Wants Magazine Nov Vol 5

Use coupons every single week at the grocery store. You can find coupons in newspapers, grocery store flyers, and all over the internet. Your grocery receipt lists at the bottom how much you saved with coupons. Take that amount of cash out of your purse and place it in an envelope for the bank. Whether it's fifty cents or $4.50, it's money you saved. Place your grocery savings into the bank where it will do some real good. Now that is saving savvy.

Learn from others who demonstrate saving savvy. Interview friends or family members who show they know how to manage money. Do you have a sister who's an avid saver? A friend who always pays cash for his cars? Ask to sit down with them and gather some of their saving savvy tips. When did they start saving? Where did they learn about saving money? What tips for "beginners" do your saving savvy friends have to share with you? Keep your mind open and pen in hand. Write down their tips. Then, decide which tips will work for you and apply them in your life. Keep a positive attitude and make a personal commitment to save. Set a weekly minimum savings goal and learn from the savvy savers you know. Practicing savvy saving will lead you to a brighter future. Lorene Collier Purcy

Set a minimum weekly savings goal and promise yourself to exceed it. If you're starting small, make an effort to exceed your minimum amount. So, if you establish a weekly minimum goal of $7, anything over that amount is "gravy." Read on to see where you can find some "gravy."
