WHAT WE’RE LOVING NOW …

Marie (Techie)I love design technology! Discovering, learning and perfecting various pro-grams, apps and websites is driving my business forward. The ability to pro-duce high quality content for my blog reinforces my expertise snd directing all

social media marketing back to my blog educates poten-tial clients and keeps my business top of mind. Clients are “wowed” by the design renderings I create on the computer. Millennials communicate, buy and decorate using technol-ogy—it’s the future of our industry.

Kate (Master Planner)I love when a plan comes together. Some of my favorite projects involve taking design aspects that my clients already have such as a favorite piece of furniture or ac-cessory and implement-ing them into an updated

room design. By taking this approach, the room keeps that personal feel while transforming into something new and fresh.

Nancy (Wonder Walls)I am loving all of the fresh new wallpapers that are emerging! Wallpaper is back and is bigger than ever. Now available in so many great new textures and patterns, all you have to do is pick up a wallpaper book and get ready to be inspired!

York carries a line of recycled glass bead and sand wallpaper that is glamorous and innovative. Embellishments such as beading, embroidery and Swarovski crystals make the new wallpaper available more inspiring than ever.

Grace (Turkish Delight)I’ve been research-ing all things related to Turkey over the past few months in preparation for my trip to Instanbul for R+T Turkey. I can’t wait to explore the Old City—the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar and

more. I’m planning to take a few days away from Istan-bul to visit Ephesus and then spend a night or two in cave hotel in Cappadocia. I’ll tell you all about it in Las Vegas!

t seems odd to be writing my pre-show editorial in the last ‘holiday’ issue of the year, but it’s a good thing. In 2014, we’re mix-

ing up the traditional industry trade show schedule and moving IWCE: Vision ’14 to February 4-6 in Las Vegas! Personally I think it’s great tim-ing for a trade show and conference. The holidays will be over, a new year begun and what better time to freshen up your product offerings and brush up on new techniques and skills. By the time you get this issue, I hope you’ve made your reservations to join us in Las Vegas for inspiration and motivation, plus a lot of fun!

If you still haven’t registered, please do not wait until the last minute! Due to our co-location with KBIS and the International Builder’s Show, our en-trance fees will be steeper than in the past, however your badge will get you into three fabulous events all under one roof.

Explore all three shows to discover in-novative ways to build and grow your business. Kitchen and baths continue

to be the most popular rooms to re-model and each have special needs when it comes to window treatments. And International Builders’ Show will provide amazing insight into the com-ponents, fixtures and styles consumers will expect in a thoroughly up-to-date home. You’ll see not just the technolo-gy that’s changing our homes, but how the way we use our homes is changing their design. There’s no denying the growing role technology plays in our businesses and to offer assistance with this we have added a new feature at IWCE: Vi-sion ’14—Design Tech Summit, which will feature programs, providers and cutting-edge ideas from some of the leading companies in the business. It’s one more thing to add to your ‘must see’ list at the show, along with Con-struction Zone, the always-popular Design Competition Awards and the hundreds of new products and tech-nologies featured on the show floor. As part of our info-filled seminar schedule, we’re offering a taste of our three certification programs at the

show: WFCP Design, Workroom and, for the first time this year, Color Cer-tification. Be sure to check out how to increase your business with these programs. We’ve always believed in providing quality education and we’re very excited about the ongoing ad-ditions to our programs, all of which which will be offered online through-out the year. A final reminder to make your plans and register before the holidays this year. (Don't forget: the show is Febru-ary 4-6!) Wishing all of you a happy and healthy holiday season! V

Carla Ballman on Curtain Cloth City

I’m Officially Obsessed With

On a recent trip to Beijing my travel companions and I stumbled

across the Lianfa Curtain Cloth City, otherwise known as the curtain

maker’s market. It was a curtain maker’s Nirvana: Row after row of

shops dedicated to the art of making window treatments as well as

selling fabrics, trims and hardware. ¶ At first glance, the alleyways

of the market appear in disarray with rolls of fabric and boxes over-

flowing with fabric scraps and trims littering the walkways. I was in

sensory overload—my eyes filled with the gorgeous hues, textures

and designs of the dramatic window treatments. Many of the window

treatments started with a simple soft cornice, but became works of

art with the addition of swags, cascades, trims, grommets, cording,

and crystal buttons. ¶ The shops specializing in trims were long

and narrow, but packed floor to ceiling with unique and beautiful

selections ranging from

simple brush fringes to

crystal beaded and tas-

seled trims. It was in one

such shop that I discov-

ered Swarovski-style but-

tons in a rainbow of colors

and a multitude of sizes. I

was able to convey to the

shop owner that I wanted

to purchase said buttons, so with the help of a calculator and a lot of pointing and miming, we were able to agree

