Opportunities abound to play with and

practice literacy skills. Whether it is

talking with your kids about what

makes you laugh, walking around the

neighborhood and looking at all the

signs, or reading books, telling jokes

and trying out tongue twisters, it all

adds up to the joy of learning to read

and write!

The best way for kids to learn to read

and write, and to love doing so, is to

use everyday opportunities to

introduce, practice, and play with

these skills. This book is filled with

playful games and ideas that give

kids the skills they need to learn to

read and write. Use them at home, at

school, and when you are on the go.

Remember to emphasize the fun!

literacy skills, developed the games in

this book. The Between the Lions

television program is produced by

WGBH Boston, Sirius Thinking, Ltd.,

and Mississippi Public Broadcasting

and features a lion family living in a

public library. The family includes

parents Theo and Cleo and their

cubs, Lionel and Leona. For more

information about the characters or to

find out when the show airs in your

area, go to pbskids.org/lions.

Now, let the fun (and learning) begin!

After you finish playing the games, check out the ideas in the back of this book for more ways to help children become successful

readers.

Each game has the following

components:

Age: This is a general guideline. You

know your child’s skills and abilities,

in addition to what he or she

enjoys. Keep in mind that a three-

year-old and a ten-year-old may or

may not enjoy the same game.

The number of players needed to

play the game: “Players” can be

kids or adults. So if the game

requires two or more players, the

two players can be one kid and

one adult.

A Great Way to…: Although these

games are designed to be fun for

kids to play, each game also has a

significant educational component.

The skills that each game develops

are listed in the “A Great Way to…”

section. (On the following pages is

a chart that lists and describes the

literacy skills that all kids need to

be successful readers and writers.)

26 cubs instead of just two! You

need to give each cub a name that

begins with a different letter of the

alphabet.

Using the 26 letters of the

alphabet, think of a name for each

cub. You will end up with a list of

26 different names. Some letters,

like X and Y, are really tough so

we’ll get you started—Xavier, Yogi,
