Introduction

Swansea Council has to make some difficult decisions about how it spends its money.

We don’t have enough money to do all the things we want.

We need to reduce the amount of money that we spend on some things.

Before we make any decisions we want to know what you think.

Please read through this document and then tell us what you think by answering the questions that start on page 8.

Page 4: What do you think? · think are important. We will have to reduce spending on some important services, or find new ways to raise the money we need. We will have to make some difficult

Our budget challenge The budget is where we work out:

• How much money we have to spend

• How we plan to spend the money

How we get our money

Swansea Council gets money from:

• People and businesses paying council tax

• Money from the Government

The money that we have got from the government has gone down.

Over the last 3 years the government has given us £60 million less than we had before.

This year we will be getting £24 million less than we want.

4

Page 5: What do you think? · think are important. We will have to reduce spending on some important services, or find new ways to raise the money we need. We will have to make some difficult

How we spend our money

The council spends money providing services to people in Swansea.

These services include:

• Schools and colleges

• Collecting waste and recycling

• Looking after the roads

• Supporting people who are old or vulnerable to live independently

• Keeping children safe

• Money towards the cost of buses

• Looking after the environment

• Sports centres

Spending our money better

Over the last few years we have worked hard to spend our money better.

We have been making sure that we only spend money on things that are really important.

We have looked at ways that we can do more things with less money.

you About

The challenge now

Next year we will not have enough money to spend on the things that we think are important.

We will have to reduce spending on some important services, or find new ways to raise the money we need.

We will have to make some difficult decisions. Please help us and tell us what you think by answering the questions on the next pages.

Your answers will help us when we make the final decisions.