on a price for a few hundred buttons in different colors, styles and sizes that I can use on future projects. ¶ I would

have purchased some of the beautiful trims as well, but could not decide, and at this point my travel companions

were ready to head back to the hotel for a much needed glass of wine and some dim sum! I’m definitely returning to

Beijing and when I do, I’m bringing along an extra bag just for my foray into Lianfa Curtain Cloth City.V

t’s time to be honest with your-self—do you lose jobs after you meet with a client because your competition undersells you? If

you believe that’s the reason you don’t close certain jobs, here’s a little chal-lenge for you: Call them and find out!

If you get the facts, you’ll find there are a lot of reasons homeowners didn’t buy from you. They may have just delayed their planned purchase; possibly they found a friend that sells window treatments; maybe they saw something new that caught their fancy. But only if you call them and find the facts can you make good decisions for your business

Call back every customer that does not buy from you, and you are likely to find some interesting facts. Assuming your closing ratio is about 70%, then about half of these non-sales, or 10-15% of your total appointments, did not buy from anyone. The other 10-15% may have bought from a competitor., but probably not the competitor you think.

Take ActionThe biggest concern for independent window treatment designers is that chain and franchised competitors are taking over 25% of all custom window treatment sales in North America. They are doing it with increased Web presence, improved SEO— the new style with more content, not just key words —and through online ads and

New era marketing necessities

Facing up to the Competition

pay per click. Marketing has become expensive, but, you need to market to get appointments. Marketing is where your competition really hurts you—be-cause you’re not losing sales after the appointment, you’re losing business because you never get the appoint-ments at all!

Now, I know some of you will claim you sell 90% of your appointments. But, there are two reasons that’s actually a bad indicator.

1) It means you don’t have enough appointments. Rarely does someone with two or more appointments a week close 90%.

2) Your pricing is too low. If everyone is buying from you, you’re not charging enough—raise your prices.

So, stop worrying about competi-tion after you have an appointment. Instead, take immediate action. The first step is to raise your pricing. Start with a 5% increase. After 90 days, I can guarantee you will find your closing rate does not change. So raise your prices another 5%. I have never seen a customer who will pay you $2,000 who won’t pay you $2,100, just 5% more. That’s extra income you can use to increase your marketing budget.

Success in the New EraIf you have enough business, if you make all the income you need, if you

have that magic lifestyle balance of family and clients, you don’t have to do a thing. Just count your blessings for being in the greatest business in the world!

On the other hand, if you seriously want more business, it is time to think different. There will always be room for the custom designer to have a fol-lowing, but, even that requires good, consistent marketing to keep custom-ers coming back.

If you want to grow in the new era of increased Internet competition, drop me a note. I am glad to help anytime. I enjoy seeing business owners prosper in this wonderful business.

You can compete…and win. Take up the challenge and show the world what you can do! V

recent discussion with my design clients highlighted a dilemma that many designers face. If we’re

not getting referrals from networking, what’s going wrong? Our discussion led to many insightful comments, which I’d like to share with you, so you can leverage your most precious com-modity—your time.

And if you’ll be joining us for IWCE: Vision ’14 in Las Vegas in February, then you’ll want to use the advice in this column to turn every conversa-tion into a potential opportunity.

Start With the Right Mindset It’s important to remember that when networking, there are many possible outcomes of your conversations, all of which can be extremely beneficial. You could: • Learn about a new resource, supplier, net-

working group, learning opportunity, etc.• Discover solutions to client challenges• Get great advice• Meet people to form a Mastermind

group• Meet a mentor• Meet a potential design partner (think

architects, builders, specialty design-ers, realtors, property managers, etc.)

