Mise-en-scene: Analysing “I Need Your Love” By Ellie Goulding and Calvin Harris:Location – Natural, multiple settings e.g. the beach and a restaurant. Very simplistic in terms of props and setting. E.g. the use of drinks when in the restaurant. Lighting – Lighting appears very natural – relies heavily on natural light. Costume – Casual clothing such as a shirt, shorts and boots. Adds a sense of realism to the video. Very natural makeup.

Relation to Coursework…

• There are some MES elements within the “I need your love” video which we hope to incorporate into our video. For instance, we hope to rely heavily on natural settings such as the outdoors and a bedroom in order to add a sense of realism to our video. Just like Ellie Goulding’s video, we aim for our artist to be dressed very casually with limited make-up like Ellie in order to emphasise her purity to the audience.

Camera Work: Analysing “Way in the World” By Nina Nesbitt:The video consists of 75% of mid-shots and close-up of Nina and for the remaining shots, concentrates on the MES (shows a group of friends at the seaside)The cuts between Nina to the MES ensures the video is visually engaging for the audience.There is a balance between Nina’s performance and telling a loose narrative.

Relation to Coursework…

• The camera work in “Way in the World” is exactly what we wish to incorporate into our video. We feel that there is a strong emphasis on mid-shots and close-ups which are essential in promoting our artist. We also feel that a loose narrative is essential as it is relevant to our genre and keeps the audience engaged.

Sound: Analysing “Rabbit Heart – Raise It Up” By Florence and the Machine:

There is the use of instruments such as a harp which adds to the rhythm of the song as well as contributing to the MES. Precise lip-syncing is essential in making the video appear professional.

Relation to Coursework…

•We are hoping to use a guitar in our music video which feel is relevant to our music video and adds to the camp-fire MES we are trying to create. We also feel that the introduction of an instrument will add to the musicality of the video.

Editing: Analysing “Ho-Hey” By the LumineersThere is examples of match on action which adds different perspectives to the video and makes it visually engaging for the audience. There are constantly match cuts however these are more subtle and we feel they are used more for continuity.The camera is constantly moving which adds to the energy of the video.

Relation to Coursework…

•We are hoping to use match on action within our video in order to add variety to our video.•We also feel that match cuts are necessary to keep the flow of the video. • In “Ho-Hey” , we particularly like the match on action of the artist walking forward and we feel we could do something like this.

Symbolism: Analysing “Little Talks” By Of Monsters And Men:

The music video and lyrics symbolise a relationship. The video is very ambiguous within the abstract theme of a relationship and this simple and broad concept allows the viewer to make their own inferences about what is happening. We feel this is done purposefully for the audience to engage deeper into the text.

Relation to Coursework…

• We like the idea of having a broad theme like “Little Talks”, allowing the viewer to read into the video.• Our music video is going to

be the embodiment of the future and consequently shows our artist moving on from her past and looking to the new chapter in her life.• Symbolism – The transition

from the past to the future.
