This year we will be celebrating Literacy and Book Week in the week beginning Monday 8th August. Throughout the week children will be reading several of the books nominated for the Australian Children’s Book of the Year awards. The highpoint of our celebration will be Friday 12th August. On this day children are being asked to come dressed as something from the THRASS chart. We will be holding a THRASS Parade in the stadium at 9:30am, this will be followed by two multi-aged literacy based rotations, where children will visit two different classrooms and experience two different picture story books and fun activities linked to the books. After recess the fun continues with a very special book week performance Fair Dinkum. Celebrating the Children’s Book Council’s 2016 theme ‘Australia: Story Country’, Fair Dinkum is an action packed, fun filled adventure that encourages children of all ages to consider how significant books can be, not only as a means of entertainment and escape, but as a way of informing their understanding of the world around us. The performance features a selection of the CBC’s 2016 Shortlisted Books. Erin Norman Literacy Coordinator HEALTH ALERT

Parents & Friends Update

Where is Nolene?

In recent months some families have noticed Noelene’s (crossing supervisor) lengthy absence from Kalinda Road and been wondering what has happened to her. In case you didn’t know, Nolene took long service leave with

plans to retire and move closer to her grandchildren. So although we didn’t have a chance to officially thank her, we do wish her well.

If you have used the crossing on Kalinda Road lately, you can’t help but have noticed (and probably spoken to)

Malcolm, who is our current crossing supervisor. P&F caught up with Malcolm this week.

P&F. How long have you been a crossing supervisor? Malcolm. About four months now.

P&F. Do you have to do any special training to be a crossing supervisor?

Malcolm. Yes, there is an all-day course you need to complete.

P&F. What do you like about being a crossing supervisor? Malcolm. As I’m now retired I enjoy the contact with people.

This is a lovely school with lovely families and kids.

P&F. How do you manage to stay so cheerful, even when you’re standing out in the wind and the rain? Malcolm. I’m a pretty happy type of person. Nothing really gets me down, except my team losing!

P&F. Which team do you support?

Malcolm. Essendon

P&F. Do you have any advice for the children at Kalinda Primary School? Malcolm. Listen to your parents and just be polite to people.

P&F. Will you be stationed here at Kalinda permanently?

Malcolm. Unfortunately the council can send me anywhere. I’m here for the next two weeks and after that, who knows. If they asked me I would love to stay here permanently.

Malcolm has two grandchildren at Kalinda. Please say hi next time you are using the crossing.

National Asthma Week 1-7 September The theme for National Asthma Week 2016 is Become a Better Breather. National Asthma Week coincides with the beginning of spring and as pollens are a known trigger for asthma, this is an excellent time to ensure your child’s asthma is well controlled. Sections of the Asthma Australia website that can help with asthma management include:

Take the Asthma Control Test to see if you could make improvements to help your child become a better breather.

Manage allergies often linked with asthma, including allergic rhinitis (hayfever).

Did you know? 90% of people with asthma use their medications incorrectly.

Check your child’s technique to see if they are getting full benefit from their medication.

Regular review of your child’s asthma with your GP and pharmacist will help them to become a better breather. Need help with your child’s asthma? Contact our Asthma Assist line on 1800 ASTHMA (1800 278 462) and talk to one of our friendly Asthma Health Professionals.