• Meet a potential client• Meet a potential referral partner• Meet someone who can solve a

problem of yours, design-related or otherwise

• Make a friend

So you see, if you begin with the right mindset, you’ll dramatically increase

Building referrals through connectivity

Are You the Wrong Way?

your chances of walking away with invaluable opportunities.

Following are some strategies to help make the most of your networking time, build stronger connections and increase your chances of receiving referrals. And building your business by referrals is how you achieve busi-ness nirvana.

Build Rapport First Approach people in networking events like you’d approach a potential friend, and connect on that level first. Easy icebreakers include compli-menting them, asking how they know the host, what brought them to the event, have they been to that venue before, etc.

Look For Ways to HelpMost people look for opportunities to talk about themselves or their work. Instead, look for ways you can help the person you’re talking with. Can you connect them with someone? Can you or someone you know use their services? Do you know of a group they would like? Think outside of work, too.

Make it Easy to Give You a ReferralThis is important. You must be able to succinctly describe not only what you do and your Unique Value, but describe your Ideal Client and project(s) to them. Give the person enough information to decide on the spot whether they know someone who might be a good fit for you. If you make it too vague and try to appeal to everyone, you’ll appeal to no one and

get no referrals. Instead, be specific, and ask for a referral.

Let Them Know How Helping You Helps Them People are busy, so you need to give them a reason why helping you is worth their time. Put yourself in their shoes and think in terms of benefits to them, you’ll be sure to come up with motivating ideas. Can it make them look good? Can it make their job easier, more efficient, more profitable or give them more exposure?

If you do these things, you’ll not only make more meaningful connections, but you’ll give people exactly what they need to hear to refer the right clients to you. V

T

e’re about to debut our latest Interior Design Fee & Salary Survey on January

14, 2014, and in past surveys, we’ve found that one of the biggest areas of conflict with clients is over fees.

Your fees are related to your value as a designer, and yet, your clients don’t value paying for your services—they value the representation of those services in the form of a beautiful interior with furnishings, accessories and window treatments that captures their unique vision.

A Little Knowledge is a Dangerous ThingConsumers often think they can create the same results themselves, based on the experiences they see on ‘reality TV,’ but that’s just information without the expertise to back it up.

It is your job to educate your clients about what they don’t know. You also need to keep educating them when they become your client. How often do you need to inform them? How ever many times it takes to get the point across!

Addressing a Sensitive TopicFees are highly charged subject mat-ter, especially for residential jobs. Your clients worked hard for that money, and they are making decisions not to invest in other things in order to improve their interiors.

Make your services tangible

Preventing With Clients

What are they giving up? They might postpone a trip, or keep their car for another year or two. Few clients, in-cluding the affluent ones, are shelling out tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars without serious consideration about the benefit of that expenditure. So now you can see why they get so upset when they get large bills that are for the ‘intangible’ services that you provide. Making Your Services ‘Worth it’To win clients who are weighing the costs of design vs. other potential expenditures, you must make your intangible service tangible. For ex-ample, Debbie Green with Dandelion Interiors and Minutes Matter Solu-tions, creates a 3-D image of the space and sends it to her client. They get invested in the project because now they can see what they will get upon completion. Editor’s note: If you don’t know how to create a 3-D rendering, Minutes Matter offers training, or there is a network of Minutes Matter specialists who can do renderings for you.

You should also think about alterna-tive ways to price your services. You can do a value-based fee, fee per room, and many other iterations of fees to help your clients understand what a project will cost in advance.

Every single client does their home-work today, and there is no such thing as a blank checkbook. But they almost

always have in mind an investment they are willing to make in their home.

Many times they will exceed the original budget if they see the value for their lifestyle, so be sure to relate your services to the results they will get, and the problems they won’t have to pay for if they choose the wrong things for their home like an out-of-scale sofa, or window treat-ments that don’t provide the correct light control, etc. An effective floor-plan combined with correctly speci-fied products save clients time and money. The right products can save thousands of dollars You just may need to repeat the message, again and again and again… V

hoosing color for a client’s home redesign may be one of your favorite activities, but for many homeowners

it is an extremely difficult part of the process. As a designer, your knowledge and expertise in a few basic principals of color will make the selection process fun and fruitful, rather than frustrat-ing, for your client.

