The plan

• Based on speed and surprise the Germans invented the Schlieffen Plan to prevent having to fight a war on both sides (a war on two fronts)

• Idea was for Germany to knock France out of WW1 and avoid fighting a war on 2 fronts.

• Avoid heavy French defences by going through Belgium (Smash Paris).

• Germany believed it would take Russia at least 6 weeks to mobilize and by then France would have fallen!

Why it failedWhy it failed

• Germans went through Holland as well as Belgium and Britain has sworn to protect Belgium

• Russia mobilized in 3 weeks and not in 6– using trains to transport soldiers

• French used taxi’s to transport their troops to Marne to fight the Germans

• Germans marched on foot = tired, running out of supplies

By the end of 1914 – stalemate!

1. Line up with half the class against one wall and the other half against the other

2. Imagine you have guns and machine guns and canons on each side

3. Take it in turns to make an attack but never quite reach the enemy before having to retreat!

4. This is called stalemate!

5. What can you do to protect yourselves?

6. Dig a big ditch on each side and hide in it to protect yourself- you are now fighting in the trenches (big ditches!)
