SCIENCE DAY POEM FROM GROUP 9 At RPS we love investigating Science, Some activities involved a household appliance. On science day we had experiments-galore, Elephant’s toothpaste, whirligigs, quicksand and more. There were groups such as Molecules and Electricity, Circuits, Energy and Gravity. Each group visited four different classes, In some of them we needed our safety glasses. Some activities were gross and sticky, Others were disgusting, frustrating or tricky. Some experiments were physical or chemical, But all were equally sensational. At the end of the day we shared our creations, All students at RPS are science-sensations!

BOOK WEEK POEM FROM GROUP 9

At RPS we have been doing some book exploration, Because books are cause for celebration. Book activity day is a fun way to learn, So we moved into our groups without concern. Nonie the Pony, The Lorax, Cleo and the stone lion, If you missed out, you would have been cryin’! Then came the spectacular dress up parade, Costumes were creative, unique and even home-made. On Friday we bring a book that’s close to our heart, To share with our friends, these true works of art. Book week is always a lot of great fun, But it’s finished for this year and we’re sad that it’s done.

Ride2school August 2015

Walking to School How our children travel to school can be a hot topic for discussion. Commuters grumble about the increase in traffic during the hours of the “school run”. Residents living near schools can find their neighbourhoods choked with traffic and noise at the beginning and end of the school day. And parents are deeply concerned about the safety of their children, as well as getting them to school and themselves to work on time.

Why walk to school? There are many benefits. Here are just some of them:

1. Fitness and health

Most of us are very aware that childhood obesity is rising fast. Children need at least an hour of physical activity

per day, and walking to school is a great way to get some of that exercise.

There are also concerns about the level of pollution that children are exposed to sitting inside cars in congested or

slow moving traffic. When planning your walking journey to school, it may well be possible to find a route which

is quiet or traffic-free, and walking through green spaces such as parks can make you feel calmer and happier.

2. Concentration at school

Evidence shows that children who are physically active on the way to school burn off some of their excess energy

and are more able to settle down and focus well in lessons.

3. Road safety skills

Good habits learned young are learned well. Teaching your child to walk safely to school will stand them in good

stead for the rest of their life.

4. Socialising and independence

If you walk to school with a group of friends and parents you will have extra time in the day to build friendships

and feel comfortable around other people. Older students need time to themselves therefore walking home can be a

great time to think, relax, and mull over their day.

The winner of the Active Traveller Award with 70% of students walking or riding to school for the month of August was Group 10 - Year 3 and 4. Congratulations everybody! Did your class make the Top 5? 1. Group 10 with 70% 2. Group 4 with 67% 3. Group 2 with 65% 4. Group 14 with 64% 5. Group 11 with 55% We have some new groups that have entered the chart this month and some who have made their first debut. From 5th position last month Group 10 managed to storm up the ladder to first position. What an effort! The mornings were very cold in August and it appeared that many parents decided to drive their children to school on this particular morning and this is why our percentages have slightly dropped in some areas compared to July last month. Bike/Scooter 11% Public Transport 1% Walking 41% Private Car 48% An excellent effort by Group 14 who held their position consecutively for four months. However our Year 5 and 6 students from Groups 12, 13 and 14 do tend to walk to school each morning very carefully. They sometimes walk with their younger siblings and have a greater responsibility to always model the correct road safety behaviour. Spring is about to commence and we hope your mode of travel to school changes too! Keep active and stay healthy everyone! Our next Ride2school morning will be Thursday 17th September 2015. Thank you Young Leaders/Junior School Councillors and Maria Phokos

Primary Schools’ Parliamentary Convention The Primary Schools' Parliamentary Convention is held in the real Legislative Assembly chamber of the Victorian Parliament House! It is designed for senior primary students (Grades 5&6) who are interested in talking about important issues for their schools, their community, their country and their world. The Convention is a way in which Grade 5 and 6 primary school students can actively experience and practise democracy. Students come from many different schools throughout Victoria. Students debate and vote on key issues about which they are passionate. By using the formality of parliament, students develop skills such as persuasive and public speaking, confidence and a greater understanding of Australian citizenship. Three cheers and congratulations to our two students Sadman and Evangeline who have been accepted to participate in the convention. On behalf of the Young leaders, Junior School Councillors and Leadership team at Reservoir we wish them both the very best.

This event is to be held on FRIDAY 11 September 2015.

SCIENCE DAY – STORIES FROM GROUP 5

On Wednesday it was Science Day and I stayed in the prep classes more and the Grade 1 and 2 classes less. First I went to Mrs Gregorc and made a balloon blow up without blowing it up with my mouth! Then I ran over to Miss Montile’s class. She is my favourite Prep teacher and we did Bubble Science! Tasleen

“Boom”, the volcano was beginning to explode. Then we went to Group 8. We were looking at worms with the magnifying glass. Finally we were doing a brainstorm and then we went to Group 1. I was sounding words. We needed a water bottle, powder and a balloon. We needed the balloon first. We needed to the balloon to put the powder in the balloon. It was fun. Kerim