The first steps matter

Helping Clients WithSelection

Uncover Your Client’s Style Successful designers know the impor-tance of learning their client's color and style inclinations before choosing a palette for their home. Learning to hone in on style is easier when you ask specific questions about each room’s intended use and how they would like to feel in their new space. Many times the client will reveal more

about their desires for a space when they are comfortably talking about how their family will use it.

Know Their SpaceNow it’s time to assess the overall space. Before you even begin to make a recommendation, it is imperative that you really examine the spaces you will be working with.

Here are five tips for really getting to know each room in your client’s home:

1. Size it up: Does this space seem too small or too large for how your client plans to use it? As you make choices, think about how color and furniture placement will visually expand or shrink the space allowing you to ac-complish your overall theme.

2. Focus on details: Doors, windows, molding and floors all need to be considered. Include all archi-tectural details in the floor plan and also take a close look at their color. Wood isn’t simply brown and carpet is never just beige. Examine these items closely to note under-tones of color.

3. Purge and pick: Walk around the room and talk to your client about what pieces they absolutely adore, what they need to live with for now, and what they plan to replace. You will want their new design to dis-play the things that are important

by Kate Smith, CfYH, CMG

Color combinations do more than bring visual appeal to a room. Colors elicit emotions, which is why it is important to consider how your client wants the room to feel before you recommend a color palette. When you keep the mood in mind, you will be able to select colors with greater confidence, knowing they are setting the right tone for the space.

Page 23: WFV Nov/Dec 2013

WF-VISION.COM | NOV/DEC 13 | 21

to them while still balancing those items they will have to live with until they are able to replace them.

4. Watch the light: Study the way light naturally enters the home. Examine the room for dark areas and note where they will need to add appropriate lighting and what types of lighting you suggest for the space.

5. Set the mood: Whether you are trying to create a room that is calm and restful or warm and welcoming, color is the single most important element used in a living space to evoke emotions. Set aside function for the moment and focus on how your client wants this space to feel.

Educate Them About Color As a designer, you may be better than your client at visualizing how col-ors mingle with one another. This is where it can be helpful to show them

a combination of colors already work-ing together. Using fabric samples is a great tool that will allow your client to see how a combination of colors will come together. It is much easier for your client to make sense of how to bring colors together when they can visualize the colors in a scheme.

In the next issue I’ll cover how to pres-ent a color scheme to get client buy-in and facilitate final selections. V

t’s a relatively rare thing—that a successful independent busi-ness can transform itself to service a completely different

market, leaving the old market behind, and become even more successful. But that’s exactly the company his-tory of Orion Ornamental Iron, which started as a gate and fence business in 1983 and today is one of the window treatment industry’s leading suppliers of all types of drapery hardware.

The company took its first foray into drapery hardware in 1992, but re-mained a regional supplier of primar-ily custom-order hardware until 2002, when the current owners, Atul and Sunil Patel purchased the business. “Our objective was to grow the col-lections offered by the company,” said Atul, “and to create a leading brand which would be synonymous to high end custom drapery hardware, quality manufacturing, exquisite finishing and excellent customer service.”

Changing Industry LandscapeIn just little more than a decade, the Patel’s have witnessed tremendous change in the industry. “In 2002, there were a number of regional custom manufacturers of drapery hardware,” said Sunil. ‘The window covering industry was booming, but post-2008, with the underlying changes in the home mortgage industry, we saw the market size shrinking, companies not able to support manufacturing in the US, and a general decline in market share and revenues.”

But instead of hunkering down, Orion Ornamental enhanced its national presence by increasing its marketing budgets and expanding its product

Three decades of design innovation

The New Age line. The company also offered its clients an ongoing gift by main-taining prices, despite the inevitable increase in production costs. Atul and Sunil are proud to continue 30+ years of manufacturing in the U.S. and consider the domestic produc-tion key to the compa-ny’s ongoing success.

Hardware Design TrendsWhen the Patel’s first took over, the company’s top selling products were drapery hardware sets in iron. Over the next five years, popular collections included the one-way draw systems, bamboo-look hardware, metal cornices and a more contemporary collection.

