About GATE 2012:

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all India examination administered and conductedjointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the NationalCoordination Board - GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development

(MHRD), Government of India.

The objective of GATE Exam is to identify meritorious and motivated candidates for admission to PostGraduate Programmes in Engineering, Technology and Architecture at the National level. To serve as

benchmark for normalisation of the Undergraduate Engineering Education in the country is the mainObjectives of GATE Exam.

GATE Exam is a gateway to get admission into post graduate programmes like M.Tech, M.E, M.S or PhD inTechnical Institutes such as IISc Bangalore, IITs, NITs, University colleges and Private EngineeringColleges.

Qualified candidates in GATE are also eligible for the award of Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR

Laboratories. Top PSUs (BHEL, BARC, IOCL, Power grid) prescribe GATE qualification as a requirementfor applying to the post of a Scientist/Engineer.

GATE exam has always been looked as a bench mark in terms of the quality of the question paper,concept and execution and served as a motivator for the higher education in the country. It wont beunfair to say GATE exam is quite a unique exam in the country, in terms of content, quality andapplication.

GATE12 had a total of 65 questions totalling 100 marks.

After GATE what?

Subsequent to the GATE exam, even before the results are declared, the student is faced with another difficultyregarding the admission process of various colleges. Each department of each college has a different selection

procedure which often creates confusion and indecisiveness in the mind of the aspirant. For example, the MEprogram at the IISc has direct admission whereas the M.Tech. Program has a written test followed by an

interview and the MS program has only an interview. Hence a candidate has to prepare for all processesthoroughly. Also, one has to apply to each department separately since there is no common counseling

procedure. Hence each candidate has to judiciously select departments where he/she has the best chance ofgetting admission, given his GATE rank. A double digit rank (i.e. rank below 100) would generally pose no

problems as it would guarantee a seat in either the IISc or IIT (except few very specializedbranches). Butif you have secured a rank above 100, the options gets confusing, especially while choosing thecombination of institute and specialization and also in cases of inter disciplinary admissions. The following information provides a basic idea about the institutes and their admission processes. We haveclassified the institutes/colleges into 7 groups, with Group I being the most desired/preferred.

Group I

IISc (Indian Institute of Science), Bangalore

IISc has three different programs ME, M.Tech and MS across various disciplines. ME/M.Tech programs arethe most desired and are more industry oriented while the MS programs are more research oriented. Also, astudent has the option of stretching the MS program by 6 months, which is not possible for the ME/ M. Techprograms. There is no difference between the ME and M.Tech programs except for the fact that ME programsare offered in the traditional departments/disciplines while the M.Tech courses are offered in the morecontemporary disciplines. Also, the admission to ME programs is based only on the GATE score while theadmission to M.Tech and MS programs is based on a written test/interview.

Who should applyAs a general rule - ME Courses: those with AIR < 100, MS Courses: those with AIR < 1200.

50(AIR-50) can almost guarantee a seat in ME Course.

MTECH: - Admission to this program is based on the performance in test and interview conducted byrespective department. Center of Electronic Design and Technology (CEDT) and Computational Science

department offer MTech Course. A rank of 400- 500 in EC/CS/EE can be said safe range for getting the call forCEDT Course whereas rank in the range of 80-90 is considered to be safe for getting call from ComputationalScience department.

Some of the departments and interdisciplinary groups offer direct admission to the limited number of candidates

solely based on higher GATE percentile. Candidates, who are offered direct admission, have to confirm theadmission by paying the fees and submitting the acceptance letter. However, such candidate will have option

for not to accept the direct admission offer in given specializations but to appear for written test/interview indiscipline of one's higher choice(s).

Seats remain vacant after Direct Admission; will be filled up through written test/interview. Each candidate cansubmit only One Application Form.

The institute has following modes of admission process: -

INSTITUTE TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIP (TA)

Candidates are selected through the following modes.(i) Direct Admissions based on valid GATE score.

(ii) Valid GATE score and Performance in Test/Interview.

The students joining the program under this category will be considered for Teaching Assistantships of Rs. 5,000/-per month. Candidates joining under this category have to complete the M.Tech. Programme in two years.

Institute Research Assistantship (RA)

Candidate to this category will be admitted subject to:

(i) Valid GATE score.(ii) Performance in Written Test/Interview.

The students joining the program under this category will be considered for Research Assistantships of Rs. 6,000/-per month. Candidates joining under this category have to complete the MTech. 1.Test/interview: -Candidates must have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 6.75 on a 10-point scaleor equivalent 60% marks in aggregate (of all the years / semesters of the qualifying examination)

wherever marks are awarded and who have qualified GATE (for full time) with a valid score in

the case of MTech. And M.S. (Research) Programs and CEED with a valid score in the case ofM.Des. in Industrial Design Programme.

2.Direct Admission (Without Test/Interview): -Candidates seeking direct admission should have minimum 75 % marks in aggregate (of all theyears/semesters) (or 8.5 CGPA).