Iron drapery hardware remains a strong com-ponent of the company’s business, but in 2008, the Patel’s purchased KBlair Finials, which added high-end wood and crystal collections

The forging and ironmon-ger roots of Orion have never been set aside, as custom orders are still a significant aspect of the business. This is true for the other drapery hard-ware lines the company offers as well. Wood poles and finials are hand-fin-ished in its facility located in North Hollywood, CA.

to their offerings. Today, the crystal collections are a key part of Orion’s line, including the relatively new Bohemia Crystal products, the designs for which were developed in-house.

“The success of a new product sometimes has to do with meeting a small niche, and at times creating revenue growth,” explained Atul. “In both scenarios we consider a product line successful when it meets designer expectations.”

Asked to describe other re-cent product introductions, he mentioned Designers’ Choice and the Somfy Traversing hardware in metal. “These were some of my favorites to develop due to the complex-ity in design, component sourcing and the unique look we were able to achieve. The Somfy hardware proved very popular and we have since offered the traversing track with Somfy Motorization.” He attributes the success to the design features and customization, including bent tracks, the company was able to offer.

One of the newer lines is the 3D Drap-ery Hardware collection, which won a WCMA award for most innovative overall concept in 2012. The company will be bringing new introductions to this award-winning collection to IWCE: Vision’14 in Las Vegas. “We feel the 3D Drapery Hardware line defines func-tionality and design at its best and we believe it will be the forerunner of our growth in 2014,” said Atul.

Since shortly after the Patel’s pur-chased Orion, the company has consistently won awards for its products—and has featured new and soon-to-be-released products in its booth at the IWCE shows. When asked what else attendees can look forward to in Las Vegas from this forward-looking company, Atul mentioned that Design Art by Orion line, which was previewed in New Orleans, is ready for its full-scale launch. Given the company his-tory, it’s sure to be another winner. VThere is no doubt that Orion Ornamental Iron, Inc. has

been on a winning streak. The Bohemia Collection of crys-tal finials (top) was a WCMA award-winner in 2011, as was the Tuscany Traversing system. The 3D Drapery Hardware line (center) was a 2012 winner, while in 2013 the company won for its Design Art finial adapter system and for the Somfy motorized curved rod with rings (not shown). For 2014 the company will be introducing new traversing rod designs (bottom image) as well as the Design Art by Orion collection, a new line of wood finials, rods and poles with unique hand-finished details. lackout window treatments have a long

history in the bedroom, migrating from hotels to homes over the past 15 years. But with new ad-vancements in textiles and coatings, blackout options have become more sophisticated and stylish than ever before and as such, are making their way into the rest of the home.

Jennifer Donnelly, marketing manager with Wilson Fabrics, the Australian company that just recently set up shop in the U.S., believes that it’s not only just improved tex-tile technology that is making blackout a more popular choice than ever before.

“Consumers are becom-ing more aware of the energy savings that can be achieved by using blockout fabrics, they are becoming increas-ingly used throughout the whole house,” she

said. “These fabrics not only blockout the light, but they also reduce the heat transfer into the house in summer and out of the house in winter.

But she readily admits that improved manufacturing techniques have helped Wilson’s blockout fabrics sky-rocket in popularity over the past few years. “We developed a proprietary foam coating with flocking which is softer and more luxurious to handle than the traditional acrylic coating,” she explained. “In addition, our Pitch Black™ blockout coating surpasses standards for the tough Australian sunlight and we are able to offer an exclusive collection of coordinating blockout drapery and blind fabrics.”

The company developed these collec-tions to allows a complete coordinated mix and match story throughout the home. “This is particularly benefi-cial considering the current housing trend of open plan living. With our coordinating ranges, you can keep a consistent look and color scheme throughout the home while having a mix of curtains and blinds, said Don-nelly. “For example, if you prefer the softer look of drapery in the living area and the clean lines of a blind in the kitchen, you can have the same textured design and color in a mix of both treatments throughout the home.” V

Wilson offers dual rollers (top) with both translucent and blockout blinds with a single control and headrail. The company’s coordinated collections (bottom) ensures curtains and shades will match across various rooms and installations.

indows have changed dramatically over the past 40 years, from the ‘standard’ 36" x

54" rectangle to a seemingly infinite variety of shapes and sizes. As windows become larger and the shapes more complex, the challenge of shading them effectively becomes ever greater.

Blindtek Designer Systems, owned by Lee Miller and Steven Bemand, has been developing custom solutions to unique windows in the Northeast market for over four decades, selling to both wholesale and retail clientele. “Forty years ago our business was pri-marily spring roller shades, venetian and vertical blinds” said Miller. Twenty years ago it was pleated, cellular, woven woods, and wood blinds. But now, with ever-larger expanses of glass, uniquely shaped skylights and a desire for natural light, it’s all about energy efficient UV-blocking LEED fabrics combined with motorization.”

Miller, who had actually sold Blindtek in 1993, got it back in 1996. In 2010 he incorporated Specialized Shading Systems, Inc. to help distinguish be-tween the wholesale and end-user aspects of the industry. “Specialized Shading Systems, Inc. was born out of a desire

The benefits of specialization

The of Thingsto Come

to service our wholesale customers better and focus on the faster-growing part of our overall business,” explained Steven Barnes, Vice President of Busi-ness Development for Specialized Shading Systems.

The Purpose of Specialized“The company always had a reputa-tion for taking on jobs nobody else wanted, said Barnes. “In 2003 we engi-

neered three skylight Roman shades for the Montclair Art Museum; they were 20' wide by 30' long and weighed in at a hefty 1,000 pounds each and were 30' AFF (above finished floor)”.

Miller adds, “Architects love to design art museums as large, open areas filled with lots of natural light. The issue with is that UV rays damage the art and therefore the art needs to be protected

from the sun. The window cov-erings have to do this job and cannot fail to operate.”

“The massive museum shades were designed for a large atrium glass sky frame over a public space that had to overcome many engineering obstacles,” explained Lee, “but what was unusual ten years ago is becom-ing commonplace now.”

Barnes and Miller go on to list several recent projects that would drive most fabricators into fits:• 20' x 15' roller shade that

required a 5 1/2' tube to avoid deflection issues

• 12' x 9' bottom-up blackout shade with no visible lift cords

• A Fifth Avenue residential project where all the open-ings were set up with three motors per window, and are operated by motion sensors.

Bottom-up solar screen triangles on roof and drop down roller shades on conservatory doors, using Satine in a twill weave, one of Mermet’s Intelligent fabrics.

Page 41: WFV Nov/Dec 2013

• An exterior shading project in upper Manhattan consisting of many trian-gular shades and two massive shades that had to traverse over a hip ridge to cover two elevations of glass.

• A conservatory full of triangular bottom-up shades using a woven wood material the company had custom woven in China.

The Specialized MindsetMiller has a saying that everyone at Specialized Shading Systems is famil-iar with: “They landed a man on the moon. We can make a shade for that window.”

Barnes explains, “The ‘man on the moon’ quote is what I like to call a ‘Lee-ism’, sometimes our industry gets stuck inside the box. They forget to be truly creative when it comes to window coverings simply because manufacturers are so focused on be-ing mass marketers. To send a man to the moon took people to think outside the box and believe they could do it, as long as it doesn’t violate the laws of nature or physics.”

“At times, making ‘Specialized’ window coverings requires us to think outside the box and find solutions to problems using parts or ideas from other ancil-lary industries.”

When asked for some examples, Barnes mentioned the sailing indus-try, explaining that durability, sun-and weather-resistance, lightweight strength and other key aspects of designing for sailboats easily translate over to specialty shading designs.

Working with complex window situations has given the team at Specialized Shading Systems unique insight into how to best manage such projects, especially now that motorization is such a key aspect of nearly every installation.

“Because motorization requires inte-gration not only with the electrician and the AV technician, but also with

the millwork vendor, we really like to get involved in a project right from its incep-tion,” said Barnes. “It’s best if we can work with architects to plan specific construction details.”

“After 42 years in this industry, we have developed a reputa-tion for being able to handle all specialty needs,” said Miller. “We are even recom-mended by our competi-tion when it becomes evident that something falls outside of standard offerings is required. This includes unusual shapes, bottom-up, skylight, exterior ap-plications, extra-wide or extra-tall shades that exceeds aspect ratio limitations, stain-less steel awnings and even Europe-an-style outdoor living spaces.”This detailed knowledge experience guarantees that Specialized Shad-ing Systems is able to engineer their products to be service-free for many years. If a service issue arises, regard-less of whom or what created it, a rapid response team of techs headed by Paul Berliner comes to the rescue.

“Architects are our best clients,” said Miller, “because they recognize the intellectual property that we offer is invaluable to bring functionality to their most challenging designs.” But Miller goes on to say that the company

has worked with nearly every type of player in the building trade.

“Better general contractors like to recommend us for the jobs they are awarded, because while the motor-ized shades represent only 5% of their construction budget, if not laid out properly and coordinated between the various subcontractors, it can repre-sent 50% of the overall problems. Our expertise helps eliminate that source of stress. We even get calls on jobs from AV specialists and electricians who are awarded projects but need us to consult or make something special for them.” V

CONSTRUCTION ZONE FEB. 4-6, 2014 BOOTH #460Year after year the Construction Zone continues to be a bustling hub for sharing, learning and inspiring, as top workroom experts share their techniques, their passions and their talents. This year will be no exception, yet will offer a few extra bonuses. The Construction Zone coordinator, Terri Booser, has some variations planned for both the demonstration format and the vignette displays to shake it up a bit! She comments, “This year’s Construction Zone will be set up with two interactive classroom style areas where attendees will have the opportunity to sit, learn, and construct many small projects relative to the demonstrations taught by the WFCP™ instructors and/or members. There will be something to take away from each demonstration. And as for the vignettes, they are being constructed by the WFCP™ instructors to highlight concepts and principles included in the WFCP™ workroom certification program with “Drapery and Fabrication Art” as a theme. They are sure to be innovative, inspiring and as always, over the top!”

Construction Zone is sponsored by WFCP and coordinated by Terri Booser, WFCP Expert and Workroom Certification Senior Advisor and owner of Studio of Drapery and Fabrication Arts, a workroom and private training facility.

One of any designers’ favorite moments is

the unveiling…when a formerly plain space

becomes something wonderful, a transfor-

mation made possible through their skill in

wielding color, texture and pattern. V

Nancy Charbonneau, WFCP, Allied ASID Woodlands Fabrics & Interiors, Houston, TX

Nancy Charbonneau’s client wanted to transform their un-decorated bedroom into one that reflected their love of glam-our. Their existing leather bed was reupholstered in a creamy velvet, then tufted with crystal buttons. The faux painting on the wall is a metallic bronze with beaded star medallions for extra sparkle. The bedding fabrics are a mix of luxurious textures with sequined trims and fur providing even more of a wow factor.

A kingston valance in velvet with a tapered bead trim and crown medallion accents adds to overall impression of elegance. A flokati rug brings softness underfoot, and an elegant settee adorned with a leopard chenille fabric cushion and a bead trimmed skirt rounds out the room.

Kate Kimmich, WFCP, Outside the Box Designs, Wexford, PA

A Pittsburgh, PA, client of Kate Kimmich asked that a second floor space be transformed into a guest suite for her grown children’s visiting friends. “We knew each other through my chil-dren’s school,” explained Kimmich. “She had seen my home and other client projects, and said she loved my company’s approach of quality over quantity and form follows function.”

Before hiring Kimmich, the client had purchased bedding, pillows and bathroom shower curtain and towels from Crate and Barrel. “My client loved the bedding and accessories but was stuck with how to pull the rest of the space together,” said Kimmich.

New woven shades, with blackout lining, were installed to coordinate with the color tone of the furniture. The valance adds a finishing touch, while a continuous cord lift guaran-tees the shades are easy to raise and lower. “The shades completed the monochromatic color scheme of the room but added a texture that enhanced the space,” said Kimmich.

The sitting room was designed to complement the guest bed-room. A new floor plan helped the space work and feel better. The pedestal lounge chair was swapped for Eames-style design, while the long ‘slouch’ sofa was replaced by a neater and slightly smaller Parsons-style sofa bed. A more uni-fied paint scheme works with both the new Crate and Barrel purchases in the bed- and bathrooms while integrating the sitting room. The lightweight ottomans work as a coffee table or extra seating while remaining easy to move out of the way when it’s time for the sofa bed to be pulled out.

“The client loves the custom Roman shades,” said Kim-mich. The embroidery on the shades picks up the color on the walls. Unlike the bedroom shades, these are only lightly lined to allow diffused light into the sitting room.

As a final touch, Kimmich recovered the vintage Scandana-vian rocker in the bedroom and a side chair in the sitting room to better coordinate with the new color scheme. Once the project was complete, the client told Kimmich: “You understood the vision I had in my mind but was unable to communicate. You more than transformed the rooms…you updated and rejuvenated the critical elements of the rooms to make them look fresh! I would love to stay in my own guest room. It is such a calm soothing space. I love it!”

Marie Mouradian, WFCP Expert, Window Designs, Etc., Jefferson, MA

Marie Mouradian was thrilled when a long-time client, who had decorated every other room in her home, finally gave the go-ahead to do the master bedroom. Mouradian took the WFCP Studio Advanced Coaching session in January of this year and used the bedroom as one of the projects. “I presented alternates to the client using renderings completed in Studio, which allowed her to easily visualize the options,” said Mouradian. “It made the decision process much easier!”

The completed room was installed in September 2013. The client had opted to keep the existing (15+ years) Duettes but on the day of the installation agreed that they needed to be replaced. “A few more things are needed to complete the room,” said Mouradian. “The client is hoping to pick up linens for the nightstands in an upcoming trip to Italy. Taller lamps and an area rug at the chair end of the room will also be shopped for, but I suspect we’ll end up doing a custom rug.”

Recharge Your Creative Batteries

The overall theme for the

Maison&Objet September

edition trend forecast was

“Energies”, based on the con-

cept that there is no reason

for ‘energy savings’ when it

comes to creativity. Instead,

the forecasters recognize

that it often takes an enor-

mous amount of energy to

convince clients of the opti-

mal decisions, instead of just

the most expedient! Here’s

the statement the trend board

released to capture the fall/

winter theme: “Driving forc-

es are being harnessed to

anticipate the upheaval of

the changes in progress and

stimulate the dynamic of

high-voltage desire. Positive

waves and optimism genera-

tors are electrifying the status

quo. This constructive move-

ment is liberating the imagi-

nation, reviving unexpected

aesthetics and drawing on

alternative currents.” Are you

FUNT@SY BY VINCENT GRÉGOIRE: “Style scorns the dogma of sobriety. A playful waywardness makes life more fun. Irreverent mash-ups, offbeat reinterpretations, provocative collages and crazy combinations of allusions to neo-classical culture and digital pop culture. Chic and shocking, the modern dandy of iconoclastic bling knows no limits. The result is sure to be entertaining, featuring humor, parody and caprice.” Shown left: a Studio Job design for Moooi that takes the German folk art of furniture painting in a completely contemporary direction. Shown right: Part of the ‘Life Given a Shape’ collection by Deviazione, which reworks traditional decorative ceramics techniques in surprising manners.

ILLUMINATIONS BY ELIZABETH LERICHE: “An era plunged into obscurity seeks sources of illumination. Between radiance and incandescence, a compelling yet troubling sensory experience is lighting up both spaces and spirits. Light and shade catch the eye and modify perception. Hi-tech magic – nebular, dream-like or hypnotic – electrifies the sense of awe. The new century of Lights is generating dizziness, throbbing and intense vibrations.” Shown above: Lamp Ripple by Hanshi Chen Poetic Lab.

PSYCHOTROPIA BY FRANÇOIS BERNARD: “With a seething intellect, creativity explores invisible force fields, combining the spiritual and the strange. A psychedelic dreamscape steps beyond reality and leads us towards other dimensions. Fol-lowing the random wanderings of the mind, a psychotropic poetry revives the mystery of the hidden and the sacred. References to Surreal-ism, Esotericism and Outsider Art serve as an initiation in the Shamanic magic of parallel worlds” Shown left: A Formafantasma textile design that combines a ladies face from a Pompeii mural with Surrealist fan overlay. Shown below left: Designed by Fernando and Humberto Campaña for Edra, this bed fea-tures hairy-looking curtains of raffia that can be tied back with magnetic leather holdbacks.
